Well here's one I haven't heard of...

My poor MacBook Pro has begun to "peel". Pics for proof...

Well, back to Apple!

Comments?

Whine didn't bother me, neither did the heat, which in my experience is a HUGE RELIEF from my 12" PowerBook, but this irks me.

Anyone else see this? Even a PowerBook?

Whoa thats incredibly odd, I havent seen anything like that yet. I also havent noticed it anywhere on my mbp. Let us know how the rma goes and what apple says =)

Mine's doing exactly the same thing below the page down key, right down to the hairline black scratches (indeed a bit more peeled off while I was editing the post)...

Very annoying.

I'm going to stockpile a number of different issues before mine goes back...

The list currently stands at whine and peeling.

very interesting. mines no MBP but it is a 2 year old powerbook, and there is no peeling...

one wonders why so many issues with so many new machines... but then we have beaten that topic to death haven't we...

good luck on your fixes.

Aah, looks like my friends PowerBook G4 Rev D. He dropped it down some stairs, it still works, but it is really peely on the front.:(

I try not to touch the thing there, because this is the 3rd ... 'case' I've seen of a MacBook Pro peeling (but none in person). Mine does not peel though.

Kinda sucks...have you tried calling AppleCare even though they don't take care of cosmetic problems.

Sorry to have to ask this, but how does solid aluminium "peel"? The casing for the MacBook is not painted, it's just a piece of anodized metal. The damage in the pictures above looks much more like scratching (imho). Are you sure it hasn't been caused during use - possibly by a finger ring, watch, etc?

I keep looking at the surface of MBP and i think it actually has a metallic coating rather than being solid metal - It almost looks matte metallic car paint but am not really sure.

Also the area than peels on the image above is a different part and made of a different material than the rest of the body. I'll avoid touching that area as much as possible now. :(

The MacBook Pro & PowerBook G4s are all aluminum (except the titanium obviously) and they are painted. If you take the paint off it is very...shiny and ... ugly.

Why would I pick at a $1799 computer? :)

I haven't tried calling yet. I'm way too busy this weekend to waste time with Apple Care. I'll give them a call (second) thing Monday morning.

It's not a scratch. I don't wear jewelry of any kind.

I've got the same thing, and worse.

http://petemc.net/images/dots.jpg

Dots have appeared where my hands rest on my MBP.

I also have the chipping. It appeared today as a small dot, so I tried to remove it with my nail and the paint just came off so easily.

http://petemc.net/images/chipping.jpg

Has anyone had it fixed in any way? Is it possible to pop into a store, in the UK, and get it fixed there and then?

pete,

I've got the same thing with the small dots appearing under my hand rest as well...

No flaking yet that I can see, but the dots are pretty obviously there. I thought it was dirt at first but I couldn't get it to go away... thought I was just crazy.

I'm not kidding when I say I have the dots too!
I thought I was going crazy.
Seriously, they're all over the right side.

I also have a small dot at a spot above the keyboard, but I haven't tried picking at it.
Not only this, but the silver latch button has peeled.

Has anyone with the peeling problem just below the keyboard had any luck with solving the issue or spoke to apple to hear what they had to say?

I have had my MBP for only a few months and have got a little bit of peel just below the alt key :(

It happened when i was cleaning the computer, a little bit of dirt was stuck there and when it came off it brought the paint off with it. I dont really understand how this can happen when the thing is ment to be made out of Aluminium, but i think maybe just that little insert below the keyboard is plastic and just spray painted?

Anyone with any info please let me know

Thanks

The black dots on the aluminum powerbooks has been a long standing problem. The problem is the acid in your skin corrodes the aluminum. Its called pitting and only affects certain people. Certain people have more acid in their system than others and thus this effect. That is why a bunch of people will post that it doesn't happen to them and people with pitting just sit there with question marks on top of their heads. Apple will pretend they have question mark on their heads too but they know about the problem. All you can do is exchange it and not touch the powerbook.

For those of you with the dots on the palmrests, that's the aluminum pitting. If I remember right, it's because of a chemical reaction between the aluminum and your skin - you have acidic skin. My powerbook has the exact same thing. And I don't think it's reversable.

Mine is too, and in the same spot.

And I have not picked at it. I just noticed it the other day.

I have not called applecare yet as I cant really afford to be without my laptop if they were to allow me to send it in. I will have to wait til thanksgiving possibly, as that is the next extended period for school to be out.

No one pays close to 3K for a machine for it start peeling after only a few months. If it were years I would understand, but this is way too soon.

OMFG what are you guys doing with your MBPs? I use mine ALL DAY for 5 days a week and I don't have anything like that. there is a littl dirt near the trackpad but thats it. wow.

Well, back to Apple!

Unless they have an improved upper case design (which I doubt) the same thing is going to happen again with a new case. You might as well keep it; especially if it is a common cosmetic occurance with other MBP's.

Mine had the same issue under the right Apple key. Apple Store and AppleCare will NOT likely fix it. Luckily for me, I had a sticky and semi-problematic trackpad button, so they replaced my whole cover.

I have the same problem and I bought mine in June and I only use it part time. Apparently has something to do with the heat levels in the MBP. Macbooks are having the same issue except the whole area where the palms of your hands is pealing.

the macbooks are not having this issue at all. I think there was ONE case reported with somebody who had a peeling palmrest. the black macbooks have had a few cases of peeling too - mine did.

I would never ever acccept Apple telling me that they won't repair this under warranty. If your macbook pro is otherwise in good condition and not showing any abuse or other marks, then it's obviously a manufacturing problem and not due to your abuse.

Hardware is hardware. if the warranty covers hardware defects, then the case is also covered since it's part of the hardware.

Don't let Apple get away with this!

Wow I didn't realize my thread had been bumped so much.

Update: Can't give pics now, but the palm area has begun to pit just like my PowerBook G4. The "peeling" has gotten much worse. Oh well...

Actually the wrist rest is made of silver coloured plastic, not aluminium, so that may just be the paint peeling off :o

Is this supposed to be offensive or something? Against Mac-Fanboy law?

What else is going to play .wmvs reliably... without giving errors?

Dude, I have the same EXACT problems in my 1.5-years-old AL G4
Powerbook. Pitting on the right side of the trackpad (near the palm rests)
and paint peeling below the left command key. I don't have apple care
though, so I can do nothing about it :(.

I had scratches on my old MBP because I wore a watch, and when I typed it was scraping the bottom left of the case. Had hairline scratches all over.

A ring could impose similar effects.

My 2 year old Macbook Pro just started peeling today - that same area. I thought there was something on it and went to scratch it - heh the something on it got bigger! I have so many other cosmetic problems though - my keys started peeling almost immediately after I got it and I eventually just snapped them off and replaced them - only one of the new keys has showed any signs of wear in 6 months. Where my right hand sits near the trackpad there's all this black pitting and it looks like the paint has worn off right by the edge.

What a mess! Makes me think I should have gotten a regular Macbook this aluminum/aluminum paint clearly can't handle my toxic skin/sweat.

it does that because it is anodized, or painted:(:apple:

Also, anyone find a sol'n to the latch button, as mine looks pretty destroyed because of all the different peeling going on there.
