what is your definition of a geek and a nerd and the differences between those two terms?

beez7777
Feb 20, 2003, 06:15 PM
well, to start, i usually take the "nerd" as sort of a negative sounding word. perhaps someone who studies a whole lot for school. geek maybe would be someone who's interested in stuff most people aren't, such as enjoying technology more than they should. i usually don't feel insulted when people call me a geek. both i would say refer to a person with above average intelligence

according to dictionary.com:

nerd
n : a student who studies excessively
n. 1. [mainstream slang] Pejorative applied to anyone
with an above-average IQ and few gifts at small talk and ordinary
social rituals. 2. [jargon] Term of praise applied (in conscious
ironic reference to sense 1) to someone who knows what's really
important and interesting and doesn't care to be distracted by
trivial chatter and silly status games.

geek
n : a person with an unusual or odd personality

howard

a sort of off definition could be...

people who are obsessed with something that isn't mainstream/popular

janey

My definition of a geek is basically the same as the OED or dictionary.com except that geek implies wealth (not necessarily money wise), maturity, a love for technology and BRAINS while nerd has a negative feeling to it and kinda implies that you're a horny teen who loves computers. ;)

alternately from dictionary.com, the first thing that comes up if "nerd" is entered:

nerd also nurd Audio pronunciation of nerd ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nûrd)
n. Slang

1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

also, there was this:
nerd

n. 1. [mainstream slang] Pejorative applied to anyone
with an above-average IQ and few gifts at small talk and ordinary
social rituals. 2. [jargon] Term of praise applied (in conscious
ironic reference to sense 1) to someone who knows what's really
important and interesting and doesn't care to be distracted by
trivial chatter and silly status games. Compare the two senses of
computer geek.

let's check geek, first definition, again:
k)
n. Slang

1.
1. A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
2. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.

sure, there are Beez's definitions too, but these i think are primary.
a point about the etymology of geek:
[Perhaps alteration of dialectal geck, fool, from Low German gek, from Middle Low German.]
maybe random.

there's nothing in the term "geek" to suggest any for of wealth, except that of eccentricity. almost without exception, this word connotes a fairly high degree of anti-social tendency, whether due to social ineptitude or just a general dislike of people. this is not often regarded as mature. i would admit also that geekiness implies fairly strongly a love of technology.

there's also nothing in the term nerd to suggest that the person masturbates, or thinks about sex any more than anyone else. the definition, and its uses, all preclude any logical inference that the person is predisposed to such activities/thoughts. Nerd also has a possible implication of great intelligence, and both geek and nerd strongly imply great sophistication in a VERY limited number of fields.

both terms have classically (thinking, within the last 50 years) been used to refer to unattractive, overly and overtly studious people who have numerous social troubles.

über, i am not sure when you decided that geek had such a world of greater sophistication and finess then nerd, but there is sure nothing to be found in a dictionary or in my personal experience to suggest that.

generally, this word is going to be "improperly" applied--i.e., it will be used as some form of hyperbole. for instance, i would call myself a geek, and a nerd, but i have a fair share of friends, and i get out on friday nights. i also spend a lot of time on my computer, do very well in school (though i am not very studious), and fill in other stereotypes of geeks and nerds. they are not a black and white words, by any means, and as there are few true geeks/nerds by definition, they are indeed words that get thrown around. they both have a great deal in common, at the root, however, have been historically used synonymously, and bear little in and of themselves to connote your suggestions, über.

he's not a hobbit at the time. he's a mini-me monster with an incredibly complex, engrossing multiple personality complex that allows him to literally take the leading role in the movie. his character in the book, however, is much more interesting.

i dont want to start a book argument here, but those books are
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over-rated. They are soooooooooo
boring. All of the lord of the rings series and the hobbit. I barely
managed to read them all. I kept falling asleep because I was

starts writing about the lineage of the dorowindll elves in Llorithain

Oh, and in the movies, Legolas is too perfect. But they are still
great movies.

I ate it up, lol. and read the silmarillion too. i'm shocked you don't like him, because he's honestly about as good a storyteller as they come. he honestly doesn't spend much time on the lineage--if you go and check elsewhere. it's also highly skimmable; i skipped over half the songs the first time through.

