I hear it is a good idea to install apps on a separate HD (if you have one) – that it lets your apps run more smoothly. Is this the smae case for a separate partition? Or is it not possible to do this in mac OS as you need the associated system files on the same partition?

You can have apps on another partitions, but it doesn't help with anything that I can think of. With OS X's archive and install, the usual advantage of having a different partition for apps so that you don't lose them if you need to do a reinstall also doesn't apply.

I can't see it matters where your apps are because when they are running they run from ram don't they, not from the HD.

This is a good idea on windows because you have to reformat so much, but on OS X it is almost pointless.
