obviously a biased poll as most of the traffic is coming from a rumor site...

Since I have found macrumors, I have listened very carefully on rumors of
new products and such so I can time my purchases wisely. If the Power 970
rumors are true, I will be buying a new mac when I go to college in August.

Yes, I try not to get in on the front end of a new product. Let Apple get the bugs and and possibly lower the price a little. I also avoid buying right before a new release because of the heart sinking feeling that you bought an obsolete piece of hardware.

Yeah, I know that feeling...I bought my mac 4 months ago...now it's obsolete and cheaper!
But I also hate being on 'the bleeding edge'...buying stuff so new that it's not supported by anything else...or so buggy that it's useless.

It's all about being an educated consumer, especially when buying something as expensive as a computer. Rumor sites (at least this one!) give you more info on which to base your decision. Of course, you have to balance your need for a machine with all the waiting, and you can't be lured in by the promise of some vaporware and just sit there forever...

If I hear on a site such as this, that there will be an amazing update to the product I am about to buy, which will be released next week, then I will wait it out a bit longer. Other than that, I generally look at when the product was released, and when it is likely to be updated. If it is fairly new, then buy it.

To some extent, yes I do let Rumors affect my purchasing decision.
However, once I became aware of Apple's product cycles, I let that guide me more than the Rumors sites.
Although with the forums here, you get a lot more than just rumors.

It will for now on, i would love to upgrade but if apple keeps with sloww butt motorola then ill get a sonnet card say 1.2ghz. But if the RUMORED 970 shows then one of those machines! Thanks rumors its nice to have some kind of clue of what apple may be thinking instead of the blank slate.

somewhat yes, if the general consensus agrees that, for instance, new iBooks will be released in a few weeks, then I would wait for the new iBooks before making my purchase. off the wall rumors or ones that seem highly unlikely are just entertainment for me and I dont consider them when purchasing.

I definately do, I don't want to buy something to have it be outdated a month after I buy it. I hear a lot of people worried about buying something as soon as it has been released, but I bought one of the very first flat imacs that came out, and it still seems like it was a really great purchase. I have had no problems with it at all, and they had only minor upgrades for it. I have yet to feel my heart sink into my stomach on this one. I would think most of the people at this forum are here to see what the next big thing will be, so they can make the right purchase.

Nothing is more frustrating than knowing a new piece of hardware is coming out and NOT BUYING AND WAITING.
Grrrrrr! 15 in AL-PB anyone!?!?!?!

I think rumor sites give me one more resource for researching my purchase decisions. For instance, if I had no clue about the PPC 970, I would have bought one of these new fancy-schmancy new MDD tower, and been SOL when the new processor comes out. Although they are wonderful machines, I am not about to invest $3k into something that is about to be stomped upon by a new model.
I bought my Dual 533 used because of just this. My cube could just not keep up with my growing needs, and the towers at the time just weren't worth buying new.
But on the flipside, I think rumor sites end up delaying product announcements because of their recent popularity. When many potential buyers know about an upcoming product, the old ones don't sell. (see:15" PowerBook) Therefore Apple delays the announcement till stocks are at a low enough level to warrant it. Which then leads to a chain reaction of slower updates and disappointed customers.

Yes. For instance, the rumor sites have told me that I should wait before buying an iPod right now, and I am, because I think that they rae right and there will be updates soon.

i listen to guys at apple when i make a decision :P
it's kinda nice because you know whether or not the rumors are actually true and stuff like that :D
nevertheless, macrumors is great and what people say on this rumor site is pretty interesting...so rumor sites will be a factor.

I keep a close eye on what is written on this Forum, that is why I still have my G4 450 MHZ with Mac OS 9.

i asked a bunch of questions and got lots of great advice just before i was ready to buy my iMac in august, and i'm presently sitting on the fence waiting for an iPod update. Rumor sites will of course influence most of my future apple purchases, too. Thanks MacRumors! :)

Simple answer: yes.
I'm a student on a restricted budget. I can't throw around thousands of dollars on something that will be updated the next week.
With an upcoming summer job that pays $9.50 an hour I should have nearly $6000 by the beginning of September. If the towers are updated to a chip other than the G4, guess where my money is going. If not, then I'll wait. I have time, and in this case, money as well. I need something that will last me another 6+ years, much like my old iMac has.
With rumor sites like this one, it makes it easier for me to decide when is the best time I can get the most bang for my buck. Rumors are also holding of my iPod purchase even though I have $400 in the bank just waiting for a shiny new iPod.

when i bought my iBook back in November I looked at every possible rumor site and they all seemed to agree that the updates would happen on Election day. The date was then pushed back to that Wednesday and I waited until then to order. I'm very tankful for all the work all the rumor sites do so that even the tiny mac marketshare can enjoy the best mac products when they are new.

I haven't bought a new machine personally since I've been visiting rumor sites. But its keeping me from buying a new one until the 970s come out. So it is affecting my purchase. I've found it quite valuable in watching the trends and keeping up with the latest software as well.

For Sure!!!
i always check before i make a purchase. It has saved me a ton of money and it helps me dump off my old machines before their value drops off.

You betcha. I was about to buy my first computer, had gotten quotes for an iMac. Stumbled on MacRumours just as rumours were starting to fly about an upgraded model. Result: I waited and watched, and the day the new Macs came out, I bought. I send this from my glorious 1gHz 17" imac, which I just love and which is faster, better, and cheaper then what I would have gotten without this site.
