I didn't see another post about this when I searched (which means there will be a duplicate thread on this very subject), but I just got back from Cars, and after having some reservations....
The movie was absolutely brilliant...perhaps one of Pixar's best.

I really liked this movie. Not only was the quality of the animation superb, but the physics are incredibly realistic, and the story of how American life is being hurt by "life in the fast lane" (i.e., little towns that once thrived are now dying) was charming.

Also, this one was written and directed by Lasseter.
The animation was, at points, just stunning - so realistic.

I was a little skeptical about going to see this movie, but I think I will go to see it tomorrow with a friend.
One Question.
Because I'm a "Lemming", does this mean I have to have an already amazing review of it even if it is horrible, being that Steve Jobs is the CEO?:p

What I need to know is this - Lori and I see one movie in the theater per year. Is Cars definitive enough to burn that viewing now? Last year we messed up and saw Star Wars instead of Batman, and I don't want to get burned again. FWIW, we do own the Pixar Collection.

Sounds like a plan. It has to be late on Saturday or anytime on Sunday of the opening weekend.
Maybe a MR movie day is in order for Rob to see that we all are real. :)

I too was surprised at the lack of a thread on this when I checked earlier. Took the family to see it at an early show this AM, and I wholeheartedly agree with all the positive reviews. The only thing I'll add now, is stay through the end of the credits! some of the material there is worthe the whole price of admission!

Why not just go to two movies? Why stop there...maybe even be crazy and see three. If you want to see a movie why not spend the $8-$10 to see it?

It was good. The animation was stunning. I cried (altho that's not unusual), but, the best? not sure about that. It's a good story, but pretty mono-dimensional. I know that's kind of what you expect in a kids movie, but Pixar had already raised the bar on that so high I kind of expected more.
Madagascar was good but also not great for the same reason I thought. (vv .. and I know it's not a Pixar movie, and i enjoyed it also, but it wasn't "great", because it's plot, although lovely, wasn't as nuanced, layered or stirring as a great film's should be, like many Pixar films have been, but not to my mind Cars. Cool, good, enjoyable, funny, in parts stunning, not truly great)
The Incredibles is still their best yet for me.

^^Madagascar isn't a Pixar movie...

See 2 movies. If you want to see 2 movies, and money isn't an issue, then go out and see the 2 movies you want to see. You don't have to stand by this arbitrary rule you made up just to prove something to yourself. See Cars and Superman if you want.

Pixar had already raised the bar on that so high I kind of expected more.
Each of the Pixar movies has it's own charm and has raised the bar yet again. So it's hard to rank them, but here's a rough standing of where I would place Cars.
"Toy Story 2", "The Incredibles", "Cars", "Finding Nemo", "Toy Story", "Monster's Inc.", "A Bug's Life"
IMHO the first four are in a class by themselves, while the rest have been equalled by the likes of "Shrek" and "Madagascar". Having seen "Over the Hedge" recently it's far more mono-dimensional than "Cars".

I saw cars and it was a great movie. My biggest problem with it was it seemed like a retread of "Doc Hollywood"
Paul Newman was perfect as Doc. Not just the voice and the acting ability but also that he raced NASCAR a couple of seasons. (My wife saw him run at the Glen)
Larry the Cable Guy was hilarious. Most of the supporting cast was great.
The outtakes at the end when they are at the drive in are incredible.

I dunno, seems like one of those "A Bug's Life/Antz" "Nemo/shark Tale" "Madagascar/The Wild" things. Another movie about a junk-food eating bear so soon after "Over the Hedge"?!? (yes, we'll probably go see if if the reviews don't stink.)

Glad to hear the positive reviews. I was a little worried about this one because when The Incredibles came out I was absolutely pumped to see it. I could not wait. Now with Cars I am not feeling that level of anticipation about it. I want to see it, but I just don't have that same level of excitement. The positive reviews here make me want to go see it more. I'll probably take my kids to it this weekend.

Nbs2 and I don't have a set number of movies we go to every year. Last year, we actually went to see four in the theater. I think he forgot about seeing Harry Potter, King Kong (India--so uber cheap) and Shikhar, a Bollywood film (also in India). :D We just don't go very often because we often find that the movies aren't worth the $20 for us to see it in the theaters here in the States--we would have been better off just Netflixing them.
In any case, I think basically what he was asking was whether it was worth it to see this in the theater or is it one that can wait for DVD? If we do see it I've asked to go see it on my b-day in a couple of weeks. :D
And for all those Incredibles comments... I just have to say my favorite conversation in that movie is the one that begins with "Honey... Where is my super suit??" :D :D :D

It certainly helped dispel my initial reaction of "a movie about rats!?!" Looks promising.
Florifee and nbs2, some of the visuals are absolutely stunning, both in Cars and "One Man Band" which precedes it. Well worth seeing on a big screen. Heck if an IMAX version was available I'd consider that. (That and I'm sure I'll be treated to watching the DVD over and over again when its out, so I won't get to enjoy it as much.) If you're looking to save $, consider pre-buying tickets from Costco (or some other source) so you can go to the movies at night at matinee prices and save 25-30%.

Saw it opening day with my 3 yo son. Cant say I loved it but it was created with the same excellent quality you can expect from a pixar movie. Not Pixars best but not its worst either. My son wanted to leave 30 minutes before the ending so I will have to wait till the dvd to see what happens and the end credits.
I did my best to spot the "Pizza Planet truck" but with 2000 vehicles on the screen at one time this may prove to be the most difficult yet (still have yet to see any evidence at all that the truck was in the Incredibles at all...).
Loved the two frames that fly by with the birds from the short "for the birds" and a quick squeek.
Really liked how the bugs in the movie are teenie tiny Volkswagon beetles.
The remake of "Life is a Highway" is just horrible. Why fix whats not broken?
There is also a referance to James Dean and the silver Porsche he was killed in.

