I just downloaded and tried (via parallels) Google SketchUp. Wow! Does anyone else use this? Being a tinkerer by nature, this is possibly the most useful little app that I have ever used. It easily allows me to visualize and design things without worry! yeee! To give you an idea how easy it is, here is a design for a brick oven I am going to build this summer (it took me about 1 hour from installation to complete product):

I use SU professionally and it's the most intuitive program I've ever used. It's so much fun, I'd nearly work for free, .... nearly, but not quite.
Keep using it and you'll enjoy being surprised as you discover its full scope. The free (Google) version is very little crippled from the Pro version.
The Mac version of Google SU isn't available yet but shouldn't be too long appearing.

yeah it is, i've been trying out the free version for a few weeks now (time's up, gonna have to buy it now), made a bookcase/cd/dvd tower with it. great stuff.
i agree with you though, it's so much fun i'd feel bad charging for working with it.
already have one of my clients liking it so much he bought it...maybe i can get commision...

the free version isn't out for mac yet. So I'm stuck using it via parallels, with an emulated video card. So yeah, its painfully slow... but oh so much fun!

Is this an external company that was developing a product, that was subsequently acquired by Google (like I think was the case with Picasa), or did they develop this app in-house? Looks neat. :)

Google took over the original developers, @last, a couple of months ago.

Ahhh, thanks. That's what I suspected. :) Still, seems very nice. :)

I've used SketchUp 5 and its pretty awesome. I think google sketchup is a stripped down version if I'm correct, but it's still awesome none-the-less

I have tried a bunch of 3d modeling programs (including Maya) and I actually prefer sketchup!! (obviously if I had the time to really learn maya it would be choice, but not right now)
Here is another model I made, took about 2 hours. It is a studio I am putting in the garage (after I clean it out!:D )

looks like a good tool for storyboarding.
how long would it take to create say 10 quick scenes to represent a story?
