Hi All,
Yes! It's here. I set it up in about 5 mins. And I thought my first post should be here on MacRumors.
Initital impressions,
I spent 10 mins just staring at the box. Then when I opened it, I spent another 10 mins staring at the computer. It is absolutely beautiful. Form following function. I was griping about the 'old' form factor but this really is ideal. I'm not sure how they could change it without losing some of the elegance.
The 'cool' things so far. I am stoked with the trackpad. It's so much fun to scroll using 2 fingers. The built in i-sight is way cool too. When I was starting up, it gave me the option of taking a picture of myself and using it as a log in account. I thought that was a neat touch.
Physical problems - everything looks ok. I have a minor gripe though. On the right side, the top of the laptop doesn't meet the bottom. There is about a 2 mm gap between the top and the bottom. I guess it's not a big deal, but I noticed it, and will probably keep noticing it. I'm a symetry freak.
Heat - my 12" Rev A G4 was hot. I have this siting on my lap and it is definitely hot. Not uncomfortable yet, but definitely hot. And it started heatin gup within 5 minutes of placing it on my lap. My plan is to keep it here until I start calibrating the battery - about 3 hours - lets see if it becomes unbearable.
I haven't checked for thr whine yet or done the extended hardware test. That's next. Waiting for the battery to charge up completely first.
I will keep posting here as a running commentary. If you are expecting one soon and want to ask me questions .. go ahead. As I said, I opened it 10 mins ago and am going through a step by step troubshooting check.
eV
BTW, it was love at first sight. I was wondering if I had done the right thing by spending 3500 on a machine. The second you open the box, all buyers remorse goes out the window. :) It is truly truly beautiful.

conga-rats!
I just received my shipping email - i have a tracking number with TNT, but unfortunately there tracking details for my consignment are just "Not found" so i have no idea where its come from, or where it is!
Anyway, yeah, a commentry of checks to run (e.g. how to run this hardware check) would be most appreciated, hopefully save me time muddling about trying to understand everything (as a mac newbie!).
Hope the relationship is going well ;)

Hello,
Congratulations on the MacBook Pro!
I think you would have noticed the whine problem if you had it, i'm sure i read it's pretty noticeable. So, it might be safe to say you don't have it!
Keep us up to date with your findings, and enjoy !!!

I'm in LOVE. :) :)
I had a MAC before but this is like falling in love all over again. The latest discovery is how damn easy it is to set up. I spent 2 mins setting up my .mac account with my activation key. And it AUTOMATICALLY sets up OSX mail to read and download emails from .mac. Same with finder and idisk. All automatically set up.
The integration of hardware and software is absolutely superb. Windows may have won the business war, but as soon as people see what OSX can do, and more important, what it does NOT do, you'll see people switching to macs.
Believe it or not, the heat has actually GONE down. Now I don't know if its because I am getting used to it, but my perception, for what it's worth, is that it heated up for the first 10 mins, and then went down to 'normal.
I know for sure it hasn't got warmer. I've been running it on my lap for close to 30 mins now.
I'm doing something 'silly. I'm using OSX the old way. WIthout expose and dashboard. Once I realise how much fun it is to use a mac again (my last OS was jaguar), then I'm going to start playing with the tiger features and see how much easier it has gotten.
The only apps I have used thus far is Safari. (sorry, will check DVD later but that isnt a priority right now). It is mindbogglingly fast. I mean, no lag, it just zooms. Pretty damn cool.
The keyboard is great. The handrest part is bigger than my old 12" G4. WHich makes it easier to type, since you can rest your wrists on the palm rest. Very comfortable and much easier than my old machine where your hands would hang off the edge ...
Keep posting questions if you have any. I will keep answering.
Im keeping my fingers crossed on the whine and the hardware test. But I won't be able to get to those until the battery is completely charged up so that I can unplug it.
So far, it us super quiet. Can hear the fans running but that is normal I guess. Although the fans have been running non stop as far as I can tell. Again, I'm not sure if they are supposed to go off though.
No dead pixels at all. The screen tilt angle problem has been over emphasised. It's perfectly fine. I am using it sitting on my lap. I lifted up my knees to angle the machine, and tilted the screen back, it works fine.
eV
(.mac might be expensive but man, it is cooler than hell to have a xxx@mac.com address. :) :) ) Mine wasn't taken so I got the exact one I wanted.

Rich.
I thought you only hear it when the battery is on Rich? Right now its running off the power supply. Anyway, if this is the 'whine' it isn't noticable at all. Lets see what happens when I unplug it.
Oh - MAGSAFE, its 'minor' I guess, but pretty damn cool. The cord gets drawn in and makes a slight snick when it engages. :) And there's a tiny dot on the connector that glows green or red. Very subtle.
I don't know what it is . It's not one thing, but a combination of things that make a MAC such a good user experience. I'm in heaven right now, and this isn't even my first MAC. It's a very cool, very sexy machine. And, maybe I'm in denial, but even if they do change the form factor in a few months, I'm ok with the one I have. It really is perfect. We talk about all these things in the forum but , once you hold the machine, you fall in love. And the design is very very elegant. ROlex and Porsche haven't changed their basic form factor in 30 years, but, they make slight improvements that keep it fresh. That's the way I feel about this MBP.

