It has actually, the first time i restarted vista it froze on the password screen. I wouldn't read too much into it thought as it is only a beta and it was running on my imac. It looks miles better than win xp, but as you say knowing microsoft it will probably be just as bad as windows xp.

I thought Vista couldn't yet be loaded onto a Mac. Tell us how you did it.

i take it from another thread Macer is not using Bootcamp

I wanted to reinstall OS X, but actually booted windows instead. So stuck the windows xp sp2 cd in my imac and held C. The imac them started the windows installation. I made one ntfs partition from the windows xp disc, when asked and done a quick NTFS format. When the imac rebooted i kept my finger on the eject button, then i sawpped the windows disc for the vista beta 2. Then just follwed the onscreen instructions. This was not a dual boot solution, but i will try that tonight when i put OS X back on.

You don't need boot camp. Bootcamp is only a tool to partition the hard drive and create a set of drivers for windows xp sp2. Vista had all drivers apart from the airport and bluetooth. Haven't tried getting them to work yet, as after i installed the macintosh drivers for xp sp2 and restarted the imac vista froze at the login screen. And at the moment i am on my imac G5.

i think the new ALT+TAB thing is "nice enough", but it's just come along at the wrong time. it should have been years ago, maybe when expose came out
but it's microsoft. that'd never have happened. ;)

Forgive me for missing it, but what's new about alt-tab? I've been using that to switch applications since Windows '95. have they changed the functionality of this, or just changed the visual layout of it?
Thanks,
Dylan
Edit: Maybe nevermind. Is the picture above your post the "new" alt-tab? If so, I'm not sure I like that. I'm more of a text guy. How's the old saying go...A word is worth a thousand pictures...or something like that? ;)

I'm not impressed, having found exposé useful for a long time. I can only think that pointlessly-obscured stacked windows will impress only those people who have blindly stuck to the late 90s user-interactive offerings that XP has in spades.
I really can wait before my work pc is blessed with this gumph.:(

It is not alt and tab, it is the windows button and tab, which is the new expose lookalike. The old alt and tab is still there and does the same thing as it did before but with a nicer GUI.

Norks! I rarely (practically never) use the windows button .... so it looks as though I'll only experience this little treat when my left thumb misses the Alt button. Oh well.

Two ways - by either becoming part of the Microsoft Developer's Network or by getting it through other not so legal ways. But, apparantley a public beta should be released soon, a bit like the new Office Beta.

you konw
their alt+tab replacement is not an original idea either. there are softwares that let you do that in XP right now. but the original idea was actually by sun
they have something called project looking glass. about 2 years old. here are some screen shots. i got the live CD to try it out a while ago

is there a way to dual-boot with Vista beta 2? I have an MSDN license and downloaded it. Tried to install and it gets done, but on reboot gives errors. I've had no luck in dual booting. and it won't work in Parallels at all.

True, but it took Apple 2 years in-between Panther and Tiger, and it took M$ 5 years to get from XP to Vista.
EDIT: Actually, it will be more like 6 years when Vista actually comes out.

I`d like to ask one thing bout that ALT+TAB function. Is there an option to activate this command with just hot corners? Coz it`s the hot corner which makes expose so easy and useful. If we still have to cycle through windows using ALT+TAB; I think it`s just another crap. A crap which is made to look better by covering it with fancy covers.
Can someone check n confirm if VISTA can use hot corners?

You can dual boot, apparently you install vista on the windows xp partition. But when vista asks you which partition to install it on you have to delete the 200mb partition first. Then pick drive c: which would be your boot camp partition. Then after vista reboots you have to repair the vista partition. All the info is on OSx86.

I don't know if you can say it is a positive or a negative thing. But you can say that the next mac OS will blow vista out of the water. That is guarateed. Hell OS X blows vista out of the water now never mind leopard.

I have Vista and OS X on a dual boot running perfectly here. I even managed to get full Aero Glass working - and perhaps, most surprising of all, I managed to get sound working from both speakers or headphones.
I would post a guide on what I did but I'm far too lazy. If enough people show an interest I'll get around to writing some basic step-by-steps.
Oh, 20" iMac by the way.

Not hard to get the sound working or the glass as the drivers for the video card and sound card are built into vista. The only things that didn't work when i installed it were the airport card and the bluetooth, oh i forgot the isight aswell. Everything else seemed perfect. I also thought it was aload of microsoft crap again.

Is this a positive or negative thing?
I don't understand the question:o
I guess it is a positive thing that Mac users are getting more frequent upgrades, and a negative thing that Windows users have to wait so long between (seemingly) small upgrades. (Although I'm sure M$ did some stuff other than put new clothes on XP)
And, it is also positive that the frequent OS X upgrades work properly, so I would say the frequent upgrades is positive for me.

I was just curious on how others feel. I know some people who despise the long wait between Windows OS releases. I also know some people who felt they were throwing out money for minor upgrades for OSX releases.

Vista is more than just lipstick on the same old Windows pig. Microsoft has done some pretty major upgrades to key components. Tom's hardware did a pretty good write up on it. You can look it up here (http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/31/windows_vista/).
Although I did almost lose my lunch when I read the last page.Microsoft's new Vista is surprisingly entertaining. The new look of the operating system is good, and lets it outshine its Linux and Mac OS competitors. One notices repeatedly while working with this software that Microsoft scoped out its competition very carefully.

Run the Macintosh Drivers for WindowsXP executable for Boot Camp. While the setup programme is running, wait for the Macintosh Drivers folder to appear in programme files (but be quick, it's only a temporary folder) and make a copy of it.
You can then install the Airport and Bluetooth drivers manually, as they're inside the Macintosh Drivers folder. Airport, I can guarantee works. Bluetooth I'm less sure about, but my BT keyboard works.

Thanks for the tip, but i have removed the beta version of vista as i thought i seen somewhere in vista that it was only valid for 2 weeks. Not sure if this is true or not. Anyway i removed it now because i can't be bothered messing around in 2 weeks sorting out my hard drive.

Umm, I think if you use boot camp to install Winblows XP, You can have it overwrite the Windows Partition, and have it stay away from the mac partition. But what self respecting Mac user would want to install ANY copy of windows.
Anyways, you have to remove the 200 meg EFI partition to get Vista to boot. You will still be able to boot OS X, but I'd suggest backing up first as this will cause problems in removing the Vista partition through Bootcamp.

You can try formatting the EFI partition first as hfs, as the vista boot loader tries to boot from the first FAT/NTFS partition, and the EFI partition is formatted as FAT

you see I have a different view. I think apple updates it OS way to fast and M$ is taking way to long.
I think apple really needs to slow down it OS releases because by the time programs and developers adjust to a new OS the next one already out. (like by the time they really make get adjusted to tiger Lion will be out) Remeber some software is being develope for over a year for the big stuff. So lets say they start working on a project now that will take them 6-9 months to make they never really have time to get it set up for tiger and figure out the bugs there and then boom lion comes out and now they have the orginal program bugs to fix on top of the new bugs that come into play switching over to lion making it harder to figure out where the problems are.
That being said I think apple should double the ammount of time bettween new OS (to 3 years) and M$ needs to cut there in half (to 3 years). That is a good middle ground. 1 year to learn the new OS. 1 year to make software than works and 1 year to use the stuff before having to adjust.
