View Full Version : Post your iPod "setup"

Well, we have all those "post your (...) setup" threads, so I thought I'd make one for iPods. BUT this one is different. Show your iPod either in its dock on your desk, or show it on the road.
Now let's see some pics!

So what do you think about the ROKR and SLVR? Is the iTunes client acceptable?

The SLVR is slick, although the numbers can be hard to press since the keypad's flat like the RAZR. I think iTunes is pretty pointless on both phones. Well, I barely use the feature since I have an iPod but the transfer rate to the phones is REALLY slow. I suppose I'd use it to hold a couple of songs in case I wanted to someone to check out a song. The ROKR holds a good charge even after playing a few songs on full blast. I was hoping I'd be able to play a song to my friends while on the phone but it becomes disabled when the phone's in use.

Oh, and CHAOS STEP, I love that little guy!

It's probably crooked because it wasn't plugged in properly into the dock connector for the purposes of shooting the pic (and getting the backlights to light up).

Very, very cool idea. I'd like to steal it. Any chance of a photo of inside the dock and under the desk to see in more detail how it's done? Thanks.

yeah that comment makes sence, I'll post my "setup" while judging the thread. Honestly one gadget does not constitute a "set up".

Also considering 1/3 of the post in here are people post pics directly from the apple site? yeah, "hey look, we can all post the same pics! AMAZING!!"

I just wish people would think before starting (or digging up) these threads.

you already have :D

Look I see the point of ONE setup thread, "post your mac setup" that makes sense because it shows a wide variety of stuff. But for some reason people seem keen on breaking it down to the point of "post your mac mini 1.5 core-solo with wireless keyboard setups!" and it seems rather pointless.

Ohh actually scrap the mini, let's have a post your keyboard set up! or post your earbuds set up! Post your mighty mouse set up!

Plus that thread with people posting pics of their phones from the manufacturers website...yeah that's needed

It just seems 4/5 of the "set up" threads are nothing more than a p****ing contest between MR members. So thus, I feel the need to take the piss out of them. You don't like it? Ignore me :p

I have a sense of humour, so i can see what you are saying, but like the rest of the 'setup' threads it is all about how people organise, store, work and live with their apple hardware.

That said just a photo of an ipod with nothing else is a tad bland.

Not that I am bigging myself up (too much ;) ) but if you see my photos in the first page, I was showing a ipod holder that really slipped under the radar, but which complements the ipod fantastically.

I also like the pics of the desk mounted docks - so I guess this thread would be cool if people showed pics of unusual / custom set ups etc

What does one do with 4 ipods?

I had 3, and gave one to my boyfriend, and I have a hard time explaining to people why I have 2, they don't get it...I just one one of each kind!!!

I bought the 3G, when the cold of the Canadian winter and some moisture damage rendered it somewhat flakey in operation (still works but it's dodgy sometimes) I ordered up a 512MB shuffle the day they were released at MWSF '05.

My Dad found the mini whilst on a morning walk up near their place, he handed it in to the cops, nobody claimed it within 8 weeks so we got it back. I tried everything to find who may own it but there was no information on it so my folks gave it to me as a Christmas present because they couldn't afford to buy me a new one.

I won the nano in a survey prize at my Uni Graduation a little while ago.

I use the 3G as a jukebox - it rarely leaves my inMotions.
The mini is now my main repository of my "most listened to" music, all my iTMS tracks are on it, it's replaced my 3G as a portable music player.
The nano has replaced my mini as my main iPod, I've got all my top rated tracks on it and the most recent of all my podcasts.
The shuffle is a replacement for my old 128MB USB thumb drive. It also happens to play music.

Definitely overkill but I just can't bear to part with them. I'm hoping to fully replace my 3G with either a 5G or whatever replaces it this year - it's just getting too dodgy to continue to rely on to hold all my music.

Pretty sure that modding the iPod firmware is not particularly popular. So far I have not seen anybody with modded firmware on their iPods - probably because there's not much point. Some people have iPod linux installed but they're few and far between.

