View Full Version : Sending my MBP for repair (first time)

I've never sent anything for repair. How long does the process usually take? I just received the box to ship out today.
Do you guys think they will fix the CPU whine issue? Heat issue (I don't see how this can be resolved?) Also, some of the keys are not aligned. I hope they will take care of all of this...

they should be able to take care of all the issues you told them about when you called it in. i sent my mbp in on tuesday and it's apparently already repaired and on its way back to me. yay!

Apple offered to fix mine to, but they said it might be out for more than a week and I can't afford that now. But if they can fix everything then I might have to find some time where I can live without it :) Keep us updated!

Wow, I just called DHL for a pickup like 5 minutes ago and the guy came already to pick it up. I Hope they take care of all the issues. I didn't backup my hard drive because I don't have an external firewire hd which I should now invest in.
Spiffy... I'll let you guys know if they fixed the issues

Yes you really should. You didnt have an ipod or something? I called them yesturday to report the whine issue which for some strange reason it isnt whining today AT ALL ...and she told me she would send me a box via DHL. I backed everything up on my ipod. Im assuming theyre aware of the whining issue and have a solution for it. I asked the support tech If i can just get a new one, and she said no they were going to repair it. I liked that idea better than getting a new 1 because they can fix the whine. Imagine getting a new 1 and it has the same whining issues!
p.s. they told me 7-10 business days to get it back.

Nothing you can do now, but Apple explicity asks you to back up the data. Should have stated so on the sheet that came in the DHL box. Oh well, for next time :)

As of yesterday, all official Apple responses (Apple Care/Apple Store Genius Employee) was that the processor whine is normal. Supposedly, the latest board revision (D) has reduced the whine by 1 to 2 dB but not eliminated.
I just returned my MBP today for a refund.
If any of you can verify the whine issues have been fully addressed, then I will purchase a new one.

Ive got a Rev-D, I'd HATE to hear pre revs if mine is 1-2db reduced. So to those who sent their MBP in what are they gonna do to your system?
If I returned mine that leaves me Mac'less

I hope they fix it. I ran a program called QuietMBP and it fixed the whine completely, but the drawback is that it decreased battery life (when I turn it on, 30 minutes were chopped off use time instantly).
I still have some speaker issues that I needed to get fixed (whine is biggest issue though). We'll see...

Yes, I heard about that software. My biggest gripe is that you spend over $2K for a machine that you have sacrifice the battery life to get the noise down to acceptable levels.
Don't get me wrong...I really like the MBPs. But I cannot take the noise and will have to wait to repurchase one until I know the noise issue has been addressed.

I cannot agree with you more. The thought of buying a $2,500 laptop only to send it in for repair 3 weeks later is absolutely absurd.

I took my MBP 2.0GHz to the Apple Store in King of Prussia, PA where I was treated horribly. Not only were they completely uninterested in helping me (the "Genius" told me my heat was normal without even turning my MBP on), I was fed dumb excuse after dumb excuse including the fact that my MBP isn't a laptop and was never designed to be used on my lap. I also enjoyed when I was told that since my MBP was the fastest laptop Apple ever made that I should expect it to be hot.
They also treated me nicely when they opened all the documents in my Documents folder and then launched all the Apps on my MBP at once so that they couldn't even shut down my personal information being displayed to everyone in the store.
I called AppleCare and they told me the whine is fixable. It's a logic board that needs replacing and that if I was concerned by the heat, they'd look at it especially since it will be in for the logic board anyway. Strangely the paper work listed my issue as issue 601 - Overheating, not any reference to the logic board.
To the person who didn't back up your HD, bad form. No guarantee you'll get your MBP back. If they replace it, they don't move your data. Always back up your data before you send it off anywhere even the Apple Store.

Everytime I have called about the processor whine, I was always told it was "normal". This is the first time I have heard of an Apple employee indirectly admiting that it is an issue by stating that it is fixed by swapping the logic board.
Very interesting. I wonder if this is a new revision of the board or whether it is the revision D which supposedly reduces the processor whine but not by much.

