Help, how do you put videos on ipod?

i just got a new video ipod, and as such i cannot wait to watch some of my movies on there. however, i dont know how to put the videos on my ipod. i read online that everyone says to drag the video file into itunes and it will appear in the video section, but this doesnt work. i dont understand, i drag and drop and nothing happens. i try dragging and dropping in my ipod and nothing happens. there are no instructions with the ipod so can someone help me out? i just have a bunch of videos in various formats

well how do i just put a video into itunes? seriously, this is such a joke. i try and go into preferences to manually manage my vidoes, and when i click on the video tab, it wont let me click on anything. why were there not any instructions included, this is making me hate my ipod.

Don't get too frustrated. Apple hasn't put auto-conversion into itunes because it tends to be more complicated than with audio, and there are copyright issues involved.

Is the best app i've found for quick conversions from something already on your harddrive.

If it's from dvd there's handbrake lite, which I haven't used but I've heard is good.

Once you have a video file (once iSquint is done), drag the finished copy right into iTunes (like you would an audio file).

First, make sure iTunes is on your boot drive, then make sure your movies are also on your boot drive. Now, drag them to iTunes (if they are .mov or .mpg or .mp4 files). They should show up in your library with a little box TV shape near the right side of the title section. To make sure they are there select Date Modified (or Date Added) as your sorting tab and look at the very top (you sometimes have to grab the scroll bar when at the top, move it slightly down and then back up to make the latest added files show up at the top). Are your videos there? If so, select one at a time, go to the Advanced menu and select Convert Selection for iPod. After each is done, it is ready to be updated to your iPod for playback. Note that I don't think iTunes can handle .wmv files. For that you need to convert them with iSquint or something to .mov or .mpg or .mp4.

What format are your video files in?

iTunes has some pretty specific formats that it can handle, the iPod even more so as they must be within certain resolutions and bit rates. If a video is in the correct format for iTunes (generally anything QuickTme Player can handle) then you can convert the video into the correct size for the iPod.

If your videos are one of the correct formats for iTunes then it's a simple case of drag and drop but you can't drag and drop something that won't work (avi's divx's xvid's etc. they need to be .mov or .mp4 (using either MPEG4 or H.264 encoding).

These formats are stated on the iTunes and iPod websites.

I've just got a 5G and I have loads of music videos (not from iTMS) on my Mac. If I convert for iPod in iTunes do I end up with 2 versions on my mac? An iTunes version and a full size one?

If I remember right, yes. iTunes will put the converted ones into a folder in the iTunes Music folder (I think). After converting, select the newly created one and select Get Info and see where the file sits, and this is where all the videos that are converted will go.