I think modding (in terms of what it gives you) is for diehard nerds only on the iPod. The iPod implementation of Rockbox for example is the only port which works worse than the native firmware.

Anyway, did anyone manage to work out how that built-in-desk dock is configured underneath or did the poster of that picture post up shots of the underside of the desk?

I would imagine the docks are mounted within the desk surface and the cables securely attached with the locking pins filed off. That way you could use the universal dock inserts without having to reach under the desk to squeeze the cables and release the iPod - you'd just bung it in and rip it out like with a regular dock.

A cable would work, just file off the locking pins like I said and superglue the bugger in there - much cheaper than buying two docks. Just mount the inserts into the desk, Araldite the cables in place with the locking pins filed off and you're set. Sure, it's a bit crude but it would work just fine and beats buying multiple docks.

Yes it is. (http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page)

It doesn't say it is "officially" (:p) supported yet though:
PodLinux is currently safe to install on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation iPods. Development is currently on-going on later generations of iPod, including the fourth generation click wheel, mini, U2, Photo/Color, Nano, and Video.

I think if you look around the forum (http://www.ipodlinux.org/forums/) though you'll probably be able to read about people who have it working on their 5Gs.

Thanks,
Jeff.

Since you all seemed so interested in mods. I thought I would show you my 40GB Photo which is running Floydzilla (an interface for iPod Linux):

The picture is of those Matrix codes falling down the screen (a continous loop).

Tetris-one of the many games (alot more than I have commented on here) (sorry for the reflection!)

The periodic table which is pretty cool because when you move over an element and press the Select button you get loads of info about that element in note form.

OMG that's cool:cool:
:D

how are the controls like for doom?

They're actually pretty good:
MENU= Forwards
Rewind/Fastforward=Turn left/right
Play= Shoot
Select= Action (eg open a door)

It runs well and is very responsive.

EDIT: At the bottom (http://ipodlinux.org/Doom) of this page is a link to a video of iDoom running to show how smooth it is.

How is music playback on iPod linux?

I tried it a few months ago on one of my iPods (15gb 3G)and it was quite poor! The songs played back choppy, often skipping to the point of being like a scratched CD. I promptly switched back to the normal iPod OS.

What format where they? If they were MP3 then try playing some OGG files. I told you iPod modding was cool:D

Ok, I googled around for anything interesting in iPod mods. I havn't found enough interesting for me to work on mine. Any pointers? Show me what mods are cool for iPods.

(BTW, my iPod resets everytime I pause it. How soon till the next iPod you think?)

Well theres iPod Linux which has been li nked to but theres also iPodWizard (http://www.ipodwizard.net/cmps_index.php) which (get bootcamp ready) is a Windows app but i s realy good at editing all the menus and icons (like do not disconnect) on almost any iPod

(BTW: i typed this on a co m puter with a broken keyboard and ill edit mistakes when im home)

Yeah the playback is pretty poor especially because (atleast at the time I installed it) you couldn't browse your files whilst listening to music.

TBH yesterday was the first time I had booted it up in months.

Thanks,
Jeff.

Has anyone been so bold as to include the iPod as the sole source of music for their home stereo equipment?!!

As the iPod is the focal point and CD/Cassette are secondary along with 12"/45mm records?

I bought a scratched up iPod for really really cheap and decided to replace the case. I think it looks kinda cool in the dock. It was originally a black iPod, and I replaced it with a white front cover.

Maybe in my next mod, I'll repaint the white cover to something else.

I just have my sole 60GB iPod 5G White. I don't have a dock or anything special, just tons of anime series' on it. I'll hopefully be getting an iPhone when they come out if certain things fall into place.

I was actually planning on replacing the case on mine too. Where did you get the new front case from?

This is where I usually keep it nowadays.. unless I want to watch a video on the TV. It works great because when the glovebox is closed it can't be seen by a potential thief.
