Behind doora at the RED camera booth, There was final cut running 2k footage in real time. Of cousr Apple did not conform or deny it... but it was there.

Is it possible that this was FCP on a maxed-out quad?

That's most likely what it was. AJA makes a card called the Kona 3 which handles 2K.

Why would they do that? Have Final Cut Extreme running and not tell anybody about it....As the last few posters said, it is prrobably just a really fast quad.

Hmm:
"AJA, Assimilate and Apple are know to be development partners"
software rendering in FCP is just the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of solutions which integrate into the suite. I doub't apple will ever release anything like FCS-Ex.

When's FCP 6 supposed to come out? Don't they usually release the new systems at NAB's?