Course you can, F8 i believe, or adjust the timeout settings for it in system preferences.
eVolcre, can you hear any buzzing from the right hand side when you adjust the screen brightness? my MBP has just gone back to apple for the second time to have this fixed.
Congrats tho, love mine too!

excellent, i tried to fade it out using the dim light button (as you would do for the screen), but it would only go to one dot left, and so wouldn't turn off.

well, ****, maybe i spoke to soon. my ENTER key just popped off. I was typing and It came out of the socket. I *think* I can just snap it into place. Not a big deal for me, but if Joe Blow out there buys a 3500 machine and the key pops off, he's going to be PISSED. Anyway, how do I snap it back?

i think you can just pop it back, and it'll click right back in. its difficult to explain, but there are usually male and female parts on the key and the key holder, bush one into the other and your done.
Thats got to be dissapointing though!

You're hitting F9.
F8 automatically turns the keyboard backlight off without dimming it first. F9 dims it, and F10 brightens it.

i see the male and female parts but theres some kind of a 'bar' there too. hmm. lets see if i can try again. how wierd though does this happen a lot with new laptops? do these keys come loose in transit?

thanks, watching DVD's in the dark had become a bizarre experience! Bring on the movies that don't have a lit keyboard behinf them!
As for the OP, I'm not by my 'puter right now so i'll shy away from giving any other advice, anyone else know how to get the key's back on?

I know that the keys can come off and on, but not on their own. the enter key must never have been seated properly.

Whew, It's back on. Not sure what I did but it kinda just snapped back into place. I forgive her. New relatiopnships sometimes have a rocky start :p
Although, as I said, a new Apple switcher who just dropped 3k on a machine would NOT be happy.
OK, back to having fun and telling you guys all about it.
So, this post has a few things in it. Expose and the screen.
Expose - holy camolee. It is SO convenient and within 5 mins I can't see how I ever used a computer without it. It's bloody brilliant. I have the hot corners set up and I don't see a simpler way to swicth between apps. One swoop of the keypad to the right and BOOM all windows show up. I haven't used the 'same application' one yet. And don't see why I would. All my browsers are usually in tabs. Maybe multiple word docs? But the screen is big enough that I could place two next to each other. I was playing with the desktop picture and 'show desktop' was amazing. I mean, no minimising a hundred windows, just one swoop and BOOM there's the desktop.
The screen .. WHEW. I'm coming off a Rev A 12" so maybe I'm overawed but this damn thing is amazing. I had the brightness on at halfway (didnt know what it was set opn) and thought it was fabulous. Then, I checked the settings, turned it up all the way and man .. unbelievable.
The screen real estate is great too. Again, I'm coming off a 12" machine so I could be biased, but it just seems huge. Almost ... too big, believe it or now. Im glad I went for this machine as opposed to the 17". With expose and this screen resolution / size, it is the perfect lend of portability and real estate.
Heat, it's been sitting on my lap for 90 mins now. The bottom is not noticeably warmer than before. All the reposrts of burning legs, balls or hands are ridiculous. The area above the speakers is warmer than the rest, but i dont plan on keeping my jands there. The palmrest is fine. Cool in fact and much much cooler than my old PB. The area above the F keys are the warmest of all but it's not so warm that i have to yank my fingers away in a second or they would burn. I had my finger there for 30 seconds and while it was warm, it wasn't uncompfrtable.
So far, I can live with any 'issues' I am seeing, because I don't even notice any issues. Great machine. Next up, within 90 mins, whine test and extended hardware test.
WOuld you all like me to do or check anything else?

how did you get the new lines in with no enter key....

I remember from using old laptops with missing keys that you can push the thing that the key itself pushes, its just quite awkward thats all

It's the new input device, didn't you hear? You stare at the isight, wink left eye, right eye, left left right and it gives you a new line.
Actually, the key popped off but that is just an interface into the actual key. So I looked into the gap and pressed THAT button.
OK, one mroe cool thing, the remote. It's really cute. I haven't used it yet but it's nice and tiny. Only thing about that though, is that its white. So it seems like it is an iMac accessory that was added to the MBP as an afterthought. It's white and black though which makes me thing the iBook might be offered in black or white. Would match perfectly.

It simply enables windows on the mac, a very useful notion for many (e.g. at my uni - they rather like 'doze so it makes life easier there)

Nope, sorry pal, I draw the line there. No MSFT OS will have the honour of gracing my beatuiful new baby.
And, bella, if you took the time to read the rest of this thread, you would realise that only the first few paragraphs were about the opening. I have a great idea, instead of adding yet another post, which has been done before, complaining about my post, you have the option of not clicking on the thread title. I sugest you execrize that option.
OK, so, right now I'm playing with dashboard. It's pretty cool. The ripple effect when you add a widget has to be seen to be appreciated. I'm coming from Jaguar straight to Tiger, so that may explain some of the fascination.
The other thing worth commenting on is the screen size. It is HUGE. If I didn't know better, I would have thought this was a 17" MBP. It seems to be thinner and wider than the old PB. I can't see needing any more real estate with this size, resolution and expose.
In fact, if I wasn't going to be travelling so much, I could have got away with a smaller screen. But, since I'm on the road pretty much all the time, the screen will be great for DVDs.
I am using it on my lap exclusively so check for heat and tilt angle Both are fine right now. I have had it running for 2 hours and 30 minutes and can see nothing that concerns me. The heat, for me, is a non issue. Yeah, it's hot. But it's a frigging computer. It's supposed to get hot. Next up is the whine test and the hardware check.
Oh, another quick tidbit. I put it to sleep for about 5 minutes. The second it came back on I put it back on my lap and it was absolutely cool. Like it hadn't been running at all. So, if anyone is burning their testicles with the heat  put it to sleep for 5 mins. It literally wakes up absolutely cold.

