I live next to Antibes, France, which has one of the largest marinas on the Mediterranean for private boats. Some of these are ridiculous! With the Cannes film festival coming up, I'm expecting some real monsters in the next few days. This weekend I walked down to the quay and took some pics. If any other new ones come in I'll post new ones as well. Enjoy!

Not bad, but check out this one:

The beautiful blue one also had this matching car parked out front:

I found this link: http://www.ybw.com/yw/mirabella/

Wow, a 100 meter sloop! Any idea who owns her?

She's actually about 75m LOA but her rig is nearly 90m - i.e. nearly twice as high as Nelson's column!

http://www.mirabellayachts.com/mirabella5/

She's owned by Joe Vittoria, former chairman and CEO of Avis car rental.

Awesome isn't she!

And she's crusing the Med in Spring 2006 so you could well get lucky.

Thanks for the link. What a sweet yacht. The interior is just phenomenal. I'll be sure to look for her, since I bet the Cannes festival might warrant an appearance. Though, for $300,000 per week for rental, it could be yours as well :).

We now just need to get iGary a gig doing panoramas of the interior :)

I'm reviving my own thread for a good reason...the Octopus (http://www.yachtcrew-cv.com/resources/yachts/Octopus.htm) just pulled into port here in Antibes last night. I was at a bar across the marina when it came in. Man is she huge! Next to her is our regular, the Carinthia VII (http://www.machinespotter.com/yachts/12/luxury-yacht-carinthia-vii/) (96 meters) and she was just dwarfed. Although I'll say aesthetically, I prefer the Carinthia (low standards, eh? :p ).
To add to the ridiculousness, Allen's second-largest yacht, the Tatoosh (great name,eh?), is also docked here.

I'll try and get some pictures today while it's light out, if possible. Not sure how long Mr. Allen is planning on keeping it here, though.

Whilst on holiday in |Porto Heli, greece, the guy who lived 3 doors away was a greek multi billionaire who got his cash from the shipping industry. His personal yacht cost 50 million back in 1994 and this year, he sold it for 35,000 and is currently having a 120 million yacht built. Unfortunately, his son had taken it out for the month up to Athens so i couldnt see it :( It has 12 staff it is that big.

Yeah that Wallypower yacht, aside from having a ridiculous name, is fecking awesome.

Was it this that featured in [the film] The Island?

Edit: yes it was: The black yacht in the dreams of Lincoln 6 Echo, shown later in the film (the Renovatio) is the Wallypower 118 super yacht. The boat is build almost entirely out of carbon fiber, Kevlar and glass with a teak-deck. The boat features 2 Cummins engines, each delivering 370 BHP. In addition, 3 Rolls Royce gas-turbine engines provide the speed of 60 knots cruising speed. Boat value is $25 million. IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399201/trivia)

You know the problem with these boats?

You really miss out on a lot of good exploring opportunities because of their draft, and half the fun is piloting and navigating.

No thanks.

That's pretty nice, to put it lightly. The Octopus, though, has a crew of 60!

yeaaaa but if you recall there was enough room inside for a lower engine room deck, a HUGE open area for a missle AND room enough to hide and whatnot in the middle of the pontoons.

now that I think of it, that is the same boat pretty much, size n all, and yet, logistically its impossible.

Oh w/e its the mooooovies.

For a motor yacht, it's a reasonable amount. For a sailing, let alone racing, yacht it's very little. The yacht I race has a draught of 2.15m (it's 10.5 metres long).

No it isn't.

I was gonna say that..

I quite like the blue, I wouldn't turn it down if I was offered it anyway :p

I was living in Portsmouth when the Mirabella V was being built, saw it sailing out - didn't it run aground at some point and had to be repaired? I heard it cost a lot more to build than expected, but because VT had agreed a fixed price it was sold for a loss. (Someone told me that bit anyway..)

So today I finally got over to the marina while it was light out, and got some pics of the Octopus. Unfortunately the Tatoosh had already left harbor. Anyways, here you go:

She just loooooms over everything else here, and we don't have a small marina either.

Loading on a couple of small runabouts.

Yes it really is the Octopus ;)

And finally, my favorite from around here, the Carinthia VII, looking good as usual.

Actually, the boat in the movie was a mock up! ;)

BTW, if you compare the two very closely, you will see many differences even though the overall shape is roughly the same.

Neat looking boat! :)
