Multiple readers have reported that their early orders of 17" MacBook Pro's are now shipping.
The 17" MacBook Pro was announced (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/04/20060424085129.shtml) by Apple at NAB on April 24th.

Awesome! Anybody on here got one yet - it'd be lurvely to see some photos and see if they get quite so toasty as the 15's!

No vapor for you!
I'm curious whether they have a thinner body/thicker lid compared to the old 17". The old 17" body seemed insanely thin already, but the total thickness remains 1" and I thought the lid had to be thicker for the iSight.

Probably very similar to the current MacBook Pro's. ;)

I can't wait to read the reviews.
Normally I just buy the latest and greatest 17" PB as soon as it is announced.
But given the enormous quality issues Apple has been having of late, especially with the MacBook Pros, I've decided to wait this out.
Maybe I'll skip a generation until next year accordingly.
But for those buying now, I really hope they get a beautiful and Apple-quality Mac.

Maybe they'll ship it earlier... just maybe! :)

mine still says estimated ship date: May 11th, and estimated delivery date: May 16th! :(Heh, mine says ships May 10th, delivered May 17th--how does the math on that work out?
At least in CA Apple's shipping estimates are usually quite high, though, so I expect if it does actually ship on the 10th I'll have it on Friday. Sure hoping they make that ship date, though--I REALLY need the thing.
Feel like I'm playing with fire getting a first-run major product revision from Apple, but then I got a first-gen G5 tower right after they came out and with the exception of the Radeon 9800 failing (under AppleCare, thank God), it's been a trooper.
As for the 17" MBP, I came into sudden need of a laptop due to illness, and was wanting to get acquainted with an Intel Mac for experience purposes anyway, so I'm taking the risk (not to mention the huge deal they are in comparison to the 15" at this point). Figure they probaby got the major kinks worked out messing around with the 15" models, so the 17" will, with any luck, be a little more stable. We'll see, though, and hello, AppleCare if they didn't.

My new 17" has shipped (stock configuration)...expected delivery Wednesday morning. Last FedEx scan showed it in Alaska already (from China), so we'll see if they hit the mark.
And just FYI, I spent the extra $18 for "2-day" shipping. Maybe I saved a day or two from the "free shipping" option, maybe not.

My 17" MacBook (custom configuration) is on the same shipment as yours. Mine says it actually left Alaska and is due to arrive here (Oregon) Wednesday also.
I also spent the extra for 2-day shipping (I thought it was $15?) hoping it would get here a bit quicker.

My MacBook Pro had an estimated "ship by" date of the 8th May, and delivery of the 12th May. It was shipped out yesterday morning (6th), but still says delivery date of the 12th.
I hate the wait... it's so frustrating.

With all the comments about the shortcomings of the 15" MBP I was going to wait for rev B, but a funny thing happened when the 17" was announced. Before I knew what I was doing I'd gone and bought the thing. Got dispatch notification for mine yesterday too, though delivery date is quoted as on or before May 17. Being as that's a whole 10 days away I hope it doesn't take quite that long, though judging by other posts perhaps there's some sort of obligatory European tour beforehand? Not sure I can stand the excitement. Having run a Mac and PC in tandem for the last 2 years, I am so ready to ditch PCs for good (after 23 years of thinking a computer is just a tool and nothing to get excited about ...)
Meanwhile I've been taking a good look at a neighbour's 15" MBP. It certainly runs warm but can't hold a candle to this friggin' Toshiba of mine which regularly passes out from overheating despite being run sitting up on stilts and getting Dysoned once a week. No whine on his one. Mind, having gotten used to fans running full whack 24/7 for the last year of the Toshiba's 2-year life not sure as I'd notice anyway. Reading these forums I can't help but think that some of you guys just don't know when you're well off.

I just got my apple notice for my 17' MBP and I'm getting an estimated arrival date by May 11th. The hardest part of waiting is over for myself. I can't wait to sell my 15 inch MBP. Even though what I normally use the computer for would probably be adequate for just an iBook. I was playing with a 17 PowerBook and I could really tell that it was much bigger than my 15' MBP. Really you couldn't get any better than the 17' MBP. I can't wait to use mine when it comes in.

