I don't like taking photos inside in the dark, but I'm going to be forced to for an event. Not forced, but I was asked :)

Situation: Bar, low light, night

Equipment: Nikon D50, SB-600 flash, Nikkor 18-55, Nikkor 28-200

Any suggestions as to what I can do to get max quality out of the event?

Depends on how far you are from the "action". You may need to boost the ISO to 400 or 800 (maybe even 1600) to get some distance with your flash.

Give us more details if you can.

Well, run at a fast ISO 1600 and use a fast lens f/1.8 or better. You wont want to have your shutter slower than 1/60 sec or the pics will probably be blurry.

I would strongly suggest you shoot in RAW if possible to bump the brightness when you convert it to .tiff or .jpg.

If you can use a flash, do it.
