Speaker connection to MacBook Pro

Can anyne confirm weather the 17 MacBook Pro will work with my Logitech z680 5.1 speakers? I tried using coax but no sound and MacBook not recognized by the pod at all using this connection. The only other option is optical which is 30.00 bucks and has to be ordered through Apple. I don't want to order it unless I know for sure it will work. Thanx to anyone who can pass along some success.......

The digital output on the MBP is optical, not coax, so you will need to get the optical cable with mini toslink end in order for it to work.
