Advice: need a lovely front end with a nice...back end too

I have grand plans but no real discipline to execute them. Arg. I really love the idea of a blog to get my thoughts together, post pics, links etc - like every other blog on the net. What's the best way to start? I want to make my own - I know HTML relatively well and the odd bits of SQL but really need some advice as where to start. I was considering this, but this seems quite limited and it's three years old:

So yeah, any advice to tutorials etc would be much appreciated.

I learnt the basics of PHP from that tutorial. I would work your way through there, very useful. It tells you how to do everything you need to for a very basic blog site.

Don't have to reinvent the wheel. There are plenty of blog software available (www.wordpress.org) that you can customize to your needs.