Mine will be going in for repair as soon as the box shows up - I've been told on the phone to make sure to back up my data, deauthorize my iTunes account and that the squealing noise will be reduced by 2 - 3 decibels but not removed and they'll in all likeliness replace the logic board.
I was recommended to buy Apple care while chatting about the issues, as in this case it's lucky my repairs will be covered..but "in future it will cost thousands to fix"..voice of confidence in their products there!
I still find that rather poor, if it's normal behaviour they should have a statement on their website to say MacBook Pros will make a squealing sound so you can make your mind up before you buy a very expensive computer.
All in all mine is going in for the squealing noise, misaligned keys with the return key getting stuck sometimes and a warping lid.
Hopefully it doesn't come back in a worse condition than when I sent it.

Lucky my ass! They're responsible for covering all defects for the first year.
I really dislike when sales people use "fear" in order to push an extended warranty, especially if they end up making the product look unreliable in the process. It's as if they're not even thinking about what they're saying.
For what it's worth, my PowerBook made two trips back to Apple for repairs (a new keyboard and a new screen) and always came back promptly and with no additional problems/cosmetic damage. I'm *extremely* impressed with how they handled it. I hope you'll have the same experience!!!! :)

Funny huh? Here's my take. I won't be getting my laptop back. I'll be getting a replacement. My MBP will be refitted with a new MoBo and sold as a refurb.
He said the whine will be gone. I never heard this 2-3db reduction. I don't understand why we have to get so many different responses!

My responses are based on a ton of "google" research and people's responses. I think there are a lot of responses because there is not a clear answer from Apple about the processor whine issue. Some people find it ok and others find it irritating. However, if you google for more information on the issue, people with brand new MBP still have the processor noise. Getting a new one at this point will not resolve the issue from everything I have read.
The biggest problem is how long will it take Apple to fix these issues? Remember that once you pass your 14 day window, you will need to have your MBP repaired. You can no longer send it in for a new one. So essentially, you have purchased a refurbished MBP at full price.

FWIW, it took Apple several months to address the horizontal lines issue with the new screens in the last batch of PowerBooks. I bought mine in Oct (the first day that they were available) and it wasn't until a month or two ago that people that shipped theirs in for repairs started getting their PBs returned with a new model screen that looked good.
Hopefully with the pressure of the MBP being their first Intel laptop (and that a lot of the media is paying closer attention to it), they'll find a fix for this sooner. :)

It depends on the Apple Care person you speak with. Technically, they cannot take the machine back w/o a restocking fee unless there is something technically wrong with the computer.
You need to have someone in the tech support department agree that you have a technical issue with your laptop that is a manufacturer defect.
If not, you can return it w/in 14 days of purchase but you have to pay a 10% restocking fee.
Apple does not yet consider the processor noise to be a defect.

I always had mine plugged in (for the whole three days I had it! though it was previously owned for a month) so I never heard the whine. I did have a lot of kernel panics, though, which is why I had to send it in. I sent it in on Monday and it's back in my hands today. I'm still at work but when I get home, I'm gonna watch out for the kernel panics and I'm gonna see if I get that whine.

I guess that's what they're called? Usually when I wake it from sleep, I get the screen with a black box in the middle that says "Please restart your computer" in several different languages.
And I always have it on sleep rather than turning it off.

Generally, yeah, but there is another way. If it REALLY tweaks you, return it, eat the 10%, then contest it with your credit card company. I did that when the Apple Store tried to charge me 10% restocking to upgrade a poorly performing iMac, and had no problems.
YMMV.

I do think they have already taken steps to address some of these issues. I would not be surprised if the MBPs that come out after the 17" MBP announcement will have some updated internals with fixes to these issues.

Grr. I got my MacBook Pro back yesterday and it says they replaced the logic board (I was getting a lot of kernel panics). I never had or knew I had the 'whine' problem until today. Ahh. Now I'm going to have to send it back again for the whine issue. And I noticed that it does get really really hot. I didn't know these issues before because I always had it plugged in on my desk. Hm. I should get these things done before I sell my 12". Sigh.

