View Full Version : Is this possible?

Here's my problem.. and I know it possibly cannot be solved.. but.. maybe..

I need to work on a 10-15k SCSI Drive for my music projects, and the drives I have are connected to my dual G4 tower (with an adaptec dual scsi controller card)

I also do editing and arrangement on my macbook pro.. I would love it if I could access those SCSI drives directly from my macbook pro.. instead of having to save data on the tower, and then transfer it to my macbook pro, etc...too much of a hassle.

My question is, can I connect the macbook pro to the G4 tower via a ethernet cable.. and access the SCSI drives in that manner? Is this even possible? Or, instead of a networking cable.. put the G4 tower in target mode.. and access all the drives via firewire?

I know that the whole purpose of recording on a SCSI drive would be defeated due to the bottleneck caused by the network/firewire .. but I just want to access the drives for data transfer, not to do active work on. Any help.. :)

Oh, it's absolutely possible.

When in the Finder on the MBP, hit ⌘-K to connect to another system and enter the IP address of your G4. Then you'll need to log onto the G4 and select drive(s) to mount. Pick the external, and you're all set!

Edit: I was assuming they're both on the same network - connected to the same router, for instance. Is that - or could that be - the case?

Great! Thanks.. I'll try that out. Yep, they're on the same network.. phew.. I was going crazy trying to look for an Expresscard/34 SCSI adapter.:D

You are correct, but I believe that he needs to first enable file sharing in the system preference on the G4 tower.
