Post here if you got it!

I got mine in last night, and boy is it great. It's my first DS and I'm really enjoying it. I'm amazed on how bright it is, almost seems brighter than my old psp (sold it). I can't compare it the old DS, cuz i as i stated this is my first one. Here are some pics i took with photobooth so you can get an idea. also does any1 kno of any type of decent looking carrying case?? and also any type of screen protector for the bottom half?

Here are some pics so you guys can get an idea of the dimensions.

Knowing Nintendo, they will probably come out with some new colors in a few months, so everybody will have to buy new DSs again! :p However, the new colors will most likely be Puke Green™ and Hott Pink™. :D

ok, I got it. I couldn't wait until morning and buy it at work (Toys R US) so I went to Wally World and got one. I got Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart. Metroid and Tetris to follow along with others.

So question, must my better finish charging the first time before I start playing it?

I'm going out today to get one. I have a $40 gift card to Bestbuy, so that will bring the price down below $100. I am going to pick up Super Mario Bros. as well, should be a good game to start my DS experience.

I had a PSP for over a year, but I really have to force myself to play it. Most of the games just didn't capture me. My girlfriend has a GBA SP and I play that a lot. The games are simple and just the way the I want them to be on a portable system.

But um, how much would it cost for you to ship one to a friend in U.S.? Also, how much does the unit cost in U.S. dollars for you guys? $160?

If it ends up being a lot more than the white DS here, I suppose I'll just wait...

Just picked mine up from my local Target. It's unbelievable how good it looks. Very Applesque. The screen is freakishly bright and colorful. I turned on my DS Fat to transfer the wireless settings, and it seemed absolutely dingy by comparison. The new stylus is FAR more comfortable, too. My only concern right now is how Metroid will play without the thumbstrap. I guess I'll find out. :)

There's no thumbstrap!?

HAHAHA! I knew they'd do something stupid! I knew it! There's always a catch with Nintendo. They always give features while they take away others.

First, the GBA cart sticking out, now this!?

That makes Metroid completely unplayable for me now. F that.

There's no way to even attach the old thumbstrap to the new system? No way at all?!

He's right. It has a little loop-through area to attach the thumbstrap. I just think the black strap with the white DS would be tacky, so I was going to see if I could live without it. I really can't find anything to complain about with this machine.

Just got mines. The screen is really really bright! The thing is, I am still a bit disappointed in 2 things:

First, I remember back when the DS Lite first appeared in Japan, someone noted that one of the many improvements was that the bottom screen (the touch one) no longer had that "Wet" or "sparkly" look like with the original DS. Unfortunatly, my DS lite still has that look, making the top screen look far, far sharper, and the bottom one a bit muddy. Can anyone else confirm this?

Also, I really don't like the new power and volume buttons. They look (intentionally) loose, so if you shake the DS around, they kind of rattle. Gives a slightly cheap impression.

Other than that, its a huge improvement over the original. I was surprised with just how small it is.

bluemouse
Jun 11, 2006, 02:09 PM
I was just thinking that I was glad they had eliminated that flaw with the bottom screen. I really don't see it on mine. Probably just different levels of sensitivity to such things.
Yes, the buttons do rattle slightly, but not enough to trouble me. And I think the overall solid feeling of the Lite offsets any cheapness it might convey. But again, different sensitivities...

This is my first GameBoy since the original black and white and this is awesome, very Apple like in design. I can't find anything wrong with mine, the colors just jump out on the bright screens.

I bought New Super Mario and Brain Age and both are a lot of fun. And the fact that it plays all of my girlfriends Advanced games is a plus.

The wife just got one today. We were in EB games and she saw one hooked up with the Mario demo on it and she just stood there for 10 minutes and played all the way through it. Once done, she decided she wanted to have one, and that was that! We did some sniffing around...had a hard time at Circuit City, couldn't find it at one Best Buy, but then finally found it at another. Got it with Brain Age and the new Super Mario Bros. She is at the grocery store and hasn't gotten a chance to play it yet, and I don't want to play it first, so for now it is charging on the mantle.

We didn't even know anything about the DS Lite or when it was coming out, so it was completely by coincidence. :)

I got mine today and have played Mario non-stop (well that is an exageration, but you know what I mean)...I love the design, especially the small size and the bright screen. One issue I have is a stuck pixel while playing NSMB. Does anybody know how to unstick it? It's on the bottom/touch screen...