When I called it in, I didn't know that mine had any whining issues because I always worked off the AC Adapter. And today I had it in my lap and working off the battery for the first time and noticed the whining and serious heat (I wish this excessive heat would make fat melt away, which then I would lay on a bed of early rev. My MacBook Pro (purchased first half of March) has always made the processor whine, but I decided not to return it. However now the screen whine (the one which stops/decreases when the brightness is turned down) has started. Can this one be sent for repair? I'm clearly beyond the 14 days but they wouldn't be nice and let me swap it for an iMac of the same price, would they?
Ever since bootcamp came out I've seen more point of having the better processor and graphics potential of the 20" iMac for my PC games (I wanted to get rid of my old PC) - in some ways I wish i'd gone for that now as it will 'last' longer... Not that the MacBook pro ain't beautifuly apple.

I don't think you can return the machine at this point and get something else (this would require them to allow you to get your money back). However, you can have it repaired and you may be able to have it replaced depending on how much dust you kick up.

mmm i guessed a swap would be out of the question if it involved a similary expensive product - However, for example I might be able to swap the £1,429 MacBook Pro for cheaper iMac - say the £150 cheaper 20" imac with the upgraded graphics.
Anyway only apple will tell! If not oh well - I've still got a Mac, and I've still got a very good mac!

I doubt they will just swap products. Once you are past your window, you are committed. Fixing your current MBP is a lot cheaper than allowing you to swap out for a new product. Even if the new product is lower in price (unless you are talking about swapping a MBP for a iPod :))
mmm i guessed a swap would be out of the question if it involved a cheaper product - although you never know I might be able to get a same price swap... For example I could swap the £1,429 MacBook Pro for a similary costing 20" iMac, say with 1gb, 256mb grahpics and iWork... I would be willing to sacrifice the... £40 that I would 'lose'. But it will never happen...

Now THERE's an idea!
It's fair enough I supose - they could only sell the MacBook on refurbished so they'd get less money for it.... And for it to be worth it for me I would have to get the 256mb graphics upgrade on the 20" iMac, with the standard memory. It'll never happen.

I don't think they CAN fix the processor whine - just the monitor one. Somone said that the newest boards reduce the whine by a certain number of db but don't get rid of it. I suppose you could ask for a replacement (which would hopefuly have this new board) but there's no guarentee.

Last I know, Apple's stance is the whine is "normal". However, you can call Apple care and they may allow you to send the MBP in for a new mother board.
They key is though you can't blantantly ask for a new motherboard, you need to explain to them the noise you hear and they need to come to the conclusion that it is a problem that needs fixing.

I phoned up and got a repair booked in - the guy at applecare who answered didn't seem to know about the problem at all (although he put me on hold for ages so perhaps he asked somone else). Anyway they're gonna look at it and see if they can fix it (I also needed a new keyboard as the 'alt' button on mine hasn't been working reliably at all).
If it comes back and the noise is still there (the processor whine) i'll kick up a big fuss... I'll tell them I don't want any excuses - when I spend £1,429 on a computer I except it to have been tested beforehand. I'll try and demand a similar iMac 20".... But I get ahead of myself - hopefuly they'll just fix the goddamned problem.
And thanks for reminding us to backup all the files - It hadn't occured to me at all...
Finaly do you think they will kick up a fuss if I bootcamp installed? Perhaps blaming it for the problems ("it's only a beta sir, what do you expect") - i'll just have to reassure them that the noise has been there all the time.

The box that they ship you (to return your MBP in) has a checklist of a few things to do, such as unauthorizing iTunes (in case that they have to reimage your drive), remove extra memory that you installed after-sale, etc. As long as you follow their checklist, you should be good to go.

They've picked up mine allready - but the stff that came with it about how to package it didn't say anythign beyond 'put it in the box'. However the guy on the phone asked me when organizing the pickup 'how much ram do you have' - i was guessing that was so they would know if I had added any in. I didn't take it out (completley slipped my mind I might have to) but not the end of the world. I sent it in for repair not replacement, so i'm GUESSING they'd ask me before replacing it (at which point I can tell them - don't forget the ram!)
Thanks again,

How come you guys got a box? I just got an email with a link to print a FedEx return label. No box no instructions.
Also, my order status (for the replacement) says that its waiting to be shipped from the warehouse once they receive my broken machine. Does that mean they have a BTO to my specs sitting around? I was hoping they would actually give me a 'fresh ' one from the production line ..