Dude, hold on man. That's next. I'm waiting for the battery to charge up completely and then have 3 or 4 hours at a stretch so I can charge it down for caliberation purposes. Probably get to it tonight when I get home from school.

If you could do the following test:
1) Listen to your computer closely as you scroll in your browser, navigate finder... etc.
2) Now, open the application "PhotoBooth".
3) Do the same things you did in step #1.
If you don't hear a difference at all, you're in luck !
I had to install "MagicNoiseKiller" and load it on boot in order for my whine to go away anytime I wanted to use the computer. Super annoying.
Also... I wish you could feel my MBP. It's f#$%# HOT. I could actually, physically, BURN myself on it if I left it touching the underside of my arm for too long.
Mine is the 2.16 model, with 2 gigs of RAM however.
Anyway, glad you are in love ! I love mine too... but it's already getting a new motherboard :(

Precisely why they use aluminium. Glad someone has pointed out all you have to do is sleep it for 5.
My PowerBook is ICE cold when it's sleeping, when i turn it back on then it gets warm, because the heat is being dissipated through the aluminium. That's how it should be.
I don't think many people know this.

Dylan, I'm in class right now, but will run more tests as soon as I get home. I have the same set up as you btw. Now, the whining thing, it DOES need to run on battery power right? Because when it was plugged in, I had my ear all the way to the left side and all I could hear was a whirring - soft - assumed it was fans. But, will do your test tonight. And I HOPE I got a goodone.
Ok - some not so good news on the heat. Before I left home my last test was to put the machine through its paces. Multiple safari windows, one live stream of video, some mp3 and a few chat windows. It performed great. Expose is fantastic.
Heat wise, the bottom got hot. Pretty hot. I had my hand on it and I definitely had to take it away after 15 seconds or so. It would be uncomfortable on bare legs. Now, I had it on my lap the whole time and through my running trackpants I felt nothing. But, I definitely woldnt be lounging around in my boxers with this sucker on my lap.
The top, however, was completely fine. This is the good news. The palmrest area wasn't even warm to the touch. (this is at the same time the bottom was hot ). The area above the speakers was slightly warmer and the area above the F keys was the warmest in the top area. But again, on the top, it wasnt painful or even uncomfortable. I wasn't yamking my fingers away.
Just as a reference, when i touched the bottom i didn't have to yank my hand away like, " Oh $hi+, thats frigging hot". It was more of a , hmm ,, its defintiely hot and after 30 seconds could get uncomfortable. But it was NOT like putting your hand in an open flame or anything which is the impression some people are giving.
The screen, again, is marvellous. Absolutely beautiful. Bright, crisp. By far the best laptop screen I have used. The extra space is great (compared to my 12") and expose is - to beat a dead horse - fantastic. In a mere 3 hours it has hanged the way I do my computing.
And it's FAST. I haven't even done anything processor intensive. So this is just a impression - no benchmarks or anythig like that - it feels snappy. Windows, icons, apps open fast. and internet browsing is amazingly fast.
Maybe I got lucky, maybe the new revs have fixed issues (mine is a 14 serial number). I will keep putting it through its paces and keep y'all posted. If mine is in fact working properly and you can tell that your machine is different compared to my subjective comments, then maybe there is something wrong with yours.
So, tonight.
1. Hardware check
2. Whine check when its on batteries with no applications open.
3. The tests Dylan asked me to run.
Hope this is helping you guys. If it isn't, I can stop posting. But I thought a 'real user' experience might help as opposed to benchmarks and random heat comments. I'm giving you my opinion as a normal user, putting it through things I plan on doing everyday. Until now, no deal breakers. Including heat. Its a very powerful machine adn I expect it to be warm.
Oh - last thing - the perecived size of the machine. I KNOW it's a 15" screen, but if you look at it from a few feet away it really looks like a 17" powerbook. Its slightly slimmer and wider than the old PB but the perception is that it's a hige machine. Which is OK, because the weight and the actual size (carrying size I mean) is that of the smaller PB. We get the best of both worlds with this size ...

I found that out by accident and then tried it again and it worked. It went from piping hot, the post above where I was talking about the bottom, to absolutely cold. In literally 5 mins. Then it took an hour of high intensive work to get hot again. 5 mins every hour is a decent break I think. Its a natural smoke break for me. :)

Keep on posting, since then i can quickly run through the checks you do when mine arrives (again, can you give a brief outline of how to do the hardware test - i have no clue how to, and it would save me searching other threads!) Also, i don't spose theirs any "you must do this" etc things in the manual that could result in damage to the mbp if they are not done?

