So, is everyone ready for this Friday and the non-stop iPhone 3G posts in this thread?

We should have a contest to guess what time the first pic of a iPhone 3G shows up on this thread.

Probably a few minutes or seconds after they launch, someone will bring a laptop with them and take a pic and post it with the Apple Store's WiFi.

I guess we'll have to do like we did last year, whit the iPhone release, and STRONGLY ask people to make a dedicated "look at my iPhone 3G" thread, and delete most (all) form this one, temporarily making it into a "Post your (non-Apple) Phone"-thread...;)

Why not make your own official stickied: "LOOK AT MY IPHONE 3G ZOMG!!!!!!" thread and move any iPhone 3G posts to there insted of having people make loads and loads of iPhone 3G threads like you just know they will?

Blackberry Curve 8310, Nokia E71, Nokia N95, HTC Shadow, Apple iPhone, Nokia N76, and Sierra Wireless Aircard 881U

:) I work for a cell phone carrier, I get to demo units.

E71 ... AT&T??! Drop us a hint will ya, please?!

That or the E66 WILL be my very next phone!

Rogers Wireless is getting bad press over the iPhone lately!

*Bad contract decisions
*No unlimited data on network.
*pricing is mad crazy
*Limited initially (rumored) to NEW or HUP users (HUP=Hardware Upgrade).

Rumors abound that Apple was displeased (43K users petitioning against the pricing & data model Rogers has confirmed on their site) and sent the bulk of their orders to Europe. I'd believe the displeasure from Apple Executives, but sending the bulk of the order to Europe and not keep them south of border for sales doesn't quite make sense.

No not ATT, smaller regional carrier, E71 is my second favorite phone, bold is going to be here anytime now, iPhone is at&t only so we don't get them, doesn't mean some upper people in the corner offices don't have them ;) and their MacBook Air's. But when I ask them to replace my VAIO with a MacBook Pro, they say go ahead and try.

I know all about the Bold, BES & BIS2.5. The Bold will sell and I may get to play with one late this summer but as my main daily device ... just missing the consumer apps that I prefer and the ability to store maps on the MicroSD (unless something recently has changed). Its not impossible for the BB to be able to do this, just no official API support from RIM just yet.

http://blog.se-nse.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/se_c905_exclusive_pic.jpg

SE c905:
* 8MP (the .1 doesn't make a difference really lol) its still CMOS but the lens is supposed to be taken from the Cybershot Camera line so it SHOULD be better than my K850i. I say SHOULD because thats the hype that SE did with the K850i over the K790a. Only indoor or night shots seem to be better on the K850i.
* WiFi (802.11b/g)
* GPS (hardware but also Assisted; aka AGPS)
* Flash+Java based menu. Called their Capuchin Project. Its still an A200 phone like the K850i but it'll be very different.

The shutter on the back seems to be very slick! If you liked the K790a you'll LOVE this. But can you wait until 4th QTR?? October-December?!!

Just dropped AT&T like a hot potato. Sold our iPhones, which I miss a little.

I picked up the LG eNV2. Every day that goes by, I like it more and more.

My wife picked up the Palm Centro, then exchanged it for the LG Dare. She likes it so far.

I never have any of the problems with my phone that others have:

No battery life problems.
No sync problems.
No signal problems.
No large monthy bills.
No contracts with early-termination fees.
No risk of causing accidents by driving while talking.
No Bluetooth needed because it comes with its own earpiece connected, so you can't lose it!

Kinda makes you wonder why we go through all the hassles! :D

I totally agree. I'm 16 and like you, I pay for almost all my gadgets. It kind of annoys me when people say, "You don't need one of those." Well guess what, if I want it bad enough and can pay for it myself, why can't I have it?

Since it's the only sim-free phone I've had. And incredibly tough. Part of my fear of getting an iPhone or any posh phone is that it'd be damaged from an adventure.

And a plain ol Razr.

Now THAT is a sweet Communicator! You're not going to find a replacement unless you can deal with a smaller screen, No TV Out, no 30fps Video recording @ VGA res and go for the E71-2NAM. Or you can get a stowaway keyboard (BT) and get the N95-3 and use it with that when you NEED it.

Wait for a slimmer version end of 2009.

I even had one call where buddy locked his SKII (2004) in his car with the keys. He literary broke the window to get it so I could get the IMEI off of him into the Danger Tool to switch the ID over from his SKColor. Yes I heard him run down the street while on a cellphone (not the SKColor) and pick up a rock and then ... SMASH! Cheaper Data Plan I cannot argue with you on that ... save the fact that us in Canada on Fido paid the SAME $20/mth when we had it some 4yrs ago when our dollar was 87cents US. Gotta feel ripped off now.

