I just got my macbook and i am new to the mac osx world. I installed some apps yesterday and most of them found ways to install unwanted icons in my dock. Is there some way i can customize the dock , primarily to remove stuff and add the icon for the Terminal. All help will be deeply appreciated.

Welcome to Macs.

Drag icons to the Dock to add, and drag them off the Dock to remove. Alternatively, you can press CONTROL and click on an icon in the Dock and select Remove From Dock. 🙂

The equivilant for a Windows shortcut on a Mac is an alias (except an alias is much more robust and reliable than a windows shortcut).

On the dock, you just drag from the original application file onto the area to the left of the black bar on the dock. The area to the right of that bar is just for folders, the rubbish, and minimized apps...