Hehehe. 20 points. To explain a little further, we're not in a writing contest here. My point is to give you info as fast as I can without being caught by the professor. LOL. So, I type as fast as I can and in 'conversation' mode.
OK Robert, Here's what kkapoor told me about the hardware test.
1. Insert the CD labeled Apple Recovery Disk 1. It's in the nicely packaged little box.
2. Power down the MBP.
3. Power it back up WHILE HOLDING the letter D down. This brings up the H/W test.
When I do it tonight, I'll post what actually happens while going through the process.
As far as initial setup I really didn't have to do much. Plugged it in and powered it up. (this was after just staring at it and holding it for 10 mins). That did serve a purpose though, I was checking for physical defects and the only one I found was that the right side top was about 1 mm short of touching the rubber pad on the bottom. I think I can live with that.
Anyway, once you do this, a little setup box appears that walks you through the rest of it. I also set up my .mac accoutn at the same time. I didn't have any files to transfer over but it asks you if you want to do that.
In about 5 mins it was up and running. Even found airport automatically. Quite intuitive.
Something cool. When I set up my .mac accoutn on startup, it automatically set up OSX mail to be linke to .mac. I thought that was great.
as far as transferring files over, someone in the other thread said to wait on doing that. He said to play with the machine for a few days, see if you can break it and then reinstall OSX. This lets you check if the recovery discs are okay and also lets you fix any problems you may have created while playing around.

I look forward to seeing the results of the sound test while on battery. My T43 thinkpad used to make that horrible high pitched sound when plugged into the network and it would drive me nuts. I would never want another laptop that did that! I'm very happy with my Dell at the moment, but for the future it would be good to know the MBPs are getting some problems ironed out ;-)

Im in love with my mbp pro too. Its not a BEAST like yours (look at my sig for mine) but it is great. The whine has been off today all day..i wonder why. Anyhow when it does come on..I open up the app comic life, then close it and the whine is gone. Glad your enjoying it man! BTW, wait till you start encoding songs with itunes..( only took me 33 minutes to encode 141 songs from mp3 to aac, while using safari and adium...  )

OK, I'm SURE this has been covered somewhere, but what is the reason the sound comes on only when on battery. (NOTE" I'm not saying mine whines, I havent checked yet, ) but why would it be quiet when plugged in and make noises when the battery was being used?

I might lift up the other end so that even though both sides are messed up, it's symetrical. LOL
As far as profs, we have a brand new building for the MBA program. Wireless throughout. Stadium seating, the works. So we're kinda expected to be typing or looking down. The problem arises when these bastiches start cold calling. (this prof is famous for it). And if you're typing a mile a minute like I am when I post, and he's asking questions, he's probably wondering what exactly you're typing. LOL. Oh well, 2 weeks to go, what's he going to do? Dock me to a B? Big deal, I have a job allready. :p
Back on topic!
AJMUNI, TO be really honest, I think my machine might be overkill. But, even if its overkill right now, in about a year or so it will be 'normal' compared to the rest. I think. So, instead of buying something now and saving 500 bucks or more and then kicking myself in a year, I decided to go all out and get the best. And once I decided to go with the 2.0 model, my thought [process was, well, may as well spend 300 more and get the next one up. One thing led to another and I ended up maxing it out even though I really have no clue what a 7200 rpm drive does as compared to a 5400. They're both fast ... :)

I spent 10 mins just staring at the box. Then when I opened it, I spent another 10 mins staring at the computer. It is absolutely beautiful. Form following function. I was griping about the 'old' form factor but this really is ideal. I'm not sure how they could change it without losing some of the elegance.
that's basically what i did when i got my 12" Powerbook G4 in august 2004... i was SO excited... i bought it at an apple store here in oregon and the whole time i was going home, i was starring at the box. then when i got home, i spent about 10 minutes just starring at it and marveling at how small and light it is. :) :) :) :) :)

If you could do the following test:
1) Listen to your computer closely as you scroll in your browser, navigate finder... etc.
2) Now, open the application "PhotoBooth".

I had a rev D (serial starting with W8613) with the whine issue. Some people have reported sending their machines for repair and coming back silent. Not sure why this would be the case as they try to fix the inverter issue and not the processor whine (as it is deemed "normal" by Apple).

Not too sure, but some guy went ahead and took out the little piece of code that ensures the whine goes away, and packaged it in a small little app called MagicNoiseKiller.
To solve the whine, here is what I did:
1) Install this: http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/downloads/MagicNoiseKiller.zip
2) Goto "Preferences -> Accounts", choose your account, click on Login Items (or something like that), then add MagicNoiseKiller.
Tada ! Now everytime you login, you won't hear the noise.

Got mine yesterday as well. I worked a 12 hour shift last night. I do mainly sys admin suff and it was a really slow night so I pretty much spent the whole night playing with it. First to answer a few of the normal questions. There is no whine whatsoever on my machine and had it doing just about everything on battery and off. I have no problems with the screen at all or the tilt it all works wonderfully. As saif above it does get warm but no more than I expected. The hardest part for me was just learning whats what (this is my first Mac). Halfway through the night I installed XP via bootcamp. Everything worked like a charm. My only complaint is when you first install there is no suppoed for the eject Key on the keyboard so I had to go in to the Computer management console and tell it to eject the media so I could put the driver disc in. After I installed the drivers the eject key worked as did everything else. That little quirk did'nt bother really esp since this is the beta for it. All in all I love this machine and I really like OSX alot I think they are succeding in turning me and it did'nt take to much. Its funny I usually feel bad after spending so much money but I like this so much I don't feel bad at all. Tonight I'm expecting another slow night so I plan on doing a little Lan gaming with fellow workers. I'll check back in tomorrow morning after work to let you know how it went but for now I need to get some sleep.