We've got even better... I got two movie passes from a friend last year for my b-day. We were going to use them to see Harry Potter originally, but then we found out that we have to wait two weeks from opening day to use the passes (we were already at the theater when we found that out). Blech. So we still have them and we've been looking for a movie that is worthy enough to use them on. The bonus of Cars is that the 14 day limitation will end on my birthday. :)

My 3 year old did too, so mom took him to the concession stand, but my 5y ear old made it through the whole thing. 2 hours is long for the little ones.
I missed the birds where were they? Lots of other tie-ins to other bits of Pixar world. Lightyear tires, Dinoco gasoline, ...
florifee, free is definitely better than "cheap" (if paying $7/pp for a bargain matinee can be considered cheap :( )

It was there. I saw it about 5 minutes after I remembered that it would probably be somewhere in the film. LOCATION SPOILER IN WHITE. SO DON'T QUOTE IT.
(if I remember correctly) It was on the main stage with the commentators in the pre-race for the final race.
EDIT: Did anyone see the birds on the telephone line; alluding to the Pixar short. I caught it, even though it was only a split-second. I laughed really hard, but no one else in the theater got it.
EDIT: It pays to read the posts. ***Shrinks back into the hole***

In the beginning of the film when he (Lightning) sets out across the country and they are showing the landscape pass by you will see about two frames of the birds sitting on a phone wire whiz by along with a familiar squeek. If you blinked you missed it. Those who actually caught it did so by accident, it was that quick.

Just got back from seeing 'Cars' with my eleven year old. I thought it was great! Pixar is so in touch with the children *and* the adults that are watching. One scene the main character Lightning McQueen was taking care of his sponsor before a race and there were a bunch of rusty old cars gathering around, very excited to meet the famous race car. It was almost like a rock concert. One of the cars in the background yelled "Freebird!" :p
Everything was just as you would expect it should be - even his agent was the voice of the agent in Entourage, and of course the Ferrari was Michael Schumacher. Lasseter is a genius :)

Just got back from seeing it, too. I thought it was excellent. Lots of funny lines. My son and I cracked up on the "Freebird" line, too. Another one, "I'm as happy as a tornado in a trailer park" got us going. As I'd mentioned earlier, I was leery because of all the year long hype, but it did not disappoint. Pixar's putting out some amazing stuff.

Pixar movies hit it on the mark IMO. So many lines that one can miss, so you either go a second time - or you wait till the DVD hits. But none of the lines missed makes the film loose out. :)

Ratatouille looks great too, after seeing the trailer. Amazing how CG has come along in such a short time. Thought in the first few seconds that it was a claymation type film (mixing real world with animation) - then the hand came in, and knew better.

When was this?
As you may or not know, James Dean was killed in 1955 while driving his tiny silver Porche 550 Spyder. the accident happend when an oncomming driver, blinded by the California sun reflecting off the glossy silver paint of Deans car crashed into him almost head on at full speed while trying to veer across traffic to a fork in the road.
There is a quick scene near the beginning of the movie where there is a character that is a silver Porche 550 Spyder. A few cars surrounding him shade their eyes from the glare of the sun reflecting off the paint.

i was another one of those people with not the biggest of expectations for the movie, despite being a huge owen wilson fan. i just didn't think it looked like it could sustain for a full movie of fast car races, and for whatever reason, owen wilson's voice didn't seem like it'd be that special. saw the movie this past saturday and realized i was definitely wrong. owen's awesome laid back style still came through in his voice, as always. dumb of me to not expect that. also thought that it was great visually, pretty good story, and definitely funny and entertaining.
i am not sure how i would rate all the pixar movies, but this one would certainly be pretty high up there.

I love it. I saw it on friday night at the drive in. It has to be one of my favorit pixar movies.
So right now it is bettween Incredibles and cars for me. More leaning on Incredidibles still by my favorit one by them. I like Nemo and monster. But I never really got into the TOy stories or bugs life. I like them but they just are not ones I really love.
Cars and Incredibibles I love and loved. Plan on buy cars the day it goes to DVD.

I think the boys and I blasted right past it when we went through Palm Springs on our way to the Grand Canyon from So Cal. I saw it yesterday, and though it wasn't phenomenal, it's one of the best movies I've seen in recent times. Though coming from what we saw in the first trailer last year, it was much better than expected.
I'm still going to say Finding Nemo is my favorite Pixar film. None of the others have as many memorable lines and moments, though Cars did have a surprising number of allusions throughout.
I especially loved the little tribute to John Ratzenberger (Hamm, P.T. Flea, Yeti, Fish School, Underminer, and now Mack) who has played a voice role in every Pixar film so far.

I rained like the Dickens out here on Saturday, so we loaded the grandparents and little one out to the movies. It was my son's first movie theater movie, he's 3 by the way. Aside from the potty breaks, he was entranced. I glanced over at him a few times, and he was watching the movie intently. Yay! I loved the animation, although the ending did not feel very original (aside from the fact that it was talking cars). Still, it was a good movie overall. I would rank it below The Incredibles.

What really gets me is that there are a number of reviews out there that didn't like the movie. I'm thinking that these people are panning the film just because it is a Pixar movie....bleh.
Our neighbor was taking her 8 y.o. to see it this passed weekend, so my son and I went and saw it again. He's only 2 1/2 and he's now quoting the movie after just seeing it twice when he plays with a couple of the matchbox cars I manage to get before they sold out :D