Finally got my DS lite today and the design is beautiful , it looks like a Mini iBook/MacBook when closed and just as tough. The screens are brighter then the PSP and don't seem to have any ghosting. I just wish Nintendo do would have atleast gone atleast 320x240 on the top screen. would have been perfect to run old Sega Genisis , SNES maybe even Neo-Geo games.

I sold my PSP yesterday so I could buy a DS Lite today , I had my PSP for about 6 months and it collected dust for about 5 , the games on PSP suck and thanks to the Proprietary crap like MS DUO , UMD the Mulitmedia stuff is crippled. Plus battery life is too short , console itself is too friagile.

Seems these things are seelling like crazy , good thing i pre-ordered on friday . they are all out of non pre-order DS Lites at GameStop(8th st. manhattan store). I also bought New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart. Both are great.

What game do you guys recommend? (I dont like guns, but like rpgs.) I'm getting a ds lite as soon as they are back in stock :D

Well, if you like puzzles I recommend Tetris DS, Magnetica (Meteos isn't too bad either). Animal Crossing: Wild World is.... hard to describe. Metroid Pinball is fun too, if you like pinball games.

Oh, I have Electroplankton for sale if anyone's interested. Sort of a weird flash-like audio/music demo... or something.

When I saw the original version, I thought, "I'll never get one." Now since the Lite came out, I want one. Think I can convince my mom to go half and half on one since she's addicted to Tetris? When we had our old NES, we had like nightly games of Tetris 2 between my mom, dad, sister, and me. I want to do it this way so I can buy Mario Kart DS, Super Mario Bros. Anybody like Mario Kart? Is it similar to the Gamecube version? Thanks!

question, what game do you guys recommend? (I dont like guns, but like rpgs.)Try these:
- Lost Magic

M&L2 basically gets stellar reviews across the board, but the rest seem to be hit-or-miss, depending on the reviewer.

all this excitement for DS Lite has got me rehooked on certain DS games on the DS fat.

I bought mine yesterday, and I've got to say... I've owned a lot of handhelds thru the years, and the DS lite easily bests them all. The screen is phenomenal... it's brighter than my computer monitor!

I almost bought a PSP, but the high price ($200 for the hardware, $50 for the games), and the lack of interesting software convinced me to buy the DS instead.

Thus far, I'm happy with my decision! :)

As for recommended RPGs, I'm currently playing Riviera. It's a GBA game, but it looks (and sounds) great on the DS. It's quite different as RPGs go, so if you want something more traditional you might want to look into Final Fantasy 4.

Other games I've purchased include: Metroid Pinball (best pinball game since Alien Crush on the TurboGrafx), Trace Memory (cool anime adventure game that makes good use of both screens), Nanostray (3-D shooter with great graphics), Meteos (highly rated puzzler, my most wanted game... hopefully it will arrive today), Pac Pix (I've never been a fan of pac-man, but this looks interesting), and finally, Polarium (another puzzle game).

The best thing is, I bought most of these used for around $12 each!

What are friend codes?Friend codes are "addresses" assigned to every player that uses Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The codes are usually assigned one per player, per game; the codes allow a player to store a list of friends with the same game and play with them when both parties are online.

Oh man I can't wait for mine to come. This is my first portable game system since Gameboy Color, which totally ruled. I ordered the white. I've really fallen victim to the classic elegant white apple uses on their products. Games I'm probably gonna buy are:

New Mario Bros
Mario and Luigi Partners in Time
Mario Kart
Mario 64 DS
Advance Wars
Animal Crossing (Maybe) sounds lame but I here good things and I like The Sims and online games with chat. Might be worth a try hmmmmm....

I'm no Mario fanboy just to put it straight. The last mario game I had was Mario N64 which I don't have anymore. Why did I sell it?

Any other reccommendations?. I like RPGs/Platforms/Simulation games. I do like sport games but I haven't seen any that really stand out yet.

Any of your whites ones scratched yet?

Mario & Luigi is a good RPG, but you've already got it on your list. A lot of the good RPGs are still on the way; Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Xenosaga, Baten Kaitos, Fresh Tingle's Rose Colored Rupee Land (yes, the Tingle RPG. Run.), etc, etc. There's already some RPGs out for the sysmte but I haven't played any of them other than M&L.

Also, Mario 3-on-3 Basketball is a sports game being developed by Square Enix. You might like that.

There's a plane simulator I tried at E3 on the way, I believe Natsume is the developer. They were cool people.