I dont s'pose the change in sound is to do with any sound from the iSight? (I know my friends RevA iSight doesnt make a noise, but...just a thought?)

Robert, I'm not sure what it is. The 'whine' is only on battery power. WHen plugged in it sounds fine. And, it's only from the right side not the left. As I said, I doubt I would even notice it BUT when I run photobooth, something definitely quiets down. So, maybe that means it does have an issue. I'm going to keep running it and putting it through the paces and will keep this thread updated. So far, it's a fantastic machine. Very very fast. Boot up from full shutdown took about 40 seconds. Fun reading, glad to see someone really likes his new Mac.
I really don't think the whine is anything important. My rev A. 1.25 15" had the whine for a few months, but as time went on either I got used to it (which I doubt) or it became much more quiet.
Most of the noise was from the heat pipe settling in IMO. And the 'buzz' harmonics seemed to change when i added the 1gb Ram chip. Today, the loudest thing is the new drive and the fans when I run pro apps. The MBP is a different beast I know, but I still think its mostly 'fanboyism' taken a little to far.
Oh, and the best case for the hard life of student living (again IMO) is from Tom Bihn. I love mine because I never have to think about it. It just works.

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to freak out about it. The only concern I have is that if this is the 'display inverter whine', that might cause problems. What exactly is a display inverter anyway? The other thing is that it seems to happen only when the power cord is unplugged. Realistically speaking, I will probably always have it plugged in. I can't think of too many situations where I will need to be running only on battery.

OK, another finding and maybe someone could help me understand this. The whine or the buzz happens only when the screen is idle. ie not doing anything at all. Even if I click on another window, while it is switching over the whine stops and as soon as the other window is active, it starts again. Even if I scroll, the whine goes away. Does this make sense? Maybe thats why the photobooth fix works, the screen is being updated.
Like right now, the screen is not doing anything, being refreshsed etc while I type so the buzz is there. To test it, I clicked on another window and while the screen was being refreshed, the whine stopped.
Does this mean anything to anyone?

The inverter noise comes from the top right hand side of the laptop where the screen meets the keyboard portion of the machine. It sounds like a crackling sound.
The processor whine comes from the left hand side and emits a high pitched sound.
There are two distinct noises caused by two distinct issues.

I actually have no idea what it is doing, but I remember reading from the guy who wrote it that he went into the source of PhotoBooth, or some other app, found the code that was making the sound go away, then just repackaged it.
I guess the code just starts a tiny little process that kicks the noise out.
I've read from A LOT of people who don't even know they have the whine noise until they actually get rid of it, then they're like "OMG... it's a lot quieter now".
Crazy. Apple hasn't said anything about it as far as I know. Apple needs to step it up ! It's like they release a product with a bunch of flaws, and not admit to any of them, as they don't want to deal with the returns / fixes.

Try another app, I think quiet macbookpro is the name. It has this little slider bar that you can set from 0 to 1000 and you can hear the whine fade in and out. Definitely shows the problem more clearly I think. You're supposed to move it as far away from 0 as possible without having the noise kick in. I could only get mine to 70 or so, but I have freakishly good hearing. (i.e. I can hear a tv on in another room even if there's no sound playing - whine of the tube).
Slide it from 0 to 1000 and back and you really notice it.
Mine's in the shop right now. I just got the call with "we couldn't duplicate the 'whirring' noise". I said it's WHINING not WHIRRING you stupid ****s. (minus the stupid ****s part, as at this point i'm still maintaining composure).
Apparently my shop is only an Apple retailer and not a store. Even though they market themselves and present themselves as an APPLE STORE. God I hate KU. I'm going to rip them a new one if they make me mail it to apple for a week and a half to get repaired. I didn't drop 3 grand on a new laptop to send it in for repairs on the 4th friggin day I own it. Absolutely not.
I also have this bizarre audio glitch where an audible click is played each time an audio file is initiated. Be it the 'woop' noise from changing volume, or an itunes file. All the same. I'm going to stab the snobby little farker at the shop if this isn't resolved.

Agreed! Apple needs to be better about this. I was about to buy a 15" PowerBook HD back in December but the screen issue kept me from doing it. I believe it is true. The noise is associated with the processor running at a lower speed to conserver the battery. So I believe the noise killer just ensures the processor runs at a higher speed that eliminates the sound.

Ok, so I finally got my MBP (and probably the first one in the UAE too). Had a friend of mine order it for me from the US and bring it with him on his way here. Ordered the 1.67GHz stock model early Feb and was delighted when I found out it was being upgraded to 1.83GHz. Ordered 1 GB of Ram from Cruical, ScreenSavrZ from Radtech, and the Mighty Mouse as well.
So far, I had spend the first couple of days just looking at the thing, admiring it. Once i got a hold of the power adapter, and philips (00) screwdriver, i upgraded the RAM, and charged it for a couple of hours before powering her up. I'm so inlove with the whole experience (hardware/software) I could have sworn I had multiple orga$ms (& still am experiencing them as I type this).
Took me a bit of time to get my wireless DSL setup up (using the Siemens SpeedStream 6520 provided by my ISP), finally figured it out myself a few hours back. Its my first Mac, and as a 'switcher' (Yes! I made the switch. w00t!), would like to know what apps you recommend are 'must haves' and what can i do to optimize the performance of my mac (installing or getting rid of any applications already on my machine). After having updated the firmware, I could've sworn the startup(boot) time is even faster now.
Am quite obsessed with looking after my MBP and would like to know what sleeve/case would you'all recommend I get. I was kinda leaning towards the Shinza ZeroShock (http://shinza.com/product_info.php?products_id=57&osCsid=1d4d9994aa093fe1e098c2d39e28994e). What do you think?

