Ok so could someone please tell me that the Apple Cinema 23" is a better monitor, cuz that would be great. As someone who got burned by Dell in the past I am so hesitant to shell out 849 bucks on a piece of plastic... I really want to believe the Apple one is better but after reading this article that's becoming quite hard: http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2400

You could even lie to me, haha.

The funny thing is I really don't care about spending 250 more on the apple display (after edu discount) I just want to buy the best monitor.

Why oh why did the dell one have to have PIP,PBP(Picture By Picture),Composite,S-Video,Component and DVI?!?

Get the Dell...

I don't know about that. There's a lot to be said for aesthetics. It's SOO nice to come home to an ACD. It's a feel-good thing. I'd say if the money doesn't kill you then get the ACD. You obviously want it.

In a similar situation. Dell seems much better on paper. It doesn't look as good as the Apple though. The Apple screen looks more impressive to customers.. but no good if you don't have any that visit.

I've some time to wait for the next generation of Apple monitors, otherwise I'd lean towards the Dell (20 or 24-inch) and pocket the savings for something that goes wrong or is needed..

Yeah, if you've got a PowerMac, hidden under the desk out of the way and all you can see is a DELL monitor, it must be pretty depressing.

While I am just graduating college and this will be my computer for just freelance stuff when I move to NYC, it is probably a good idea to consider the aesthetics of the apple display... They are pretty close... Maybe I could forgive a few brightness issues and muddiness(it's not that bad I hear) even though I am an editor with a desire to possibly get into being a colorist.

I have the Apple 23" Cinema display. Though I love the aesthetic looks, the quality is not as nice as the Dell (believe there were many threads about this).

But it's your call...

Get the Apple... Much better colour reproduction and backlight quality.

if you need the inputs get the dell if not get the apple, ignore pink tinge issues, current displays don't exhibit the problem

or buy neither, and go with a really fast, bright, crisp, and most importantly ACCURATE ViewSonic display...

Then wait for 2407FPW, better panel

I'm guessing he's talking about the VP2330WB, which is a P-MVA panel (8ms GTG) and probably 16ms for black-to-white.

apparently not.

it keeps getting slated by reviews, which is a shame as I was looking forward to it (I think the design was a massive improvement)

The 2405FPW arguably has the better panel in terms of colour accuracy and backlight uniformity... this has been shown through numerous reviews and tests.

The 2405FPW also has more input options. You could hook up a console via S-Video or even Component for HD. The picture-in-picture feature is also nice.

If you're into pure aesthetics, however, the Apple does look more stylish. In terms of functionality and performance, the Dell wins hands down.

If you find out the Dell is the better screen I would buy that one and donate the extra $250 to a charity.

Yes...

ViewSonic has the fastest LCD displays that I know of.

They have one 20" model with a refresh of 2ms black-to-white.

The best display they have currently (VP2330WB) has only 8ms compared to the dell's 12ms mark, that's not that big of a whoop.

Most importantly though, the contrast ratio is far better on the Dell (amazingly) 1000:1 compared to Viewsonic's 800:1. Brightness is double on the Dell, 500 Candela vs. 250 candela. And apparently Pivot isn't supported on Macs on the Viewsonic. Let's not forget the Dell is an inch bigger too ;).

Oh and the viewsonic is almost $500 more... hmm... 849? or an MSRP Base price of 1299? There's a hard bargain.

Believe me I'd rather have a viewsonic over a dell too because I trust the name and the company, but the facts seem to hold. I will be getting this in probably June when the new Macs come out, but we'll see! May treat myself early.

Linky (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=31352). Any others about?

Very disappointing but we'll see what happens when they get some more substantial tests done.

Believe me, the last thing you should ever do is decide on a Dell because of the "facts" they have on their web site.

I can hardly see the Dell being a better display.

I mean facts from the review that I posted, and the hours of research I've done. If I was to go by specs on either company's site I would be incredibly stupid. Read the reviews of the 2405 and then tell me you feel the same way. Believe me, I hate dell with a passion, I've had bad experiences. But if this monitor is better, why not just break down and get/admit it.

But believe me I know what you mean, I can hardly see them being better either. But it's the "facts" and the "opinions" from countless sources. Find me a review that says the 2330WB is better, as I would easily pay more if it is.

Personally, I like the ACD's over the Dells any day.
It's mostly an aesthetic thing, purely because i dont like buttons on the front of my display, and also the lack of cabling. I never ever need to use PVP/PBP or anything like that. Just display next to display.

The ACD is worth it in my opinion. I even read that review and still prefered the ACD.
