itunes help...duplicate files

for some reason, i guess itunes imported my music files twice into itself and now it shows each song twice in the library (see pic).

Is there any way to remove the duplicate songs from itunes automatically? I'd hate to have to go through and delete each one individually.

Delete them all from the library (not the computer) and add them all again once.

This does of course solve the problem but why does it happen?

don't drag playlist file in with the songs

This was happening to me and annoying me to no end, but it turns out that iTunes makes another copy of each mp3 if there's a playlist file, such as an m3u, in the batch that you're dragging in. In my case there were two playlist files, so iTunes was creating THREE copies of each file.
