Hey all
What is your definitive breakup song. If you were going through a breakup, what song would make you cry the hardest. What song would rip your heart out and make your emotions completely crash. For me its "no distance left to run" by Blur.
P.s can someone answer my other thread in this forum its killing me!

Hmmm, If you're p*ssed off about a breakup here's a good one:
Prayer to God - Shellac
To the one true God above:
here is my prayer -
not the first you've heard, but the first I wrote.
not the first, but the others were a long time ago.
There are two people here, and I want you to kill them.
Her - she can go quietly, by disease or a blow
to the base of her neck,
where her necklaces close,
where her garments come together,
where I used to lay my face...
That's where you oughta kill her,
in that particular place.
Him - just ********* kill him, I don't care if it hurts.
Yes I do, I want it to,
********* kill him but first
make him cry like a woman,
no particular woman,
let him hold out, hold back
someone or other might come and ********* kill him.
********* kill him.
Kill him already, kill him.
********* kill him, ********* kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
********* kill him, ********* kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
Just ********* kill him! ********* kill him,
********* kill him already, kill him.
Ah ********* kill him, ********* kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
Kill him already, kill him already
Kill him, ********* kill him.
Just ********* kill him, f**Kin kill him,
Kill him already, kill him.
F**Kin kill him, kill him,
********* kill him already, kill him.
Kill him, ********* kill him,
Kill him, just ********* kill him.
Kill them already, kill them already,
Kill him.
Amen.

I've been listening a lot to that lately, great song.
As for the best breakup song it would have to be Zappa...(he seems to have a song for every occassion.)

I think "The Best of Bread" has some of the sadist songs.
From what I understand, David Gates had a sad life and it is reflected in his songs. It almost hurts listening to some they are so sad.

But I just can't stand the pain

I gave you my heart
And I tried to make you happy
And you gave me nothing in return
You know it ain't so hard to say
Would you please just go away

I wouldn't want to sit around and stew in it with a slow sad song....anger works better for me in situations like that.
Therefore a nice sexist anti female song would be just right. SO, maybe a little number by Easy-E or NWA to set the mood, followed by a tall glass of refreshing whiskey.

Wierd Al's One More Minute
Well, I heard that you're leavin',
Gonna leave me far behind,
'Cause you found a brand new lover,
You decided that I'm not your kind,
So I pulled your name out of my Rolodex,
And I tore all your pictures in two,
And I burned down the malt shop where we used to go,
Just because it reminds me of you.
That's right, you ain't gonna see me cryin'.
I'm glad that you found somebody new,
'Cause I'd rather spend eternity eating shards of broken glass,
Than spend one more minute with you.
I guess I might seem kinda bitter.
You got me feelin' down in the dumps.
'Cause I'm stranded all alone in the Gas Station of Love,
And I have to use the self-service pumps!
Oh, so honey, let me help you with that suitcase.
You ain't gonna break my heart in two.
'Cause I'd rather get a hundred thousand paper cuts on my face,
Than spend one more minute with you.
I'd rather rip out my intestines with a fork,
Than watch you going out with other men.
I'd rather slam my fingers in a door,
Again and again and again and again and again.
Aw, can't you see what I'm tryin' to say, darlin'.
I'd rather have my blood sucked out by leeches,
Shove an ice pick under a toenail or two.
I'd rather clean all the bathrooms in Grand Central Station with
my tongue,
Than spend one more minute with you.
Yes, I'd rather jump naked on a huge pile of thumbtacks,
Or stick my nostrils together with Krazy Glue.
I'd rather dive into a swimming pool filled with double-edged razor
blades,
Than spend one more minute with you.
I'd rather rip my heart right out of my rib cage with my bare hands
and then throw it on the floor and stomp on it till I die...
Than spend one more minute with you.

No no no Onizuka! You should get a kick in the nuts. Not only is that a great song, it is exactly what I meant by a breakup song. A real tearjerker. Something that will really have an emotional effect on a broken heart. Not this heavy anti-women crap like nine inch nails that you and other people have been writing about. Shame on you. Never dis U2.

