I've been experiencing some strange OS/App behavior so I repaired permissions and verified the HD. The HD verify app failed after giving the following report, so I was not able to make the repair.

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.

Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

What is my best next step to joy?

This has happened to me on multiple occasions.

Boot up from your Tiger Install DVD (hold the C key while starting up).
After it has loaded, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Run a "Disk Repair" rather than verify.
After it's done I usually like to verify it one more time, just in case.

Good luck.

You could also try booting in single user mode (boot with <COMMAND> <S> pressed, until you a unix-prompt.

Then type fsck -fy <ENTER>

Hope it can fix it.

If not utilz like DiskWarrior (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19441) can help you out.

If the disk is accessible, first back up your data.

Would this create a problem where a user logs in and gets booted back onto the sign on screen?

I did a repair on the disk, but the system would not let him back on, any clues?