1+1=0, .9 repeating equals 1.
How does 1+1=0, think binary.
How does .9 repeating equal 1?
If x=0.99999999...
and 10x=9.99999999...
then 10x-x=9x, which is 9.
Divide both sides by 9 and you get one.
;)
2+2 does not equal 4. 2+2=5.

look, i am sorry about this mess. i don't mean to insult people by quoting them all the time. in many of these threads, such as this one, i find myself arguing--not in a bickering way, but just to make points. i don't argue just to be right. if you read through threads, i am often wrong. i come to macrumors, as many do, to learn things. i quote people out of courtesy, to make sure they know that i am responding to them, so they don't have to go flip through posts to know what the heck i am talking about. it's become a sort of etiquette for me, and i don't think yourealized this, or you wouldn't be offended.

if you look through my posts, and please do, you will see that i also say "hey! right on!" "thanks for the help!" and so on. when i am unsure of something, i don't fudge it. when i am, i am adamant about it, as many people are. sometimes i am wrong (see adam attarian thread); i'm sorry, it happens, of course. i admit i am wrong, too. please, i don't like the light that you are painting me in, and i do feel that you brought this up with little precedence. i think you've been duking it out with me in that stupid mac v pc thread too much. that's not how i normally am around here. sorry if we got off on bad feet :(

i think, from certain perspectives, the songs are really neat. but when i am all into the plot and trying to get through stuff, bam, i walk right through them. but the second time around, i looked at them, and i think they serve a great purpose. LOTR is not a light novel. it's the legacy of a genius, and certainly not something to just sit down to, unless you want to skim it. it does bog down, especially in the beginning. but, as you say, it's an amazing plot, and in it's own way, it's just beautifully done.

that's an interesting point; i agree more thoroughly the more i think about it. but i think, and i am wondering what you would say to this of course, jef, that geek in this sense would be a subset of nerds. like, your math, computer, and electronic geeks are also nerds of the same category, and then you have the literature nerds (bookworms?), the history nerds (buffs?), and so on, that aren't geeks.

In the 8th grade, I memorized the first 72 digits of pi just for fun. I still remember them and I will now type them from memory. (Honest - I'm not copying and pasting from anywhere.)

I hope I got it right.

I taught it to myself gradually, adding 6 digits at a time. I got up to 90 digits at one point but I guess my brain overflowed since I only retained 72 in my long-term memory.

Meanwhile, I don't know my own driver's license number without looking every time.

So does this make me a geek, a nerd, or both?

I don't know, that rabbit was rather small.

Not sure on the gender, it was kinda ambiguous (right word?) it didn't seem to go one way or the other, maybe it was niether, could be why it has a desire to kill.http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=251718

Actually, I use an "almost proof" to convince people (at least those I meet in person) that I really did memorize 72 digits of pi, even when there is no handy display or printout of pi nearby (such as on the lunchcourt at school).

Here's my argument:

(1) I can close my eyes and recite the number while you write it down. Then I can recite it again and you can check it against what you wrote. This proves that I memorized some 72-digit number.

(2) Compare the number to however many digits of pi you know, even if it is just a few. This shows that the number I memorized is at least similar to pi.

(3) Memorizing pi is more impressive than memorizing a similar non-pi number. So if I bothered to memorize a 72-digit number that is similar to pi, it must be pi. I'm not crazy, you know!

you're really digging a hole with this geek thing... knowledge is worthless without application. so, in your head, with the 72 digits of pi, what is the most precise volume of a sphere radius 3 meters?

4/3πr^3 i think. go for it!

you could offer her the shoe in your 'tar, and then we'd have a national security crisis on our hands, no sex under any circumstances, and everyone must give all their belongings, including articles of clothing, to the government for inspection. torture! and bad for all the folks up north ;)

it is funny how the smartest people in the world are geeks and nerds...no doubt about that

outside of bill gates, woz, and a few others, geeks get so off topic, possibly due to their great minds, that statistically the "successful" people in society are the more focused, but less academically gifted individuals

i think al gore is a geek and a great numbers guy but the one who succeeded in gaining the white house has an iq of 97...or in the higher ranges of "dull-normal":p

the smartest people i have seen in my area live in santa cruz, ca (hippietown...lost in the 60s, etc) and there are tons of geeks, many of them with degrees, advanced degrees, and intellectual knowledge, working at some coffee shop...the panhandlers there and in nearby berkeley, ca have got to be the smartest and most educated panhandlers in the country and a lot of them, and people with minimal jobs who are not doing much better, are often geeks

also, did you know that a person with a master's degree is more likely to make much more than the average PhD (ultimate geek degree)?

society does not generally reward geeks, girls still shun them, and the life of a geek is often a very lonely existence

but the years from 97-99 was a string of years where the geek shined, but when the rest of the world realized that many of these geek dot.coms, which were once as pentiful as weeds, never made a profit, the big bubble popped

the only other time geekdom seemed popular was in the 80s when revenge of the nerds came out...most of you won't remember that since it was before a lot of you were born:p

why not remane this thread the "geek sex and other crap" thread?
This is WAYYYY off topic now, what does sex have to do with the average geek?
Geeks don't really like to discuss sex and stuff like that...right?
Steve's a genius and so is Gates-but hey at least they have attractive wives.
As for me, I want Gore because he's a democrat and so is Steve Jobs (i think).
I want a PhD in computer science one day :)
