What's with the iMacs GPU???

What if a normal person who plays alot of games wants to buy a mac and doesn't wanna spend $3000. What option do they have?

I would like to buy an iMac, but I need the X1800 video card to play Doom 3/Quake 4/CoD 2 at high qualities.

Is apple going to wake up and put a decent GPU in their iMacs?

The iMac is a consumer machine. It is not, and never has been designed for a) gamers, b) video/photography editing, c) audio editing, or d) anything else professionals do.

I'm sorry this is towards you, but I have become annoyed at these questions (not all on this board), but people expect high end features in a mid range machine.

well the fact that Apple doesnt offer a pro machine that is intel (ie. windows ready) yet doesn't help their cause....

yankeefan hit it right. This is a mid level consumer machine. As new cards come the iMac will be refreshed, by then there will be new games that spank that card. Then you will post another thread about Apple and their GPUs. If you want to game buy a PC and shut up, please.

You sound like all the Windows folk who wanted to switch when the MacBook hit, "OMG, intergrated graphics in a consumer notebook, Apple sucks". Because you expect high end graphics in a inexpensive consumer notebook. Ha.

Buy a Mac Mini and an XBox/Playstation/Wii?

If you want to play serious games on a PC based platform you are looking at around $500 for a graphics card $200+ for the CPU then add in RAM, Motherboard etc. These will keep you near the top of the spec tree and able to play all the latest games at full resolution with all effects for a year or so then it's do the same again.

The iMacs main purpose in life is to run iLife. Games, photo editing etc. can be done, but just not as well as the Power Mac.

You expect a machine to have a dual core CPU, X1800 GPU, 250GB HDD, Wifi, BlueTooth, 20" Display, less than 2" thick for what $1699..

Those GPU's produce a lot of heat...if you want High Quality, deatail etc...you got to pay...applies everywhere.

If someone wants a desktop that is just as powerful as pretty much any out there right now other then the gpu, then rip apart your MBP stick it in a desktop case, stick a giant heat sink on there becasue you will have so much extra space, then boot it up, there it runs OSX and XP, and will be pretty quiet...:rolleyes:
