I am thinking about purchasing the imac - when will the supposed cycle as rumored in 1/06 end ? What is "duo core" and when should I buy ???

I'm not sure what you mean by the cycle and when it'll finish, but Core Duo is an Intel chip that powers some new Macs (and PCs). Buy a Mac when you're happy with the specification, at that price, and when you need it. 🙂
