Problem importing video into iMovie

Hello

I keep trying to import a .avi into iMovie but everytime it just comes up with the sound only and no video. The .avi plays fine in VLC but audio only in Quicktime.

Any ideas how to sort it?

Yes, you are missing a codec. I'm going to assume this is a DivX or XviD encoded AVI. Go get the DivX 6 QuickTime component for OS X from the DivX website. http://www.divx.com

Thanks for the tip. I've downloaded and installed DivX 6 but I still have the same problem!

What could it be? Another codec I'm missing?
 
Play the video in VLC, and while it's playing go to Window > Info and check under Stream 0 (should be the video track, if not check Stream 1). See what codec is listed there and post it in the thread.
 
Uh oh.. That's Indeo 4, which doesn't have a Mac OS X codec for Quicktime. Only QT for OS 9. Which means you're SOL.
 
Yeah, that crap is old as hell. You might try transcoding it out of VLC though into a format QuickTime CAN handle.

Thks for that - I've found out how to do it, but what codec should I choose so that it is compatible with iMovie?
 
Anything that QuickTime can read. An H.264 MP4 file would work... a DivX or XviD AVI would work (now that you have the DivX codec installed).