This is the part that has me confused. The CPU whine being fixed by magic killer makes sense. But, I didn't HAVE the CPU whine. I had the display buzz. But even that has now gone away.
And Dylan, you were right. Once I installed it and it went quiet, I realised how noisy it was.
kkapoor, since I have the display buzz, you said earlier that it was due to a faulty display inverter. Now that it has gone away do I still need to get it fixed? Was the buzz caused by something being broken or was it merely an annoyance?
On a diferent note, my keyboard just lit up. WOAH. Talk about cool!

Have there been any reported issues with MBPs failing to wake up from sleep easily? Does the noise killer effect this at all? I had to manually remove the battery to do a 'cold reset' to wake the thing up frmo sleep.
Anyway, I'm putting it through its paces right now and hopefully if there's something wrong, Apple will replace the machine for me. It's a sweet computer thouigh. One of the best I have owned. It's a damn shame that it has these niggles.
Dyna, You were right btw. You don't realise how annoying the whine is until you actually silence it.

I had 2 kernel panics in a row. I was trying to install a widget and thought that maybe it was faulty. Anyway, I shut the lid to make it go to sleep. And then the fun began, it just wouldn't come on for about 30 mins. I tried everything. Took the battery out, tried taking out the power cord and starting up from battery only. Abs nothing seemed to work. The machine wasn't dead, the white sleep light was ON and I could hear the fans. But the display just wouldn't come on. It would make the sound that it makes when coming out of sleep and thats it.
I have no idea why but after about 30 mins of trying it came on. More fun to follow. As soon as I logged in, there was the GREY error box saying I needed to restart. You know what that meant. Again, it wouldn't come on. So about 10 mins later it comes on, I log in, and there's the grey box again. (I assume thats the box that shows up when you have a kernel panic?) So , after 2 such restarts and umpteen 'i just won't come on', it finally worked and here I am posting in this thread.
Anyone know what may be causing this? WHat do I tell Apple when I call. And will they replace it or fix it?
I'm a total Apple lover and I did make the choice to buy a Rev A, but this really is unacceptable when you spend $3000 on a machine.
Anyway, I'm going to try the extended hardware test now. If I don't post in this thread it means the damn machine didn't come on again. :( :(
Here's the log file from one of the panics

This is bizarre. The extended hardware test said everything was ok. But, even before I got to it, I got a kernel panic WHILE SHUTTING down the computer. This is the log file. Any ideas guys? All of a sudden I'm getting buyers remorse and the 3k I spent is making my stomach clench up. Maybe I should have bought a refurbed G4 with Tiger and iLife 06 to tide me over for a year and then buy a new macbook. Man!

That sucks man :( I think it is crazy that people are spending $2,000 - $3,000 and are getting faulty computers. I have been saying this for a year now, Apple need to step up quality control. The MacBook Pro has SOOOOO much potential but the problems are chasing people away. I'm not using an Apple right now becuase there is nothing I feel comfortable enough using. I would give Apple a call and demand a refund or an exchance. I would probably go with a refund and avoid the MBP for awhile until more of these problems get ironed out. Best of luck!

I wonder why it suddenly started playing up? Had you installed anything other than the silencer?

I'm assuming you have not added 3rd party ram or anything? Did Apple install any memory for you? You might try removing a memory module to see if that helps if there is more than 512 in there.

For the issue of the screen closing. Almost every single PB and MBP's displays dont close at the same distance from the bottom on each side. Its nothing to worry about, but the apple rep i spoke with said that it has to be 4-6 mm or so to be concidered for repair and/or replacement.
-dsm
ps mine is warped about 2 mm on the right side (compared to 3 mm on my last pb)

