View Full Version : Red iPod, MacBook on Tuesday?

TheRegister ties (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/05/12/red_apple_kit_coming_q/) together some thoughts to speculate that the previously rumored (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/01/20060131123048.shtml) Red iPod may be coming this Tuesday.
This is based on this day being an otherwise big one for the Product Red charity which the red iPod is supposed to be a part of.
Also, since the iPod and MacBook are rumored to be released together (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/05/20060508164940.shtml), the site concludes the MacBook could also be released that day.

Take you partner, here we go again....
Red iPod = somewhat of a good idea.
MacBook = so amazingly over-hyped on here no matter what Jobs reveals it will disappoint.
Personally I'd like to see a refresh of the iPod line and some leather cases for the MacBook Pro. Oh, and an iPod HiFi Express to take on Altec's smaller inMotions. That would be so sweet to see the fall out on here from an event like that.

Maybe they'll release a red MacBook too. I'm hoping the MacBook will come in a few different colors, so a red one could be possible. Eh? Pleeeeease?

I totally agree. But I like the red ipod idea. The red and black u2 one did very well....I think the red one will do great. I'm sure Apple has done some research in the case market to see what color is often purchased...I would have guess blue though.

Nor have I but you can make one at ColorWare and they look sweeeet.
The red wheel on the black background just looks very cool, much sharper than the all-black iPod and much tougher than an all-red one.
Well, I can't get ColorWare to work properly at the moment - my dial-up is being silly. But take my word for it, they look cool.

Somehow I doubt the whole "red iPod" thing. However, if they come through with a video iPod with a 4" screen, I don't care what color it is.
Now the new iBook/MacBook -- that would be useful. I already have by MacBook Pro, but a huge number of Maccies with their elderly iBooks are waiting to join the Intel fray. Some of them just want updates to the iBook, others want innovation, and then there are those who want the multi-OS options that people like myself have had for a while.
New 'Book -- makes sales happen.
Red iPods -- um... it would be cute to say it "puts them in the red", but no, it just has no real benefit for either Apple or it's customers.

Does anybody know how the iPod mini sales were related to the differnet colours?
Don't think the pink one was sold most... ;)

iPods are about status, and Red iPods would sell -- they'd be must haves on college campuses.
Remember these bracelets?

They were livestrong before livestrong.
As an old fart, I would feel sort of alienated by this. Any visible politics that leads to judgment and lacks fundamental activism ("Why didn't you buy a Red iPod? I can't believe you're not doing your part to fight AIDS!") leaves me wary.

This thread makes me want to toss my computer out the window, not because im expecting a new macbook to be launced on tuesday to replace it, but because i keep getting my hopes up that this stupid thing will get released. And yes i know that i could stop comming to MR and not have to deal with all these rumors until it's ACTUALLY released, but this rumor has become like crack to me, i cant stay away from it no matter HOW unhealthy it may be for me.
My hopes although may be smashed eventually because if this thing includes integrated video, i'll simply just have to pass and wait til i can afford the MBP. Anyway, here's to another weekend of maddness!

I don't pretend to speak to the veracity or plausibility of this rumor, but red seems like a departure from Apple's normally understated industrial design. Red, reduced to the wavelength level, is an agitation of the retina--whether that is pleasant or repulsive, it just seems so different from matte aluminum, neutral lucite or even pastels of the iPod minis.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I like the neutral look--I think I would shudder if I saw an all-red notebook. Just my opinion.

it's going to be a red hot chili iPod :)
That's exactly what I first thought when rumors started circling about a red ipod.
As for the MacBook, it seems that everytime an event or a date scheduled as a release date, something else is introduced right out of the blue. Using the rumor as a cover up for something else? Dont think so, everyone knows it's going to be introduced it is simply a matter of time. A red MacBook , just keep it at white and black;).

