Hey,
I was wondering if anyone knew what the Apple mobitor was that is transparent. It is CRT and looks like this:

Does anyone kno what the model is called or if it comes in the sizes 20"-21"???
Any news appreciated,
Interested in buying if in the UK,

i remember 15" and 20 or 21" versions in that format, in addition to the 17" ones we've got kicking around the uni here...

not seen any for sale for a long time however.

Cheers bigandy, do you know the model name for them????
I will be buying a macbook in the summer and will want to watch DVDs but from the distance that i will be watching them from, 13.3" will be too small. i have a 15" LCD studio display at the moment but it is still too small.

Only problem with a studio dislay is that i have a budget of £150. This rules out the studio displays but this old CRT looks really nice and is only around £40 but does go up to £100.
Does it come in 20-21" though because i have only ever seen a 17" one.

No, these ones were only avaliable in 17", it was the last apple crt monitor. The previous model was 17/19/21" I think, but it looks different.

OK. I've decided to settle with a 17" display as i like it so much. I will be buying a Macbook in the summer and it is likely to have the same ports as the ibook.
What connection is the Video Out Port http://www.apple.com/uk/ibook/specs.html so that i can get an adaptor to plug it into the ADC display???

They are really nice display's you can get them on eBaY UK just search 'Apple Studio Display' and you will find what youre looking for they can be picked up pretty cheap if you find a good auction,

They can be found for £40 on eBay but what adaptor would i need to plug it into a Macbook?? I am guessing the same ports from the ibook will be used

Since you want a 13" macbook and they are not out yet nobody can tell you for sure what adaptor you'll need.

But I just remembered something you should ask an apple tech before you buy it. I have the same transparent 17" apple studio display connected to my cube and when I bought my first powerbook the guys in the store told me I could not use this display with a laptop, as it has no seperate power supply. It gets its power over the monitor cable connected to an apple desktop. They were using some apple unique plug at that time. But laptops do not have enough power out of their monitor connectors, so the display will not work. You'll need a display with a seperate power supply for your macbook.

Now I'm not 100% sure about this as it was more than 3 years ago, but it is sure something to consider.....

Thank you for the info. I will have to look further into this to see if it can work and if not, i will have to find something else. Most proberly an old LCD TFT one.

Relax, you just need a DVI to ADC adapter like this:

There are others by third party manufacturers, so you're not even limited to Apple hardware.

Yep expensive.
The adapter is connected to the power outlet as well... so no need for any special connection on ay laptop. Just hope the MacBook has DVI.

If you read the comments on the link to the Applestore you'll see that a few people mention how that adapter won't work with the 17" CRT Studio Display. I would imagine it has higher power requirements or something, I can't say for sure though...

I myself have one, and it was very nice, but I upgraded to a 20" Flat panel Studo Display a while back... I have considered getting that DVI-ADC adapter for the 20" and running the CRT off the ADC port on my Power Mac. I'd sell you mine, but I like it[!], and it still runs on my G4.

It would be far easier to give up the transparent case thing and just buy a VGA connected CRT monitor of whatever brand...

I have loads of 21" CRT apple displays but they do not look anyway near as good so i would love that 17" one.

Wait a minute.

I'm pretty sure...

Apple initially made a 20" version of the ADC CRT Studio Display, BUT, it was so defective and buggy that they stopped the manufacturing of it, and at that point they had made the crossover to LCD so the 17" was continued for the low end briefly and then EOLd.

I had the 17", it's a beautiful monitor although it gets REALLY hot. Probably the reason they discontinued the 20".