Here's an update with all that I've done and what worked and what didn't.
If you don't want to read all of it, the current status is that it is up and running. Updating the firmware did nothing to take away the whine from the right side. I'm not sure at the moment if it is serious enough to warrantee a replacement. Magic Noise Killer works great and takes away every little noise that the machine makes.
I spoke to Applecare this morning and we documented the issues. The wake from sleep problem is related to the kernel panics. If you had a panic while sleeping it has issues with waking up. All the kernel panics were software related - or so the support guy says. The one thing that irritates me is that they still claim that the frigging whine and crackling from the right side is normal. Anyway, all the issues are documented and I did all the changes needed. I will be putting this through the paces and if I get another kernel panic, back it goes, because at that time we would have exhausted all software fixes.
The gist of what I have done so far.
I don't remember all of the process becaue we were on the phone for close to 2 hours. But ..
1. He reset the pram or something. Basically had me hold down C, B, R and a few other buttons while restartign the machine.
2. Did the extended hardware check with no errors.
3. Went into disk utility and checked the disk - no errors.
4. I had updated the firmware on kkapoors advice but it didn't take the sounds away.
5. He had me update the OSX to the latest version from software update.
6. After doing all of this, he said that if it happens again, I should do a clean install.
7. Instead of waiting, I went ahead and did an erase and install of the OS.
So, as of right now I'm running 10.4.5 with the latest firmware. Noise issues are still there, but are silenced with the magic noise killer. The fact that it CAN be silenced leads me to believe that it isn't a serious hardware issue and that Apple should be releasing a supoprted update soon.
I haven't upgraded to 10.4.6 because I read that the update brings back the noise and the noise killer doesn't work.
I think that's about it for now. As I said, I think I have done all the recomended maintenance at this time. Everything is up to date. If something goes wrong now, it isn't because of software. For now, I think I can live with the whine. It really isn't THAT noticeable anyway. I'm more scared of sending it back and getting a machine that's even more FUBAR'ed.
Chrispy,
I agree with you. After spending this kind of money, we should have a peaceful install instead of reading up forums and trying to make sure nothing is wrong. I don't think, at this point, the machine is DOA. But, we will see.
Oh, I do have extra RAM up to 2 gigs. but it was installed by APPLE.
Any questions? Any other tests you all want me to run?

Glad to hear you're up and running again, after the panic.
Just hope that there are no more kernel panic's i hope!
Also, sounds like you had a good experience with support, unlike some of the ohter stories going around!
Anyway, can't think of anything else atm, just, can you let me know if you think it runs hotter with magic noise killer running all the time now, and if so, is it considerable?
Thanks and good luck :)

This heat thing is so subjective Robert, that I'm not sure how to compare it. It doesn't *seem* hotter than before while running the noise killer all the time. But, I didn't think it was TOO hot even before. Is the bottom hot? Sure. But, even the manual says that the bottom is how the laptop is cooled.
On the top of the machine, the hottest area is the area above the function keys, then the area above the speaker grills and finally the palm rest.
The palm rest area is barely warm. Seriously. It is almost totally cold so I have no discomfort while typing. I don't plan on touching the area about the Fn keys too much so who cares if it gets hot. And while the bottom IS hot, it has been sitting on my lap for close to 2 hours now and I'm not on fire. I'm wearing pretty thin khakis.
As long as the heat doesn't affect the working of the computer, I think it is totally acceptable for such a powerful machine. So far, all is well. As I said before its a fantastic computer. Probably the best one I have owned. I was worried last night and this morning with the kernel panics etc but all the error messages indicated that it was software caused and not hardware. I've run the extended hardware test multiple times and all seems well.
Yes, I have the 'whine' or the crackle or whatever the heck it is called these days but a) it wasn't annoying before and b) the noise killer kills it COMPLETELY.
I'm back to being happy again. :D :D :D
I have 10 more days to return if needed. And as I said, after performing all the software maintenance, if it crashes again or has a kernel panic, it's going back to Cupertino. The important thing is that I could have fixed it by following kkapoors advice. He said the same thing as the support folk. But I wanted to call them and have the issue noted in my file and have them walk me through a fix. This way, it's on the record, and if things keep getting worse I can show them a string of complaints and issues and make a case for a replacement.

Its never been there. :D Unless you took it there on vacation.

So why isn't a bit of hum and crackle? What, really isn't acceptable about a dual core 2Ghz laptop making a few noises as it does its thing?
Just a wonder of mine.
Don't take me dead seriously. I'm just feeling a bit goofy tonight. Hope all stays well with your "public beta" Mac Book Pro.

An update for those of you who were following the story and especially for all of those who helped me figure things out.
It is running incredibly well *touch wood*. The firmware update seems to have taken care of any heat 'issues'. Again, I didn't have them before but I'm running the temperature widget and things are stable. It stays steady at about 42 C which is supposed to be an acceptable temperature for a CPU. The key, though, is that even if it gets a mite too warm, putting it to sleep for as little as 5 mins brings the temp right down to 21C.
I have the noise killer installed and it runs dead silent.
Some things I absolutely love so far ...
1. Expose and Dashboard. It's completely changed the way I compute in 2 days.
2. The looks. I still catch myself just looking at the form factor. I'm sure they can come up with something newer and cooler but this current one is the epitome of elegance. I used the Porsche example earlier and stand by it .. some things are just timeless.
3. The screen - it is UNBELIEVABLE. I was so distracted getting things to work for the first few days that I couldn't really enjoy the machine. But man guys, the screen is something to behold. I've seen nothing like it.
4. The keyboard is fantastic. I actually find it a little bit more comfortable than my old 12" G4 because the palm rest portion is bigger which means I can rest my palms on them instead of having them hang off in mid air.
5. OOOH factors - the first time the backlight came on automatically I went nuts. :) Too cool. Now, just for fun, I turn the lights on and off to see it work.
6. Automatic brightness. The screen is actually a little TOO bright at times. If I'm in public I will probably keep it at maximum brightness to show off but when I'm alone, I like the fact that it dims and brightens automatically. It is really un intrusive and easy on the eyes.
7. The form factor - again - I don't know if it's the proportions but if you look at it it really looks like a 17" laptop. I mean, I KNOW it's a 15" but it looks like it's bigger. Very well proportioned though.
That's all for now. If you have any specific questions or tests you want me to do, feel free to ask.

edited to add - trackpad. it is awesome. Nice big size and the two finger scrolling is really useful. I usually don't like trackpads and actually bought a mini mouse but this one is so easy ot use that I haven't even set up the Radtech mouse yet.