It's not that I'm against a RED iPod- the cause is certainly worthy enough. Too many people are dying of AIDS and not enough is being done- But is it for Apple to get involved with??
Millions are affected and die each year from cancer- where's their iPod?
And that you see is the problem.
The iPod is a music player. It plays music (and video in some cases). It shouldn't be playing politics.
Regardless of how worthy the cause it should be the National Governments who help fund these causes from their budgets or who legislate against the major pharmaceuticals who withold the drugs on basis of profitability.
Worldwide sales of prescription drugs today stand at $600 Billion.
The biggest selling prescription drug is Pfizer's Lipitor ( Treats high cholesterol) with annual sales of $12.9 Billion. The other 7 best selling drugs have sales in excess of $5 Billion each.
I live in a capitalist society and believe in free market forces but the amount charged for these drugs is obscene.
We all pay dearly for the pharmaceutical companies greed.

Even good intentions are commodified these days.
I think having an identity is essentially a soporific. Everyone's branded, and even if you seek an "alternative" identity, it'll just be sold back to you at a markup.
And when people's identities get wrapped up in thinking they're actually doing something to help people because they've bought the "right" iPod ...
God. I need (or am) my own island.

Most people pay for their own greed - if you look at your top selling drugs how many are for self inflicted illnesses that could have been avoided with lifestyle changes earlier on. Statin drugs, blood pressure drugs and those for type 2 diabetes - people need these because they've been greedy (and they're unfortunate enough to have bad genes). The difference between HIV and other diseases that do so much damage in the third world is that it is a worldwide problem and as such has attracted the research budget of the drug companies.
I don't disagree that the drug companies should do more but if you want them to start behaving like charities maybe we should all start being completely selfless as well - let's face it, no one here really NEEDS a macbook or a new iPod, why don't we just send the money abroad. If apple do decide to release a new iPod to help raise money for charity and it achieves that then why not. It's not like GAP and american express are not for profit organisations either.

I really don't think the red iPod is going to be for AIDS. It's going to be a red hot chili peppers iPod, Apple has confirmed that they are making a special edition chili peppers iPod. So I don't think that all this talk about the political implications of a red iPod has any real bearing on what's actually happening.

This just came to me, based on a cool mockup of the new MB and iPod on some website covering all these rumors: the new MB and iPod will be sold AS A PACKAGE (optionally, anyway). Buy either separately for full price, or get them together for, say, $50 off the combined price. This would be a pretty appealing package for, say, college kids/grads, because if they're in the market for a MacBook they might decide "hey, I need a new MacBook but that new iPod is so cool I'll probably get one eventually anyway... oh wait, I can save some cash on the boxed set?! Score!" You know what, I'm a 40-something dad and I might go for that myself (OK, probably not).
Really goes with the 'digital hub' concept nicely, and explains why Apple seems so intent on releasing them together. It's the entry-level 'iLifestyle box.'
(N.B. I did NOT hear this from a friend/uncle/lover who's the mgr/owner/stockroom boy of an Apple store. I just think it makes good marketing sense.)

Red iPod may be coming this Tuesday.
This is based on this day being an otherwise big one for the Product Red charity which the red iPod is supposed to be a part of.
This whole 'Red' thing is a complete con, from the world's biggest self-publicist Bono. I hate this guy. You have to spend £5000 on your selfish self on your Red Amex, buying Red t-shirts from Gap, Emporio Armani and the like, and even that amount will yield only 1% or £50 to the good cause. Why not just donate the money directly, and not line the pockets of these global brands who could care less about someone dying in poverty?
Before anyone retorts 'at least he's doing something' that is crap, and this is clearly driven by profit for the brands involved. If anyone involved in this self-serving money grab really cared about the suffering of AIDS victims, they would put pressure on the drug companies who make the therapies, to deliver them to those in need AT COST.
At least Bill Gates (yes the one you all hate) gave $50 million of his own cash to AIDS charities in Africa. And no, I don't think he did it to sell more copies of Windows.
Feel free to slate me....

If the world`s wealthiest person doesnt give away money to charity then who else would? Bill Gates might be the most hated man on these forums but personally I second your thoughts. He`s donated so much in Africa and Asia. Not only for AIDS but other things too. But then it`s not something he`s not supposed to be doing. I mean he has more money than any one else in the world. He has to do atleast this bit.

That's what happens in Photoshop when you save it as a *.png, Photoshop tends to make everything 'vibrant' but when you save it it looks more washed out.