MegaMan ZX looks like it will be the best 2D platformer of 2006. I can not wait for that game. Try the MegaMan Zero series on GBA to get a taste of it.

If you like tactical/simulation games, wait for Star Trek: Tactical Assault. I've already pre-ordered it. September. It's a sequel to the Starfleet Command series on the PC, a highly tactical Star Trek spaceship simulator. It has a Federation and Klingon campaign with 30 missions each (IIRC on the each, I'll have to ask my contacts at Quicksilver/Bethesda on that one). I met the senior producer and creative director of that game and played it and I'm dying for it. They've estimated a 20-30 hour long single player game, I hope it lasts that long :) and your crew levels up from experience, much like an RPG. Highly tactical game if its anything like the original. Just wish it had the online play :(

Got mine Sunday morning along with Big Brain Academy. Never owned a DS before but I've always been a big Gameboy fan so I've been excited for this. The system is great, I love the touch screen. However screen is so bright, in fact too bright! I had to dim it a little. The speakers are excellent compared to the GBASP too. And it plays my old GBA flash card with PocketNES too!

My only complaints are that the action buttons are too high up on the console, and the unit seems a little flimsy. Easy to scratch or break, but hopefully I'll be proven wrong. I just feel the need to buy a good case for this thing.

...Xenosaga...

This alone can surpress the temptations to get a PS2... which I primarily wanted for Xenosaga anyway! I know the games will be translated differently, lost the CGI, go to 2D characters, etc... but I almost think I will like that better (makes me recall Xenogears, best RPG I have ever played!)

Thanks to a nice $70 trade-in value on the old DS plus selling some old DVDs, I managed to upgrade from old DS to DS lite for nothing. And what a difference. Not only is the industrial design 100x better (actually looks classy now), but the new backlights make all my old games look like they've been upgraded. The sharpness! The colors! If you have an old DS, you must upgrade. There's just no comparison.

Can anyone tell me how GBA games play on the DS Lite vs GBA SP?

I'm wonder if they play as well (comfort) and if the screen is better then the SP screen for GBA games.

Thanks!

(Would actually be nice to see comparison picks of SP vs Lite! :D)

Yes, it's better than the SP. GBA games look great, and you can choose which of the two screens to play them on.

If you haven't already done so, you should check out the movies (3 total) on the following site:
http://www.cabel.name/2006/03/nintendo-ds-lite-first-look.html

He goes over all the features of the DS lite and compares the screen to the original DS, PSP, and Micro.

My inner geek says that picture is totally hot.

Did you have the GBA SP with the older screen or the brighter screen?

Coming from someone who just had the older screen version of the SP the difference between the SP and DS Lite is night and day. I just tested a handful of DS games and it's amazing how better they look. Here are some notes:

- You can choose which screen you want the game on
- The DS Lite to me is easier to hold than the cramping GBASP
- The DS lite screen on the brightest setting is so vibrant that to me looked like the color bleeds a little. I toned it down a notch and it looks better.
- The DS lite screen viewing angle is much better than the SP.
- The GBA games on the DS are not full screen. There's maybe 1/8" black space on all sides off the screen. But because of the bigger DS screen it's about the same size as the GBASP.
- I haven't tested multiplayer yet
- Works with GBA flashcarts
- DS Lite does not play original GB games, the SP does.
- The GBASP is smaller and thus more portable

As much as I liked the GBA and the GBASP, I don't know if I could go back to playing with it the DS Lite is just that much better.

I didn't think it would sell out, the US market is very different than the Japanese one. Plus it's not a true new system release, just an upgrade which usually doesn't create a craze around here.

Wait till Xmas time, you probably won't be able to get your hands on one.

The original GBA had a slow system launch, but became harder to get as the buzz got out.

By using a PassMe 2 or installing a firmware hack, you can trick the DS (or DS Lite) into booting DS homebrew off a GBA flash cart. I do it all the time. :) DSLinux makes nerds gasp.

HAHAHAH! My girlfriend was playing the demo of Brain Age I got from Target for a lonnnng time...I had to pull a "did you buy this?" to get it back. ;)

I picked up Mario Kart DS today and I must say it's very impressive for a handheld game. I've seen the PSP in action, but for the size of this thing it just blows me away. My friends code is: 249-180 / 511-985, so maybe some of you will be on :D Now Nintendo just needs gamerscores, global friends lists and WPA compatibility.

And because everybody likes pictures...

I finally got my DS Lite back from my wife.