Got mine at 9:24 am this morning. I drove to receiving (across the street) just so I could pick it up before the guy made his rounds. I've been tooling around on it for maybe an hour, charging the battery, etc. Not getting hot at all, and quiet as a mouse.
It's glorious!

wmealer, have you tried pushing the envelope on it?
You can try to peg the processors with the command line "yes > /dev/null" in two windows. And then try to monitor the tempature with this:

Download that Temperature monitor, and see if you can make that work first. You can watch any temperature changes as you do your designer stuff, etc.
But if you wanted to make the CPUs go to 100% easily, open Activity Monitor and watch the graphs. Run Terminal, open two windows. In each (because you have to do it once for each processor), type:
yes > /dev/null
You won't see anything happen in the Terminal window, but you'll see a processor suddenly get really busy. Do it for the second processor, and see how the temperature (fans?) react over time.
Just hit control-C in each Terminal window to abort it.

Ran your temp test...
CPU usage: 1.5% (CD in drive) -- temp: 44 °C = 111.2 °F
CPU usage: 50% -- temp: 65 °C = 149 °F
CPU usage: 100% -- temp: 81 °C = 177.8 °F
Throughout this test, the speakers or keyboard never changed much to the touch. I never noticed any loud fan noise, or whining whatsoever. The bottom surface was naturally warmer, but it felt about as warm as the side of a refrigerator. It's definitely not so hot as to make you take it off your lap. However, this is my first laptop, so I really have no point of reference.
The loudest noise it's made so far that was really even noticeable was burning a test CD. Kind of a pleasant "whooshing" noise.

Very interesting. It certainly sounds promising! How long did you let the CPU run at 100%? Is 81 degrees the highest it got?
As comparison, I have an original 17" here (3 years old), and I run Temperature Monitor. I know if the temperature gets above 140 degrees F, the fan comes on until it cools to 132 or so...then they turn off again. If I run Energy Saver with Reduced Processor Usage (slows to 867 Mhz, turns off L3 cache), the computer rarely gets above 115 degrees....so the fan never comes on and the computer doesn't get hot. (Note: this is the generation before Apple added the "Automatic" processor usage setting)

May 8, 2006, 03:25 PM
I let it run a good 5 minutes at 100% CPU usage. 81° was the actual peak temp. Most of the time it was a steady 79, but it would spike to 80 or 81 every so often.

For what it's worth, I've been up and runing on my new 17" MBP for over 24 hours now. It's a nice machine, and I can confirm the quiet, whine-free operation. However, others reports of it running "cool" do not reflect my experience. This sucker gets frying-pan level hot after running multiple applications. I don't see any difference between this and the 15" heat reports I have read.

I've got mine now. I was trying to push it to the limit on the train this morning (battery power only) by running iTunes with visualizer (no cap on framerate). It seemed to peg the processors around 75%. I added some more load by scrolling in iPhoto, yes > /dev/null, etc....and the highest temperature I got it was around 180 degrees F if I remember correctly (and I don't think I heard any fans come on at all). 145-150 seemed to be the norm when the machine was busy. Around 120 is the bottom, when the machine is just sitting here as I type this.
I'm very happy with the performance. The heat is a natural byproduct. I don't believe mine is experiencing "excessive heat".

Well I got mine on Monday, BUT unfortunately I had to send it back for a replacement. When I opened it there was a nice crescent moon shaped gash in the center of the screen. Who the hell knows how that happened, but now I have to wait another few days. From the short time I did use it though I gathered that it is extremely fast, and I know I'm going to love it.

Yup. Mine was extremely bad. As I described in another thread, a call to Apple advised me to take it to an Apple Store where the genius told me that it was too dark for his liking, and that since it's so new that I might want to wait a few days to see if any product alerts come up. I just didn't want to wait so I called Apple and they captured it. I am getting a credit and buying my next Apple laptop in store.