I think a bright red iBook/MacBook would be the perfect accompaniment to a bright yellow Nextel phone.
Maybe they can design it so it makes that "Boo-boop!" noise whenever it puts up a selector followed by the selector's contents being read out aloud with a large amount of background static. The volume could be automatically adjusting so the user can still hear it, even in a loud area like a restaurant.
The red Macbook could also speak each key pressed through the loudspeakers, y'know, just to help the owner know which key they pressed.

I was in my local Apple store today and overheard an employee say that they were out of stock of a variety of items in preparation for Thursday...
Just another thing to get the heart racing!

It would make more sense if apple just made like 5 differnet ipod colors again... then people can choose the ones they want... Red is a start, but I'd also like to see green and blue ipods also...

People can easily custimize the iPods to their own individual liking by sending them into Colorware.... It's fairly inexpensive for iPods - get's a little pricey for the computers but i've been highly considering sending in my MBP and getting it painted jet black.

iBooks and Powerbooks are still shipping within 24 hours. Updates don't seem imminent to me.

Let me put it this way.
We have none of:
iMac 17"
iBook 12"
iBook 14"
Macbook Pro 15" 1.83Ghz
Macbook Pro 15" 2.0Ghz
Powermac Dual Core 2.0 Ghz
Powermac Dual Core 2.3 Ghz
Powermac Quad Core 2.5Ghz
Well, basically we have one 20" iMac, and about 2 17" Macbook Pros.
Everything else is non-existant right now.

If I hadn't been so obsessed and sceptical, (and listened to a friend) I'd never have come across this site, been hooked on it and going crazy without a MacBook... But I'd have bought an OLD-AS iBook and been none the wiser...

Over here in the UK, Bono is guest editing the Independant newspaper. As I understand it he has launched a global brand called "Product Red".
Perhaps a good day for a red iPod then.

Yeah saw that but thought just the opposite. What if they plan to release a new red product every few weeks to keep up interest...

I wouldn't buy a red macbook, or ipod, but the important thing is that they just release the darn things already. They've already missed most of edu buying season... what are they waiting for?
Apple is simply missing the whole thing, not just the education buying season (as importasnt as that is)!
They'd like us to believe the Intel transistion is going smooth. Geesh, read what seem to be the majority of these posts and it is anything but.
They jumped the gun transitioning well ahead of some of the most important (or at least commonly used) graphics software out there (Adobe).
The books at least seemed plauged with quality problems including, excessive heat, hinges, uneven screen lighting, whining processors and at least one spontaneously combustible power conector.
On one hand I'm chomping at the bit for a new (x)Book. On the other I'm afraid to put my money down. I can't lose productivity business-wise and don't want to be frustrated in my play time.
I've bought first gen SE, Quadra 700, 5215CD, PM9500, PB140B, PB5300, G3 iBook, iPod mini, PB G4 (Ti), iMac G5. This is not even a complete list. The only problem I have ever encountered was with the PB5300. Oh yeah, caused because Apple recalled the power adapter that came with it and replaced it with one that fried the 5300 immediately upon pluggin it in!
I currently run the G3 iBook, PB G4, 20" iMac G5, and G4 tower. Guess which one saved my butt in January? Which one was the ONLY item able to correctly read the DVD's I recieved from a client? Yes, the old, lowly G3 iBook.
Franky, much as I want an Intel (x)Book, I'm considering a G4 PB.
Oh yeah, while I'm at full rant, I'm not happy aboutthe total dissalusion of any Classic support.

OK, here's my question.
Is it worth an extra $150.00 just for black? Sure looks cool but...
I spec'd max's on memory, hard drive and applecare and that about what the difference came out.
Opinions please.

Grrrr, only the top end comes in black..... oh well.
£1300 nearly with a modem and Applecare!!! I would have been happy with the cheap one in black tbh.
Never mind, I'll buy it anyways!!
Specs aren't too shabby, and those screens are awesome (except in the sun)

Per default, the HD is +20GB. Still, I think it's a kind of rip-off. Thankfully, I don't like black anyway.

Now, I didn't expect the local Apple Store to have any of these available for purchase, but don'tcha think they'd have at least one demo unit?
Think again.
Apple delivers what, a web page?
