I accidentally dunked the end of my adaptor [the part that plugs into my mac] in my dog's water dish. Is it still usable or should I buy another one? I just don't want to damage my powerbook. Thanks.

You should be fine...just dry it thoroughly with a paper towel and then let it air dry for a while. Just be sure it's COMPLETELY dry before you plug it into your PowerBook.

Was it plugged into the wall at the time? I agree with WildCowboy, just give it a nice long time to dry off. It should be okay. :)

No it wasn't plugged in when it happened. But my powerbook was low on battery life and is in a coma right now, so apparently I can't shut it off. [?]

How long should I let it dry out? It's been about 5 hours.

Unless it's pretty humid where you are, five hours should be ample. I reckon you can plug it in now.

Of course, the longer you leave it, the stronger the guaranty that it'll be fine. :)

I'll leave it for a few days.. just to be safe.. in the meantime, how do I turn off my mac? lol

Hmm, doesn't the water damage the inside part of the adaptor?

Wait, we're talking about the bit you plug into the Mac, not the power brick aren't we?

The water may have damaged it, but I really doubt it. I think twenty four hours should be more than enough. As for turning the machine off, you could hold down the power button, or pull the battery, both of which will shut down your Mac but I don't recommend either since you're effectively crashing the machine. I'd just leave it. :)

But as mad jew knows, putting water on things actually dries it out... :D

Nah, I put everything I need dried off in the microwave for about 10 minutes. Nice and dry :D

DISCLAIMER: do not try this at home.

Yep, the small part of the adaptor.

I tried holding down the power button, didn't seem to work. I'll just leave it be.

Thanks! :)

Is it already shut down, maybe? Meh, it doesn't matter one way or the other. :)

Yeah, and never listen to Peyton. He looks like Peter Pan. :p

Your laptop will automatically switch of completely once the battery depletes so far that it can't maintain it's sleep with it anymore. Don't worry about it.

If your PB supports safe sleep then you won't even loose any work you still had open.

Oh and I don't need to remind anyone not to put metals inside microwaves, do I? :D

Ooops. Wrong thread.

It's been more than long enough now, but, for future reference, the plug already has quite a bit of separation between the prong and the outer ring, so a good shake (or three) and a bit of toweling off should have made it perfectly usable in a minute or two - you just need to ensure you can't short-circuit it, and with scales that large (compared to circuits), you don't need to worry nearly as much.

You're talking about the end part that plugs into the PB right? If that's the case, I feel a lot better.

Hehehe, this reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where his belt touches the urinal and he throws it away. :D

Sorry, that was random. Hope you're all dry and back up and at 'em! :)

Yup. If it happens again, shake shake shake, dry with napkin, good to go.