Hmmm. I live in Virginia and my PB repairs have always involved them shipping me a box, and it was always via DHL Express.
Maybe if they have you print out a FedEx label and want it shipped back in the original box, they have plans of shipping you a whole new "everything" (vs just repairing the PB and shipping it back to you, like they always did with mine)?

Sorry I wasn't clear. YES, they are exchanging it for me. The new one gets shipped out as soona s they get the old one back. Hmm, maybe that's why I only got a label. Godo thing I saved the box though.

Do you think it makes a difference if it's a BTO? The sales rep told me that as soon as they receive my box, they will put me in front of the line, and expedite production. Which made me think it's brand new. But when I checked the new order number, it says that it is waiting to be shipped and will ship when the current one is returned.
The whole rev C, rev D thing might be bunk but the way I see it, it's a) psychological to want a new one and b) who knows , maybe production issues get fixed as the weeks progress. They could be correcting minor things in the line to prevent the problems ...

The week 14s *seem* to be ok. Mine may have been an anamoly since very few people have reported this sleep problem.
For what's worth, the heat issue was fine. Whine on the left side was nonexistent while the one on the right went away with Magic Noise Killer. No dead pixels etc.
Hope you have a good one!

MBP going back for a second time. I went back to the Apple Store and the genius got it to be really really hot. More than usual. The table stayed pretty hot for at least 20 minutes after we moved it off. Apparently they'll need to replace the logic board again. I didn't complain too much about the whine, which developed after the first time I got it back, because I don't notice it when the TV is turned up but I happened to mention it so it went in the report as well. I'll see it back in 7-10 days. :(

I have heard that the latest revision of the MB on the 17" has resolved the issue. You may want to see if you can return it for another MBP. If it is true that the 17" has the issue resolved, my guess is that a new 15" may have a new motherboard revision fixing the whine.
I have a 17" on order and will let you know if the whine is gone. HOwever, I won't be getting it until May 15th or so.

I called Apple yesterday, and chatted with a rep for ages about the whine. Mine is pretty strong I must admit, and unusable without the fixes. It kills my battery as well though. He said, that the whine was a known issue (I repeatedly asked, if he was sure it was the CPU idle whine, and not the screen buzz) and that I would need to get it fixed. He said that my serial number matched the ones with the issue.
I thought they were supposed to say it was within spec??
Has anyone had their MBPs succesfully repaired?

[QUOTE=knifegun]My responses are based on a ton of "google" research and people's responses.

For the record, I bought mine just over 2 weeks ago, and the thing is the quietest computer I have ever used... I haven't heard this "whine" issue at all. I just don't want everyone thinking that all of these machines are defective.
The heat is an issue on mine... but that is the point of the aluminum. It's metal, and it's going to suck up the heat from the inside of the machine. If you run a cooling pad underneath it to take the heat away, it stays more than cool enough. Now, I'm not an expert so I can't say if that amount of heat is normal or not, but it is a new processor, and a fast one at that.

You should feel lucky that your does not have the whine. There are actually some machines that do not have the whine. Apple knows what causes the whine and will be addressing it in the next release of the MB.

Well, after 2 hours of talking with Apple on the phone... They offered to send me a replacement. I had to go through 3 different people to get to upper management. He looked at all the issues and offered to take it back to applecare but deep down knew they could never fix all the issues 100%.
He also offered me the 17" for $300 more so I told him I'll sleep on it. I went to the Apple Store to look at it, but they had none (thought they might have taken shipment already). I think I'm going to go for it and get the 17"
I am realllllllllly hoping I don't run into the heat & whine issues with the 17". He told me I'd get at a minimum 1 hour more battery life in addition to all the other goodies. What do you guys think?