Are you still limited to EDGE & 3 other email accounts on that? Along with only 1 IM client per IM server (1 client for AIM, another for MSN, etc etc)? When you delete emails can you purge them wirelessly out of the deleted items on AOL/Hotmail/Yahoo email?

Ppl choose different feature sets for their uses. BB's are great and very powerful, but I'd rather have an E-Series S60 phone. the OS offers just too much more for what I want. The SK is a great platform ... I just HOPE MS does put WM on it or they push Danger Inc to really push J2ME to the limits and open up their developer base without forcing dev's to null warranty on devices their coding for and allow for apps to be uploaded directly to the Catalog/Shopping Mall. Just as long as its tested to work well with varying models.

Yeah, it is indeed a luxury.
I would say anything but the free phones are a luxury.

But I had a smart phone for about a year and I got so used to the fuction of it, that it really spoiled me. I was able to stay MAJORLY organized, and I could run NES roms on it, which was cool too. I had a whole vintage arcade on my phone. Also, having the scroll wheel on the side is something that I miss.
Then I switched over to Verizon, and I didn't want my mother to have to pay for the outrageous data charges for Verizon. So now I have the LG Chocolate 2.
I'm so not impressed with it. The calendar sucks, everything about it is pretty much awful. It's really hard to keep organized.

Contract is up in April. I might just a blackberry at that point.
I'll have a job by then and will be able to pay for the data charges, not that my mom couldn't afford it.

I'm 15 by the way, and yes, I don't need a smart phone.. But it's REALLY nice to have if you use it's functionality.

I agree with that. I had a Sidekick 3 when it came out, and it felt obsolete even then. The SKs have been, and always will be, the king of the QWERTY keyboard, but other than that, the Sidekick is just a yuppy fashion phone. The form factor was perfect when the first ones debuted and all smartphones were bulky, but now, with other manufacturers making smaller and thinner smartphones with more features, I think it's hard for the Sidekick to keep up, as the form factor limits it from becoming small.

I've never owned a Blackberry, but they're very appealing with their new designs and features. The only thing I don't like about RIM is that the OS is, and always has, felt clunky to me. I agree with you that the E-Series Nokia S60 phones are great, but not even my E61 can compare to my iPhone. I'll occasionally SIM swap onto one of my four other unlocked phones, but my iPhone has everything on it and syncs so well with my Mac that I choose it everyday.

3G speeds are great, New OS and Browser are very responsive! Pages dont load as fast as iPhone 3G, But close, maybe 5-10 seconds slower. Speaker phone is 10x louder than iPhone 3G's.

Overall, This is a 9.5/10 BLackberry!:D

Basically your saying its Hand & Eye sex at first glance! Me I'll go for the E71 as its materials give the hands multiple orgasms! Bold is great, but beyond Email, plugin apps for sites, and a few apps that only slightly improve up the basic functionality (not including corporate/BES apps SAP for example) it doesn't offer the end user too much. Most pple won't use the Bold more than for calls, email, and surfing, GPS, BBMessenging.

Those that are planning to purchase the Bold should also look specifically at the WiFi specs and look for a new router that allows for a specific WiFi powersaving spec to reduce the Bold's WiFi powerdrain along with your other appliances total drain. Its WORTH IT!

Most ppl will upgrade to the Bold or iPhone in the USA for now.
robert.j.strain - take a good look at the bold, you may crave for it especially if you're within 30days of your upgrade and are on AT&T it should be there shortly.

Yeh, here in the UK we all can't get enough of MMS... we don't just email photos to a computer where you can do a lot more with them. Most people don't even know how to get a picture off their phone. MMS is about as popular as those little printers that print out photos... they end up giving them away.

And I can't even count the number of times that someone's tried to bluetooth a photo to me... they never just show me on their own screen or put it on facebook.

Ans to EDIT: I carry my DSLR when I go out for taking photos - I am often too busy to do that. Compacts are rubbish whether 2 or 8 mega pixels. My DSLR is awesome. I don't take videos. No need. :)

As to the C902--one of my best friends has it, and I've gotten to play with it extensively. If I weren't hooked on the keyboard on the M600i/didn't use the smartphone features, I'd have a C902...it's brilliant. The only downfall is the lack of a xenon flash, but if you can get over that, it's my pick for my favorite cameraphone right now.

