arg damn parents

well I was gona buy a macbook but now my parents wont let me. The problem I have is even though I have the money to buy one I dont have the credit car so I would have to use theres in order to order one. They want me to convince them a good reason for me needing a new computer.

I told them that I need it for college next semister but that didnt seem to do any good. They seem to think my curent desktop pc is good enough.

Its a custom built system:
amd athlon 2100+ palomino
768mb DDR PC 2110
160gb segate IDE Hard Drive
Asus A7N8X2.0 nforce2 mobo
Ati Rage fury pro 23meg AGP
Windows XP
also has a nice short in it that causes it to reboot spontaniously lol.

Any sugestions on what I can tell them the reason for needing a new comp? and on that note gtg for a bit

I guess it depends on what its needed for. Word? No problem, CAD, Photoshop, etc., no dice.

Yes, be very careful.

Even if you don't carry a balance on any of them (or even use them), having too many credit cards hurts your credit score.

I think your current setup is adequate for schoolwork. If you really need a certain program, you'd end up working in a computer lab 9/10 times.

and even if your parents are wrong, you shouldn't be cursing them. I mean they are your parents!

maybe tell them that it would make your life alot easier to have something portable, that you could use at classes and other places inbetween classes. good luck!

I agree with the laptop comments - portability is important. Desktop is nice, but you can't take it with you. You might also mention that you can still use the old monitor with your new laptop.

heres a plan ... if you're going to college you might be moving out, if you're moving out just do what you want come the fall and order it then. You can get a credit card or check card, do whatever you want.

Either way, given the scenario, I would just wait until revision b anyway in the future. Maybe your parents will see you as more responsible then and less impatient.

I was planning on ordering it of Apples store site since it seems that stock is low in the stores in our area and was under the assumption that they will only accept credit or debit online.

congrats! i would call your local apple store and find out if they have any in stock, waiting sucks (i'll be picking mine up from fedex on saturday when i'm back from vacation). also, i think they will allow you to do the credit plan there. i would be very surprised if that option isnt available in store.

Your desktop is adequate for your schoolwork. You should get that "short" fixed though (not really a short by the way, that word gets used MUCH too often by people). All that said, now that I have a laptop I can't imagine going back to just a desktop for college. Being able to take my laptop around campus and use it in labs and the library, etc is VERY helpful.

If your parents use XP, that comment may not hold a lot of water since they're likely used to having to reboot for no reason, with or without the short.

All joking aside, I don't blame your parents for looking for some justification - a new computer is a significant investment, and they want to help insure you're spending what could amount to a large chunk of your college disposable income on a new computer.

Outline your requirements - what you need to be able to do, why portability is important, etc. - and show them how several options map to those requirements. This will show them that you've thought it out, and that you're doing it for the right reasons. It may also help you make sure you're getting the right computer for your needs.

If you actually spend how much you can actually pay pack, obviously those kids do not understand what a credit card is and do not deserve one. It most definately is not free money.


You seem like a bright person. Just get a credit card. Many banks have student account options, where they give you a credit card with a low credit line. Mine started out at $500 i know others that start at $200. Its pretty important to start earning credit when you are young so that you dont have to pay huge interest rates later on within a small amount of time when you get older to buy a house or a car.

When my nephews went to college, I offered to purchase them an iMac or an iBook. Both choose iMacs for a variety of reasons one of which was security.

Your desktop computer has plenty of power for Office type tasks (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations).

Having said that, I realize that a laptop is very convenient. And as some others mentioned, waiting for revision B might be a good thing.

So even though your parents have said okay, be sure that you need it now. Otherwise you might want to wait a bit for revision B or...

The specs of his pc will run cad and photoshop. I can also tell you that it'll run 3d studio max. Architecture was my major and my computer specs while running acad 2000 3dsm and ps 6 were more than fine...better than fine...amazing even.

To the OP...just wait until school starts. You'd probably be better off...rev wise that is.

Get a cc, BUT only use it for emergencies. Otherwise use ur checking card. CCs have a way of making u feel u have more money than u really do.

In the UK we do, put ya money in ya account and ya card details on the site, then the money is debited from there.

You're not able to do that here per-say because you technically need to be of legal age of consent to sign the receipt (18). Some kids have them, some companies give them .... but it has potential problems
