what can i use that would be equivilant to Paint on windows..... just for basic cruddy drawing?

Well you could start out with TuxPaint (http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/), though that may be too simplistic (it does say its for ages 3+ :D ) Though for something with a little more kick and options I'd suggest Seashore (http://seashore.sourceforge.net/index.php). It has all the basic features you would need without having to step it up to Photoshop/GIMP. Seashore is actually based on GIMP, it just doesn't have nearly as many features.
