So my friend got a new Dell the past week and is bragging how his computer is better than my iBook, blah blah blah. He said he's going to have me over at his house one day to show me "how much better Dell is." I know all I have to say is, "Look. No viruses or spyware. Nothing running in the background," But I want something to just like stun him to death. Here's what his specs are, copied and pasted straight:
T2400 - 2.00gHz processor (dual)
100GB - Hard Drive
1GB - Memory
256MB ATI mobility radeon X 1400 Hypermemory - video card (i don't know what the heck some of that means but i think that it is really good!
He paid $2400 for it. I have a stock iBook G4, 512MB, 40GB, 1.33GHz. Any like, amazing programs I could show him and have him bow down?
Thanks guys. Look forward to seeing the look of defeat on his face. :D

While your iBook won't hold a torch to that Dell, the $2499 MacBook Pro is a better system than his Dell for only slightly more.

Spec wise his is better
user friendlyness and general goodness the iBook is better
one suggestion would be to go to adult enterntainment sites and see who can download and play the movie clips the fastest with out getting a virus and tons of pop up and spyware...
Photoshop could work too...
oh rip a cd in itunes...

Ah that's cute. A geek battle-off ;)For some reason the vision of a group of geeks in D&D garb, throwing balls at each other and yelling "Fireball ... fireball" keeps flashing by. :o

I have never played D&D, just so you know.
Well, he has me defeated in specs. I knew that from the beginning. Never mind.

Um... the Dell'll do that too.
zflauaus: the Dell will blow your iBook away. Sorry, but it will not even be close. Of course, he's comparing a computer that cost well over twice as much, with twice the RAM, etc. But, still, there will be no close calls. He will win decidedly.
OS X rules, of course, but not in any way he'll accept.
However, I'd pit my MBP against his Dell any day.

Yeah I know. Let's just say this is over and call it a day.

Yeah, that's a fair comparison
A ~$1,000 computer vs. a ~$2,400 computer. Not even in the same ballpark.

Well, as mentioned, it's hardly a fair fight.
However, if he wants to pit XP vs Tiger, we can provide tips.

I like the virus/spyware idea.
But just for kicks, both of you could try opening all the programs on your computer at once and see whose computer recovers better afterwards.

I'd go with the guy who suggested pron (or pr0n if you are REALLY cool).
He totally beats you (pwn3z?) you in terms of specs, but go surf the same sketchy adult websites and watch his brand new baby crash and burn. Oh, and use safari and force him to use I.E (default browsers to be fair!). In the best case scenario he won't even try because he is so scared of viruses. That would show him...

OH! That's what I meant to say at the beginning. I knew his machine would spank mine performance wise, but let's do an OS battle. I already know I should show him Dashboard, Expose. Any other tips? Send them!

Connect both computers up to the internet and remove all firewalls, virus barriers and other protections. Let them sit overnight.
Check them in the morning.

Stomp your foot on his Dell a few times and then show him all the porn you can download on your ibook without viruses. I'll bet you win!!!

But then again, even the guy that comes in 2nd place in the Indy 500 is still a loser.

Are you kidding me? At 14 I'd be agreeing to see porn before the word "porn" had even finished being said.
Firewalls and anti-virus off - on routers too. Default browsers on. Connect to internet. Wait for an hour or two and then see who's is still in control.

Open a web page and make a PDF.
Grab a song from iTunes, take a few pics from iPhoto, add a short movie, put it all in iDVD and make a DVD show.
Add a network printer. It will take you 2 seconds, he may NEVER get it to work.
Boot from a Firewire drive.
Put in a blank CD, drag a file to it, eject to make the CD.
Make a file. Name it something common like "file". Have each other hide it on the other's computer. Find yours using spotlight.
Show him he will NEED a fast computer to even come CLOSE to your productivity.

Hey, you didn't see the last post on the first page.;)
This would be good to figure out. And to celebrian23, it's just to show off, like he's trying to show off his freakin' expensive Dell.

First suggestion: Very good idea.
Second suggestion: I deleted iDVD. :( iMovie HD. Ooh. Just had a thought. Make a short movie, in 720p. :D
Third: His printer isn't even networked:
Fourth: Don't have iPod as backup OS X. But I can say, hey my hard drive failed, but look, I can still boot! HA!
He can't do as much as OS X with that 5 year old Windows XP "technology."
Thanks guys. Keep sending them in.

I like the virus/spyware idea.
That gave me the following idea:
1. Download a nasty virus, trojan and worm.
2. Put on thumb drive
3. Load and attempt to launch on iBook.
4. Load and attempt to launch on Dell laptop.
Watch him die a slow death while watching his Dell do the same! :D

What a good way to get rid of the Dell! I should do that to my parent's Dell. My mom would like me once they got a new Mac, but I want college paid for, so in a few years...

That's sad that you have to get your mom a Mac in order for her to like you. I just don't know about parents these days... You can't buy love, man. :D

Comment on the differences of the ages of the machines, humbly shrug and stat "well, I don't know how good a test this'll be with how old my machine is". Then proceed...
Both of you could try these in parallel, with stopwatches:
1. Download and install oh, say Firefox...
Stop watch after default page load after initial launch
2. Close your machines, wait for sleep lights, start watches, open them again, launch Firefox...
Stop watch when Stopwatch after default page after initial launch
3. Start playing DVD (do not hit pause), close your machines, wait for sleep lights, start watches, open them again...
Stop watch when DVD plays again.
4. Uninstall Firefox
Stop watch at completion of uninstall (you'll kill him here)
Remind him or the age, and therefore spec disparity. :D
