Reset button on iBook G3/800?

quick question. is there a reset button on the iBook G3 as there is on my TiBook and some other models...if so, where is it located?

Considering my 1G PB12" is effectively an G4-equipped iBook G3 coloured silver, it might work the same way. Hold down the Power button for five seconds and the iBook should turn off. Then just turn it back on again.

But true that...I'm pretty sure, if what you want, is to force it to turn off when it's locked, that you hold the power button....

ah, sorry, i may have not been clear...i'm looking for that tiny little button that you have to poke w/ a paperclip. similar to one i have under my TiBook. Really I'm just experimenting, see if i can get it to target disk mode before i gut the machine to salvage the data.

Well, if it is like the PB12 it doesn't have one, though target disk mode can be entered by holding down T whilst it's booting.

An attempt to enter target disk mode has been unsuccessful. The computer is essentially fried, just trying to see if it's alive enough to get to target disk mode w/o putting the HD in an external enclosure. So, if it doesnt have a reset button to give it one last shot...i guess I best whip out the screwdriver. Hopefully the data is did not go w/ the logic board...which appears to received a static charge. Thanks friends.

Are you talking about reseting the PMU? If so:

For iBook (16 VRAM) and later models of iBook, there is no physical reset button.

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

On a side note, I don't think it will solve your problem. I'd try it anyway though.

One last thing you could try is to disconnect it from the mains and eject the battery for at least 30 seconds. I don't think there is a backup battery on that model. Sounds like it's dead though.

Some G3 ibooks had a button above the headphone jack, so maybe thats what your ibook has.

If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC power adapter.
Remove the battery.
Press and release the reset button (shown here) located above the Audio/Video port on the left side of the iBook (Dual USB) computer by inserting the end of a paper clip into the small hole and gently pressing the switch once.
Wait 5 seconds.
Reconnect the AC power adapter.
Put the battery back in the computer.
Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

Appreciate your help. No luck though...I will be performing a memorial ceremony on the iBook before the autopsy here in a couple of days. Thanks again.:)

Have you tried booting into open firmware? You can reset whatever you want from there.

Hold cmd-opt-O-F
type: reset-nvram
type: reset-all

Your mac should try to reboot at this point.