I live the UK, a lot of people I know use MMS. Not all phones are flashy smartphones with decent e-mail clients, so MMS is very useful.

Absolutely everyone I know uses Bluetooth for file transfer. I couldnt live without that feature.

Phone cameras very very useful for taking photos of moments... Its no longer a case of "I wish I had a camera!" because you will have one! And obviously phone cameras are not as good as proper ones but a 3.2 megapixel camera is better than a 2.0 one with no video feature or flash! :p

As a photographer, I will say that megapixels has never equaled quality and never will equal quality. It is all dependant upon the lens, and a flash that is that tiny in a phone is not likely to do much good anyway. The light source will be so small that it will produce very harsh lighting, especially when not used very close to your subject. In other words I've never run into a camera phone that can come even remotely close to a real camera. And if a camera phone can't even rival a point and shoot then why the heck would I even want to use it? If I even want to take a picture I have my dSLR with me, if I don't have it with me than I don't take any pictures.

And I've honestly never used Bluetooth file transfer or MMS. If I want someone to see a picture/video or vice-versa I use email. Anyways, here's my phone; a White iPhone 3G 16GB.

How about you think about this:

There are people in the world who pay more than what an iPhone costs for 2 years, for a phone that isn't a smartphone in any way, shape, or form.

People who want an iPhone-like phone on a Sprint network pay a minimum of $2400 compared to a minimum of $1200 on AT&T with the iPhone (for a phone that is, in comparison, ****ing terrible...I absolute hate the Instinct).

It's their money. I have an iPod touch, and had an iPhone for a while (until my car broke down and I had to choose between a new car and keeping the phone), and I have never used a phone I've loved more (which includes my old flip phones, my mom's Centro, my old Treo, a blackberry and the Instinct). If MMS is a deal-breaker, then that's why there are other phones...I won't pretend like it's excusable that the iPhone doesn't have it, but I'm also not going to pretend it makes the phone worthless not having it. Same for video capture, except, well, you can always get it by jailbreaking :p

Whoops. To answer the question, I'm back on my crappy old phone to save money ;.;

I don't get why people include the cost of the contract in with the price of the phone and say that both those added together is the total cost of the phone, that doesn't make sense, at all. I paid $300 for the phone, and the contract that is paid every month is for a service, not a continuation of the cost of the item. What's so hard to understand about that?

And yes I'm sure your Carl Zeiss lens in your camera phone can match even an Olympus E-410 and a 25mm pancake lens. And that your little flash can match even the popup flash on said camera, especially when you get into a darker room and the camera phone has to bump up the ISO :p.

But then all the other phones are worth varying amounts. It's only the iPhone that is quite a stable price. For example, I haggled with Vodafone down to £15 a month (cheap in the UK) with a free N95 8GB (Worth £400 according to what I sold it on ebay for when I got it).

You can't add up your tariff and compare it to someone else's and then say "oh the iPhone costs £1000" because it doesn't. All handsets are subsidized somewhat, otherwise the "free" phones are worth literally nothing.

While its true that most handsets are subsidized, calculating the total cost of ownership is still valuable. Take this hypothetical example for iPhone v N95:

iPhone 3G: $199 (device) + 24*($40 (minutes)+$30(data)+$5(txt))=$1999

N95-8: $550 (device, estimated) + 24*($40(minutes)+$15(data)+$5(txt))=$1990

So even though the N95 is $350 more expensive for the device itself, it still works out about even over 2 years. I'm not debating which phone is "better" (i have a 2G iphone myself), just giving an example.

I did the another calculation like this when I purchased my LCD TV. Getting HD service increased my cable bill by $25/month, so I tied that into my calculation for seeing if the TV was affordable.

But you get the Nokia for FREE! So take off the $550...

You can't add up your tariff and compare it to someone else's and then say "oh the iPhone costs £1000" because it doesn't. All handsets are subsidized somewhat, otherwise the "free" phones are worth literally nothing.

What? That's exactly what you can and should do?
You can compare the cost of contracts with the same minutes/text/data over the same minimum period, add on whatever the handset costs and that's the total cost of ownership - The pricetag on the handset or how much it's subsidized doesn't mean anything.
Personally I think £15 a month is an expensive contract in the UK, which is why you're getting a £400 handset thrown in.
Possibly the wrong forum thread to talk about 'how to buy things' :)

Just got it - The Samsung Instinct. It's not bad. What I like about it is the haptic-like feedback when typing or choosing icons, etc.