Can the 17" MBP battery be fit into the 15"?
On another note, (deep breath) mine is a week 12 build. It runs hot but not too hot that it would burn me. "Very warm" is a better way to put it.
The whine is there but I unless I am up late working or in a library, I can't here it. Also, it generally only makes the static/whine noise when running off of battery. When I plug it in, the noise quiets down after a second or two. The noise in mine seems to be coming from the left speaker area though. I have heard some of you saying it comes from near the disc drive.
I bought mine new on ebay, do I need to contact the "store" I bought it from on ebay or can I go to my local Apple store for complaints/tech support? What kind of info do they ask when you call the Apple support line? Mine came new and sealed in an Apple box FYI.
All of this sure makes me nervous. Some people seem like they have blown it out of proportion while others seem to have a genuine argument. I can't decide how I want to persue this problem on my own MBP. After saving many months and finally picking this computer, I now have some buyers remorse having heard of so many problems occurring. I can't afford to dump this much money into a halfassed product. This was my big switch to Mac and it seems I may have made an unwise choice. Yeah, there are always ups and downs to everything, nothing is going to be perfect but these issues seem out of the question and something that should have been fixed during testing phases. (read on, this doesn't completely explain how I feel. Just confused really.)
Do I take it back and try to get a new machine?
Do I try and get them to switch it out for a 17" MBP? (+300~) Who's to say the 17" won't have its own list of problems?
Do I complain enough until I get a refund and then wait for something else?
This is my primary computer. I don't want to go back to my outdated PC that I have already moved all of my files from. I have given it to my family to use. Now I have a predicament. I don't want to give this MBP up and need it for everyday use but would it be unwise to keep it and put up with its quirks and heat issues? I need something that is going to last AT LEAST a couple of years until I can afford to/justify buy(ing) a new one.
How bad are the problems REALLY? Is it bad enough that we can't live with it? Is it bad enough that it isn't worth keeping? Or is it just the quirks of owning a laptop, the things you just deal with?
My boss was almost convinced to buy one until we started hearing of their issues. He also would have had to run it in Windows most of the time for some of the money management programs and such but we found Boot Camp was having issues and some of the features in Windows couldn't be used. Boy, they sure make these computers sound like God's gift to the world when in reality, they are still JUST laptops that have their own quirks and manufacturers' problems like every other company out there.
Sorry for the long winded response. I don't know how to proceed at the moment. Not sure if this was the right thread to post in...

As I am sitting here, I do notice a random whine kind of noise that comes from above the disc drive. Almost sounds like the computer is moaning in the way the pitch starts low and gets higher and then lower again and stops. Reminds me of Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder.
I guess now that I have officially complained in a post, my computer is going to start whining all the time. It's doing it a lot right now.

IMHO, you buy an Apple because you want a quality machine with a top notch OS. The whine is not acceptable. Return it for a 17". If you still want a 15", you should have it replaced. The new versions of the laptop including the 17" should have the whine issue resolved.

Silly anomoly - I ordered an iMac 20" as a replacement for the mbp i sent back, and it says the estimated build time is 4 days. It also says the esimated build time for the apple care WARRENTY is SEVEN working days! Rediculous - and the woman at apple knew less than I did. Bit annoying as it would have arrived today if it had been 4 days for the whole thing.

wickedG35, how long ago did you get you macbook? Are you still within the first two weeks? I'm hoping I can convince Apple Care as well that I need a replacement, simply because I need the computer 12 hours a day and can't justify not working for 1 or 2 weeks, especially when I don't know whether things will be fixed.

No, I'm a month and a half into ownership (it's been at the repair center for 2 weeks). It's not going to be easy as they will just tell you to send it in to get repaired again. You have to have the guy you are talking to get you to upper management.
If your MBP is like mine with a ton of flaws, you can prove your case.

I imagine Apple would save money if they give me a new one, as opposed to the labor and parts and 5 times shipping the thing back and forward.

Trust me, they would rather repair it and hope that you stay satisfied with it rather than replace the whole unit itself. The ones that go back to repair permanently are probably stripped and the good parts are used to put together refurbished apple computers.
It's like pulling a fully built car off of the assembly line because of defects. They know they won't be able to sell it (if they had, people will surely complain as the case here) and lose money out of their pocket for parts and time spent assembling. However, there is this thing called customer satisfaction and Apple knows that it will only help them in the long run to make their customers happy.

I've sent my 15" three times now. April 3rd, 10th, and 24th and it's still a piece of ****. the logic board whines and a CPU temp utility reports CPU temps up to 59 degrees. the bottom is EXTREMELY hot.
if someone started a class-action lawsuit there would be thousands and thousands of people backing you up....

How complicated is this kind of thing? If it doesn't cost too much time and money, I'm in :-)