From the post above, sounds like everything was fine by you. Why did you return it? Processor whine? If so, did they explicitly state the replacement had the processor whine fixed?

Nope. No whine. I was okay with it. No heat, I was ok with that too.
It was a really frigging wierd issue. Sometimes it would go to sleep and just not wake up. If you power it down all the way the light would go off in the front. But when you hit power to bring it back up, you would hear the drive whirring and the fans come on and that's it. Nothing else.
KNow what's bizarre? If you sit there and hit on and off about 50 times it finally DOES come back on and works just fine. I don't get it.
The first time it happened (Friday) support thought it was a software issue. Did all sorts of things. Checked disc, updated firmware, reset PRAM, even did a clean install. So it worked. All dandy. And then last night I put it to sleep, wake up this morning, tried to wake up the MBP and no dice .. ****ing thing did the same old problem and didn't wake up.
Anyway, I am typing on it as we speak. Everything is fine. I love the machine. No buyers remorse but I'm a little dissapointed with Apple. NOT because there are issues, but because they claim there are no issues. But. That's a different thread .. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=194988 That one!
Oh - to make it even more confusing, the extended hardware check comes up perfectly fine. If you can troubleshoot this, give it a shot because it makes no sense to me.

heres my two cents about the noise killer app:
yes it works and thats great! But IMO thats why you buy an Apple computer: it should just work with out any problems. Yes, its not that hard to download noise killer, but you shouldn't have to with an Apple computer. They're supposed to "just work", not "just work, but only after you install an excellent piece of free ware off the web to get your goddamn machine to shut up:( ". Thats sounds a lot like something you have to do with a PeeCee. For me, this is one of the main reasons I buy Macs. This is really disappointing to hear that Apple hasn't at least put a patch out.
Just my two cents

Am quite obsessed with looking after my MBP and would like to know what sleeve/case would you'all recommend I get. I was kinda leaning towards the Shinza ZeroShock (http://shinza.com/product_info.php?products_id=57&osCsid=1d4d9994aa093fe1e098c2d39e28994e). What do you think?
Thanks..
The ZeroShock is a GREAT little sleeve. I have one for my 12" PB and I just put my PB in the sleeve, zip it up (fits like a glove - doesn't hang loose like a neoprene sleeve) and throw it in my backpack. It's kind of hard, but if you apply pressure to it, it gives in....kind of like those memory foam mattresses only a little denser. It's sturdy but it has some give when it needs it (like if you drop it).

For those who were following this story ... Apple agreed to issue a refund for my 15" MBP and ordered me a 17" instead. I know there's still a chance the 17" ones will have issues, but I didn't want any buyers remorse. The new machine is actually cheaper than the MBP I am replacing.
Plus, the 17" has a certain cool factor that the smaller one doesn't. :)

It's definitely got some *bling* factor to it. I posted this in the other thread as well but what I was thinking was that if this latest MBP has FW 800, that should mean it's a different motherboard, right? I wonder if that would fix all the issues the older machines were having ...

I just got my new MBP 2.0 Ghz 2x512 7.200 rpm.. i've geen charging it last 30 min and it gets pretty hot @ the [TAB] key area and above the left speaker... i've unhooked it for 15 minutes now from MagSafe and it seems it's cooling down.. since this is my 1st mac, i dont know how "hot" is normal..
How is the MBP cooled? fan? sinkpipes?
adios

i would be surprised if this one has any problems. i would think they bumped back the release/ship dates to make sure there werent problems like with the 15"

lol, i would be surprised if the computer gives you any trouble. but if it does, i'm sure apple wont give you any trouble. i understand that you want it to be perfect out of the box. my money is on no problems with the 17" mbp. no whine, no heat poblems, no anything.

Nah, the 17" is to big for what i do... and i've bought a 23" ACD aswell.. so i dont have to do it for the bigger display..
Only a bit lame it gets pretty hot when it's charging while i'm working on it..

yea i guess if you have an acd, then the mbp's screen size doesnt really matter. is the heat uncomfortable, or just noticable?

Does the battery fit snugly against the chassis with no gap on the MBP? My G4 PB had that problem. The Apple Store gave me a new battery, but I still have a little bit of a problem. At least I scored a fresh battery out of it!

How hot are we talking? Like snatching your fingers away hot? Bottom, palmrest, above the F keys or above the speakers? The heat question is a little subjective but if you describe it better maybe one of us could chime in on whether it sounds 'normal' or not ...

I'm slightly confused about the whine issue.
Now, I'm plugged in, and sure enough i can hear a whine.
I thought it didnt happen when you were plugged in. It is coming from the left of the machine, it goes when isight is on, or when i switch the machine to Single CPU. So, I'm pretty much guessing this is the whine people are talking about.
But, I thought this only occured on battery power?
Another question, to do with charging - i can only reach 99% charged. Should the status go up to 100%? When i click the battery in the menu bar, then it says 'battery charged'....but percentage whise its not 100%...
