I now own a MacBook, so here's the question.
I know that now you are allowed to upgrade the ram on your own, but what about the hard drive. If it is of the brand or approved by apple, will replacing a hard drive void the warranty.

Apple will not warranty the 3rd party HD or the RAM, if you sell the HD and RAM and send it to Apple for repair -- they will charge you for putting in a new HD or RAM, if they are found to be the problem.
Apple has manual on their site showing you how to do both, so it's likely a DIY upgrade.
Edit: aka, will not void the warranty -- since you can always put the Apple drives and RAM back in.

I do not believe it does. However, if you break something while the computer is open, that will not be covered.