We could only afford one game apiece (since we shelled out the for aluminum mini-briefcase and accessories) so I got New Super Mario Bros. Honestly, while I may die every now and then, the next time through I can figure out how to beat the level, and 1-UPs are too easy.

But, it's not like this is the only game for the DS.

I would like Superman Returns, MarioKart, Trauma Center, Metroid, Star Trek.

But the wife wants a Nintendog ... I'll never see the DS again.

So, what makes the PSP so great then? If you have an opposite point of view, surely you should be able to prove me wrong...

You have a pretty good list here, a few repeats here and there (like "- big screen / - widescreen (good for movies)" for PSP ;) ) You do seem to have forgotten one of the best aspects of the DS as a portable though, which is the clamshell design. It completely eliminates the need for 3rd party screen protectors, cases, etc.

I would really love an analog stick, but I'm assuming the DS 2 (or whatever is next) will have it. In the meantime I am loving this thing :D sooooooo svelte.

Screen protectors are still useful for the touch screen, especially if you allow younger kids to play on the system once in a while (who are likely to scratch the screen).

The DS already has an "analog stick": the touch-screen. An analog stick is a poor attempt at adding a mouse-style control to a gamepad. The touch-screen, in some cases, is better than a mouse.

As for Nintendo adding an analog stick to a "DS2", forget it. That would break compatibility with the old models. If there's ever such a thing, it won't be a "DS" nor a "GBA", it'll be a whole new system. And seeing as where Nintendo are going with the DS and the Wii, I'd forget analog sticks altogether.

I believe the Wii actually comes with an analog stick... it's on the nunchuck controller.

But I must say I wasn't too impressed with the analog "nub" on the PSP.

I feel your pain. I remember when the 32 bit consoles first came out, and we had a 3 way war... Sony vs Sega vs Nintendo. I owned them all of course, and tried to defend them against the haters and trolls for a while, but eventually you just have to give up.

I've got to say though, as fanboys go, the Sony ones have become the most irritating and irrational of the lot. Perhaps all those annoying 3DOers switched to Sony after the M2 failed to materialize! :)

Maybe we'll see an analog stick on a portable Nintendo system if they ever make a portable Gamecube.

I agree. If anything the DS2 will have some sort of gyroscopic-motion-sensing feature. Allows for better integration with the Wii and you can get some great "retro" games like Labyrinth. :)

But I honestly love the DS the way it is now. I am sold on the touch screen.

I'm planning on getting a DS Lite, probably two (one for the wife) once I wrap up a project I've been working on in a few weeks.

We'll probably get two systems as well as Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros... maybe even Tetris.

If you want a good comparison between the DS and the DS Lite... The DS feels and looks like a Fisher-Price... tough, but with a toy look to it.

The DS Lite, strangely, feels more sturdy to me. It's almost like a small solid white brick. And that Apple-like look with the gloss plastic over the white plastic. Couldn't resist. :D

Difference between Tetris DS multi-cart vs single-cart... Don't know. I could test the single cart with my two DS'es but I wouldn't have any reference to compare it to. If I were you I'd start with single cart.

I've been playing mine for a few days...

Gotta say, I love it.

I have been playing GBA games on my first gen GBA and after popping them into the DS lite and seeing those colors just blast though the room...I couldn't go back to the older portable. For instance, I never knew that Sonic's force field was green in Sonic Advance. I thought there was an imcompatibility issue until I played it on my GBA and saw that it was indeed a green-ish color.

Complaints: the start and select buttons seem a tad bit small and require a tad bit of force to press them down.

Can't wait to get more games!

DS lite owners - I hereby give you the (arguably ;)) holy trinity of ~import DS games. Each and every one of these games I endorse wholeheartedly (which of course means nothing in real terms).

In no particular order;

Ouendan.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (or Gyakuten Saiban)

Trauma Centre: Under the Knife.

That's why I snuck that little '~' symbol in there Haoshiro ;). If you're in Australia at the moment you need to get them all on import :(. If you're in an asia you don't need to import them at all :D. The US and UK is currently in the middle :p.

Games like this are the icing on the DS cake for me. They are nice and different in style and gameplay and complement the Ninty franchises beautifully. I find demonstrating them usually gets a wow from the average non-gamer as well....

p.s. I confess I've lied a little. My version of trauma centre is winging it's way to me from lik-sang as I write this (have played a friend's though) and I've only just begun Phoenix Wright. Ouendan is my bread and butter however :D. It's a great game.