The "everyone get" part is one of the reason's I'll never buy the iPhone 3G. Plus I don't feel like owning a locked phone nor do I wish to pay $30 for data when I can get the same for half.

QUICK! Return it and get the BlackBerry Storm in 6wks when Telus is able to launch it!

Pros!?

*CDMA 900/1800Mhz with EVDO Rev A
*GSM/GPRS/EDGE quadband 850/900/1800/1900/Mhz
*UMTS on 2100Mhz (HSPA 7.2Mbps specs) for Europe travells!
You want better haptics?! The market doesn't have ANYTHING that compares!!

Also I've read it plays 720p MP4's without conversion or issues.

Works, texting isn't bad. I would love a 32GB iPhone 3G (if Apple ever released one)....but yeah, LG enV. The color is horrid, lol. I'm eligible for an upgrade but, there's really nothing on VZW that I want.

had this phone for a while!
o2 pay as you go

very good phone. simple to use. 5mp camera. 1gb sd card. got a few songs n pictures/ videos on it.

wanting to get iphone 3g 16gb pay as you go, but its £400 for the iphone itself then £10 a month, then £20 a month after 12 months. With no free texts. which i get on my samsung :)

i'd deffiantly get the iphone if it was reduced in price, or if have that kind of money to spare, and could keep my own simcard with all my free texts that i get montly!

I've got a Moto k3. I like the all-metal design & shiny buttons but battery life leaves a lot to be desired... I may contact Motorola about a new battery as it's still under warranty.
I only use it for calling & texting (got my new camera for photography :D). Got it fairly cheaply (£48 new ), SIM free from eBay.

Ive had phone for just over a week now and it is a great phone it a big step up from my old samsung,
camera is really good, surfing the net via wi-fi is good and fast i haven't tried it via 3g my only gripe
is the mp3 player it looks great and works well but it doesn't allow you to play folders of music it breaks
folders down into albums but there a few alternative mp3 players which are cool.

hope that helps another questions feel free to ask

Sony are good at everything except phones. I have a collection of phones, all the Sony Ericssons in that collection are broken in some say, where as the Nokias and even a Motorola still work fine! Sony Ericsson make phones that are fun for a few minutes until you get tired of a crappy video editor and flashy cameras, then you will be able to use it for a few months before the thing starts falling apart.

Don't even get me started on anything made by Micro$oft.

sounds like uv had a bad experience, tht sucks. Every sony phone iv ever had still works perfect :) motorola sucks, i HATE those phones! I'm the kind of person tht gets a new phone pretty frequently but the only phones iv ever gone back to again and again is my sony k800i (tht thing lasted 2 days on a bars rooftop terrace and i got it back and it still worked perfectly!) and a nokia. Got to say i wasn't too sure about windows mobile when i got it but its been great so far so no complaints there from my experiences. Was thinking abt getting the iphone but it was just missing too much for me :(

All the Sony Ericssons I ever bought are now broken... Thats about 7 phones... I got a W800i, D750i, V800i, 2 T300s, and a few more. The most recent thing to happen is with the V800i, which after working fine for months has suddenly stopped getting signal, no matter how many times a mess with the SIM or reset it. Thing is I have some very old Ericsson phones (before Sony bought them out) and they work fine!

Motorola do suck, a lot. However, my A835 works a lot better than my Sony Ericssons.

You'll love it better with HTC's TouchFlo 3D on it - and yes its possible (check esato.com's major 'official' thread on this phone). However you should've waited until the X1a debuted for better 3G support. Battery life is good on X1 but not better than my E71-2. Also install the SPB Shell and show it to PowerFullMac - he may change his tune about WM ... I almost did (even after the sour taste that the Q9h left in my hands.

Best phone ever...

I concur! Whole heartedly!
Best 3G HSDPA battery life of ANY phone on the market - including the K850i I used to own.
Best smartphone OS S60 3rd Edition FP1 with FP2 goodness custom to this and the E66 slim slider.
So many useful apps in S60 C++ Carbide, C++, Python S60 (Py60), and Ruby. including flash lite 3 for real website browsing that NO OTHER SMARTPHONE has including WM 6.1 Pro/Standard.

Unless you're going to buy the X1 or the upcoming Xperia with Symbian Foundation OS (the evolution of S60, UIQ, etc) late summer 09; I would advise against buying another SE for a while without 6mth reviews. They've slacked in quality control and it hurts me because I love Ericsson/SE phones. I remember the pain you went through with your W800i.
