I'm trying to burn an MP3 cd, so a data disc I guess. When I put in a blank CD it doesn't show up on my desktop. How do I put stuff onto it to burn?

You can make a burn folder in finder (control click on the desktop) or you can go to iTunes and burn it from there.

When you insert a totally blank (new) CD, nothing happens?

What are your CDs & DVDs Preferences? They should be something like this...
47586

Make sure under "When you insert a blank CD:" you DO NOT have "Ignore" selected.

Also, I'm assuming you are not using iTunes to burn this CD? You can create a burn folder (Right-Click Desktop > New Burn folder), put the files in there, and when you are ready, click "burn."

is there a way to burn mp3 cd's with itunes? just to clarify I'm talking about burning 100 or so mp3's onto a single disc, not just burning mp3's to a regularly playable cd.

Sure...go to the preferences for Burning. You can burn as audio, mp3, or data.

What happens if you do it in iTunes? Set the Burning preference to either MP3 or Data CD, create a playlist of songs you want to burn, and select Burn Playlist to Disc from the File menu. If there's no disc in the burner, it should prompt you for one. Does that not work?

That works, but I'd rather burn through finder. Itunes will burn to the disc but finder won't

Have you tried restarting? I know, it's a long shot, but it's worth a try. Sometimes problems will just fix themselves.
