Windows XP on MacBook - quite slow

I am a bit wondering about the performance of my 2Ghz MacBook (1GB Ram) when it is running Windows XP. Whenever I start an application (or even when I just load a new website) the mouse hangs (or jumps) for a moment and the application window opens with delay (and often stepwise).

Windows has been properly installed and by now there are just a few basic applications installed (=> system is not overcrowded at all). I think this shouldn`t happen on a powerful system like the MacBook.

Does anyone experienced the same problem or knows what to do against it?

You have some issue. It is very fast on mine, and I am a switcher accustomed to fast PCs.

I would be quite surprised, if a virus is the reason. I have up-to-date antivirus software and a firewall running since I installed XP on the MacBook.

Just did a new scan of my system with the AVG antivirus software but it didn`t indicate any virus or malware.

Do you have any other suggestions what it could be?

and yes, I am connected to a secured home network (WLAN) via a router. But nothing more than that.

It could be the anti-virus that slows it down. Which anti-virus software do you use?

Edit: I see now, there's probably some anti-virus called AVG. Do you know anything about AVG's reputation for being a resource hog? (I don't)

AVG is a very good scanner. Norton is the hog.

Did you install the boot camp drivers? Windows will run like crap until you install the drivers.

May be thats the reason we all hate WinBlows so much. It doesnt need any virus/spyware to bug it. It the biggest Virus itself:D .

Jokes apart. I too feel a slowdown once in a while(maybe once out of 5 times I boot in XP). But it only stays for a min or two. Somethings definitely wrong with your system. May be try n reinstall XP if possible. Or first get a good virus scanner and scan check the computer. I`ve heard AVG is good but never used it personally. I m currently using ZoneAlarm. There`s no problem as yet.

Are you using IE:eek: . I know you arent. But just in case you are, please do your self a favor and switch tp firefox.

But AVG does slow down the system incredibly! I hate that app as well as nortons. as both are real time, AVG hogs resources anytime to launch an application .... it doesnt trust anything.

I suggest running disk defrag, disk cleanup, and clear internet cache (offline pages too) & cookies. Reboot & shut down AVG just for running apps - NOT INTERNET.

Actually I decided for AVG because I thought it is not a resource hog. However, according to your suggestions, I did an uninstall of AVG and restarted XP. But the problem still persists. I also tried to turn off all back-ground running programs, which immediately become suspicious when talking about system slow-downs (like Firewall, Messenger, etc.), but nothing changed.

I also have the bootcamp drivers properly installed and yes, I am using Firefox.

Are you waiting a minute or so after you boot up? I find that if I try doing things too soon after a startup (before it's done booting up) that XP really doesn't like that. Whereas OSX will eventually catch up, that really seems to screw windows up. Probably not the problem but it's just a thought.

hello tray1234. I have the same problem of yours as well. I also own a macbook 2G with 1G ram. when I switched to XP it became slow and keeps lagging every 5 or so seconds.

I do not have any antivirus software installed. and I use Firefox and hate IE more than anything else... :cool:

I'm not sure if it's the problem of the XP disc. it's a legal microsoft xp pro edition. but not with SP2. my friend copied the files from that disc and added SP2 and burnt the whole thing into one single disc so I could use it to install windows via bootcamp. im not sure how he did it coz I myself is a computer idiot...

Finally I dont feel alone. I dont think windows runs good at all on my MBP c2d 2,33 ghz, 2 gig ram.

I have reinstalled 3-4 times, always install all the bootcamp-drivers. I definitely dont have virus (always checked out the system, before going online). Windows hangs, dragging windows around stutters the system, copying a 4-5 megabyte file made the "system performance" race to a crazy 30% usage, sound stutters once in a while, and my startup-time is CRAZY SLOW (about 1min15sec - from the moment I press winxp in the bootcamp startup till winxp desktop)

I would say it is ok - but not great at all. My old 1,6 ghz acer laptop runs smother than this shjt. I have tried a zillion things, and nothing really solved the issue. (and I did purchase winXP SP2 in original packageing)

Today, just for the fun of it, I ran "performancetest 6.1" on both my old laptop and winXp running on the MBP. Thought I'd do a little battle. Of course the MBP kicked ass, EXCEPT in 2D-graphic performance - where it score something like 150, and my old acer with a 64mb ati mobility radeon 9700 scored 180. How the heck is that possible? That made me think that this could be the cause of bad GUI-performance on the MBP???

Anyway - I hope a solution is out there soon, since I am getting tired of it. I work in video-editing, and have always used AVID on a PC. I was hoping to continue this on my MBP in winXP, but since it runs so unstable, hangs too often, I dont see it happening anytime soon...:(
