Im using iTunes and my Lite-On 52x CD-RW drive to import songs. The drive speed is 52x24x52 (I believe).

Why does iTunes only import at a max of about 7.0x. Shouldnt it be going a bit faster?

Is there a different program you guys use to import music?

You could have a 1000000x CD-ROM for all I care. Your computer and your processor plays a "huge" factor in importing music times.

My iBook 466 imports at a little more than half the rate of B/s as my Cube 0.5GHz.

The Velocity Engine also plays a part in compressing your audio, as you can tell from the example.

Another factor to consider is how much you are compressing your audio. Compressions down to 192Kbps means a lesser "loss" of data than compression down to 112Kbps, so it takes less time to compress music to 192Kbps than to 112Kbps. Think of it as trying to keep a slice of paper from unfolding after several folds. The longer you work it and hold it down, the more compressed you can keep it.

A third factor to consider would be if you have third party applications running in the background, or if you are playing music simutaneously. Doing so consumes CPU power and lessens the rate of importing.

yeah, I would set them to import as 128 kb/s mp3s.

no, i think the point was that ripping to 192 is faster than 128, since it's slightly closer to it's original state.

it does kind of suck that encoding takes so long, but it's a necessary evil. it's like this on all systems.

don't feel too bad, on my 400MHz imac, it only rips at like 2.7x.

I use 192kb in iTunes , and I rip it around 10x on my iMac 700mhz G4. It sounds good and gets it done quickly

This sounds like you probably have a 667 to 800 MHz G4. It's about the right speed depending on what else you have running on the system.

At this point, the theoretical maximum CD read speed of an optical drive doesn't matter as much as a couple of factors.

The first as already mentioned is the ability of program reading from the disc to handle the data.

The second is the quality of the disc itself. Some of my very old CDs (for music CDs) only encoded at 2x or so. It depends on a lot of factors in how well the disc was made. And it depends on how well calibrated the equipment was that made the CD in question.