Acutally, your dissin' on U2. "With or Without You" isn't a breakup song. It's about having something so good, and questioning whether or not it's deserved.
I just finished "Walk On" (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0976035758/sr=8-1/qid=1150115115/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-1041946-0135320?%5Fencoding=UTF8) about the spiritual life of U2. It's as I always suspected: U2 is a Christian band. I suggest it as a great read into the minds of the band as the years go on. And, how wise they are in their song writing in conveying a message via pop culture (all the while making fun of it). :)

I don't know about breakup songs, but I sang THIS one to myself a lot. Had her, lost her, she... got... married...
Brooklyn Bridge... "It's the worst that could happen". It holds up well after all these years.

Girl, I heard you're getting married
Heard you're getting married, this time you're really sure
And this is the end, they say you really mean it
This guy's the one that makes you feel so safe, so sane and so secure
And, baby, if he loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen to me
I'll never get married
Never get married, you know that's not my scene
But a girl like you needs to be married
I've known all along you couldn't live forever in between
And, baby, if he loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen to me
And, girl, I don't really blame you for having a dream of your own
Hey, girl, I don't really blame you
A woman like you needs a house and a home, baby
If he really loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen
Oh, girl, don't wanna get married
Girl, I'm never, never gonna marry, no no
No, it's the worst that could happen
The worst that could happen
Oh, girl, the worst that could happen
And I've always liked this one:

Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Pat Benetar
Lyrics:
Well you're the real tough cookie with the long history
Of breaking little hearts, like the one in me
That's O.K., lets see how you do it
Put up your dukes, lets get down to it!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Why Don't You Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Fire Away!
You come on with a come on, you don't fight fair
But that's O.K., see if I care!
Knock me down, it's all in vain
I'll get right back on my feet again!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Why Don't You Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Fire Away!
Well you're the real tough cookie with the long history
Of breaking little hearts, like the one in me
Before I put another notch in my lipstick case
You better make sure you put me in my place
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Come On, Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Fire Away!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Why Don't You Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot!
Fire Away!

Trembling Blue Stars - Never Loved You More.
This song is the absolute worst. They've got some horrible lyrics (like..hurtful ones) but this song is the worst. It's like....if you were to hang out with that person and try to be friendly after a break up..you know..how that never works. uggh---if you want to be Effed up for a few days, pick up Trembling Blue Stars - Lips That Taste of Tears ....I don't know how this singer survived if he wrote these words about personal experience.
----
When I'm near you my heart won't be told,
It just feels what it feels, knows what it knows.
I want to do what feels right, but you're not mine to hold.
When I'm near you my heart won't be told;
Of desire and sadness, a storm inside blows.
Those lips that I lost, I want to kiss so.
I'm so far from being over you.
I'm so far from being over you.
I still just want to be yours,
I've never loved you more.
When I'm near you my heart won't be told.
It still hurts me, the life above me you chose.
I'll miss you forever, but I guess you know.

If you're doing the heart-breaking I think
The Show Must Go On by Queen is probably the best bet
If your heart has been broken and you just want to weep, there are three in my opinion
Only the Very Best - Cock Robin
Speak to me Someone - Gene
I Can't Cry Hard Enough - The Williams Brothers
And if it's your third heart-break in as many months funnily enough I think
You've Got the Music in You - The New Radicals
is the best hold on and get back on the horse song out there.

Phil Collins' old stuff used to rip my heart out. He has two albums full of breakup songs.
I wanted to post Greg Kihn's song because it was the only break up song I could think of at the moment. I love how the song is upbeat, so it's hard for me to imagine this song being a break up tune. But the lyrics define it, so yeah... I also had no idea that he had done a new version of the same song. It's not bad.

Lol. Exactly.
Sorry man, but "With or Without You" was made out to be this great/tragic love story by a show called FRIENDS, and everyone thought it was like, the GREATEST breakup song ever. BAH! Googleymoo on that!
Notice I had Al Green and Social Distortion on the list. Those songs aren't heavy at all. I could go on and on and on and on with break up songs, but those popped in my head first.

It's not fair to call it a breakup, but I had a particularly melancholy time last week when I had what I considered to be a particularly unlucky in love moment.
On my iPod on the way to work, the following tracks came on at random:
New Order - Regret
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy
Orbital - Belfast
The latter two are songs which can either make me glow, or make me feel miffed.
By the time the bus arrived, I was blubbering like a baby, and quickly snapped my way out of it with some hard trance music. :)

your time is gonna come - Led Zeppelin
against all odds - phil collins
heart of the matter - don henley

of course there are different types of break-up's, and for each different kind, there is a song that fits it. If your woman screws around on you, well, "your time is gonna come" by zeppelin is your best bet,,,,trust me. if you're really torn up about it, then listen to "lyin eyes". but i'd have to say, the best i've ever heard for a break-up is "against all odds" by phil collins.

BNL - Break Your Heart
(you absolutely must hear it sung by Steven Page to get the full effect)
The bravest thing Ive ever done
Was to run away and hide
But not this time, not this time
And the weakest thing Ive ever done
Was to stay right by your side
Just like this time, and every time
I couldnt tell you I was happy when you were gone
So I lied and said that I missed you when we were apart.
I couldnt tell you, so I had to lead you on
But I didnt mean to break your heart.
And if I always seem distracted
Like my minds somewhere else,
Thats because its true, yes its true
Its this stupid pride that makes me feel
Like I have to follow through
Even half-assedly, loving you
Why must I always speak in terms of cowardice?
When I guess I should have just come out and told you right from the start
Why must I always tell you all I want is this?
I guess cause I didnt want to break your heart
And you said;
whatd you think that I was gonna do,
Curl up and die just because of you?
Im not that weak, you know
Whatd you think that I was gonna do,
Try to make you love me as much as I love you?
How could you be so low?
You arrogant man,
What do you think that I am?
My heart will be fine
Just stop wasting my time
And now I know that you will be okay, and that i
Got what I want and thats rid of you
Good bye
And its not cause Ill be missing you
That makes me fall apart
Its just that I didnt mean to break
No I didnt mean to break
No I didnt mean to break
Your heart

Aimee Mann's "I'm with Stupid" is pretty much a complete journey through the upheaval of break-up emotions. She's an amazing lyricist. I don't know if it's been mentioned but www.lyricsfreak.com is a great source for lyrics.
ALL Over Now
Though I let you steer
You a cavalier
Inch became a lightyear
It was pathetic
Oh you can write the play
And every word I say
But I dont have to stay
To see the credits
cause its all over now
Yes its all over now
And Im free
I was one of few
Whod stick up for you
And so you never knew
You were a punch line
I could not convince or trust you
To pick up on my hints, must you
Leave your fingerprints
On everything I called mine
Well thats all over now
Yes its all over now
And Im free
Yes Im free
From your interference
Which had the appearance
Of making it clear that
Its got nothing to do with me
-guitar solos-
Its got nothing to do with me
Its got nothing to do with me
Its got nothing to do with me
-fuzztortion solo-
And I warn you now
The velocity Im gathering

This one is my all time holy moly favourite song ever in the whole wide world.
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
Wish you were here, by Pink Floyd
got me through a rough patch or two, but it's a little after the event i listen to that. the immediate tracks are usually loud and shouty, like Rage Against the Machine and Metallica, but this one's good too:
A restless eye across a weary room
A glazed look and I was on the road to ruin
The music played and played as we whirled without end
No hint, no word her honour to defend
I will, I will she sighed to my request
And then she tossed her mane while my resolve was put to the test
Then drowned in desire, our souls on fire
I lead the way to the funeral pyre
And without a thought of the consequence
I gave in to my decadence
One slip, and down the hole we fall
It seems to take no time at all
A momentary lapse of reason
That binds a life for life
A small regret, you won't forget,
There'll be no sleep in here tonight
Was it love, or was it the idea of being in love?
Or was it the hand of fate, that seemed to fit just like a glove?
The moment slipped by and soon the seeds were sown
The year grew late and neither one wanted to remain alone
One slip, and down the hole we fall
It seems to take no time at all
A momentary lapse of reason
That binds a life to a life
A small regret, you will never forget,
There'll be no sleep in here tonight
One Slip - Pink Floyd (yup, again)

Wierd Al's One More Minute
Classic! But I was thinking You Don't Love Me Anymore by Wierd Al.
I noticed a complete lack of Country here, but maybe that would be too easy!
Two that jump out a me are...and I don't even listen to Country...
