Just a little curious to see if anybody fits the two stereotypical computer geek profiles:

1) Super skinny computer geek

2) Super fat computer geek

(That pretty much covers everything :D)

Personally, I'd be closer to number 1, but not exactly super skinny.

So, in other words, someone, who spends day in and day out memorizing the periodic table?

>2) Super fat computer geek

In other words, someone, who spends their days chatting with women from their computer?

I'm not much of either, somewhere in the middle. Although I don't chat all day with women from the computer, so I'm probably closer towards the skinny side. :p

Well, yes... that would be me (Hey, I'm studying biochemistry! I sorta need to know the periodic table!).

Technically, I'm not exactly super skinny. I've been doing weight training for the last 5 years and I have a medium build + ~10.2% body fat.

You sound pretty much like me. I'm only 5'6" and I weigh a mere 135lbs. Unfortunately, that 10.2% body fat isn't enough to get me a super cut six-pack :(.

I used to be pretty chubby when I was younger tho

My weight has never really varied because of the computer. I'm only about 10 pounds over what I weighed in high school--I was about 112 when I graduated. In early 1999, I was 155, due being upset and eating too much. That's unlike when I was in Philly and just liked the food too much and got to 150. For 5'7" (1.7m), that's just too much for me. Then again, some time last year, I was down to 116.

Btw, I knew most of the periodic table in 4th grade, so sue me! :D

Yup. I'm overweight. I eat at Burger King 4 times a day, what can I say?

I guess I would fall into "loser white trash" computer geek category. I'm a super geek. I like cars a lot. I drive a Pontiac Grand Prix, which has to be the most white trash car next to a 69 Charger painted orange with two black racing stripes. I laugh at computer jokes. I make fun of filesystems. I like 80's metal.

So, just picture a 20 year old kid with long hair, covered with grease, working under the hood of a black Grand Prix, with a computer magazine sitting on the filter housing, reading, while changing the thermostat on said car, laughing at Windows users, wearing a T-shirt two sizes too small, and has a belly showing.

Lol. Same here. I can see the muscles, but that 1/4" layer of fat sorta blurs it out like a photoshop filter :D.

Aside from a little competitive baseball and some track and field, I used to be pretty inactive back in high school as well. I only started working out in grade 11 and now i'm addicted like mad. What do you do to stay fit eye?

Shadowfax: Ass is good. Man-ass is bad. As are man-boobs. Seriously, I'm more into the athletic types. I like girls that have fit, lean bodies.

übergeek: Stop being so modest! 90lbs may be a bit slim, but there are a lot of women who would kill for your physique. You might want to try working out with some very light weights (3lb-15lbs) to build a little lean muscle and gain some body mass. Guys be drooling over you in no time ;)

well like I said...I maintain a pretty decent diet...no fast foods...low on the high calorie foods (soft drinks, sweets, fried, etc.)...

3-4 days a week I workout on a Bowflex...and I try to alternate the other days with my mountain bike...depending on the weather, I'll do anywhere up to 11 miles...

(Yes, I'm that ripped. Swimming and running for state championship teams have a tendency to do that to people.)

The other day I had to get a shot. The nurse kept looking for some fat for a target. In the end she had to put the needle in muscle.

Bow-Flex and other trainers can work but only if you know how and stick with them. I recommend getting personal training first and learning how to properly train. It's not something you can just pick up and do well.

I myself am about 5'11"-5'12" and weigh around 160. I'm not fat or skinny, just there... My friends call me skinny, but most of them are kinda big, and they play sports and stuff like that...

My older brother, who is 20, is about 5'13"-5'14", and he broke 100 pounds about a year ago... He is as skinny as a toothpick. Even after a year and a half of college, he hasn't began to put on mass... I'm beginning to wonder what's wrong with him... He eats a lot, and never puts on any weight. Weird...

The big difference as I see it is there are people there that either you will get to know or already know and they will expect a certain amount of performance from you. At home it's too easy to get distracted or to just say that you are taking the day off from working out. Peer pressure works for good sometimes. I think once you get into the routine of working out regularly for a few years you might be able to start doing it at home and keep it up.

Oh by the way about EYE being a recording because of 5000 posts in 2 years. What does that make me? I'm at nearly 3000 in 7 months.

I'm just shy of 5'7" and I weigh about 158 pounds right now. I need to lose about 10-12 pounds...

When I was in HS, i wrestled, ran cross country and played tennis. I then weight trained all through college and law school. Afterwards, I stopped for a while, and have put on some insulation.

I'm really lucky in that I can work out for a month and look dramatically different. I bulk up quick.

5'11, like 185.

i think i used to be more and then i stopped eating meat. so freshman year of college i got to about 165. the freshman -20... but since then i've spent a few summers home eating my mom's great home cooking. though i do go to the gym occasionally now. that'll end once school's done and i don't have free access to a gym though

and at home. i have nothing to do but computer stuff (and golf)... so i won't be getting much skinnier anytime soon. unless this vegan thing pans out. most vegans end up pretty scrawny....

all in all though, i don't give a rat's ass. ;)

Ya know....

I must have the worlds slowest metabolisim. I am a 20 year old male. I am 5'8 and weigh 180lbs. I am not really "fat", more like chubby, but I am in really bad shape. I am like crisco over bone! I can't figure it out either. I have a resonably physically active job where I move boxes all day. I don't eat a tremendous amonut. I don't drink alcohol. I know skinny people who eat probably 2x as much as me.

I used to go to the local health club, and I would work out (weights, running, stair climbing, ect...) for about 5 hrs a week for like 5 months straight. I ate healthy, but I still had a big gut. Most of the fat I carry is around the waist, and no matter how much weight I seem to lose, I never seem to lose weight there. My face gets slimmer, my legs got more well defined, but my "full keg" never seemed to get any smaller. It got really frustrating. Finally I got burnt out on all that work and stopped going to the health club, although I still pay for it. I gained a little weight back and I got a little flabbier, but It really didn't make that much of a diffrence.

I would REALLY like to be in great shape, and I would really like to be healthy and be able to go upstairs without running out of breath. I even tried those stupid ephedra based (metabolife, ect..) things, but one day I was walking and I felt really sharp pains in my are and side and it really freaked me out and I said I would never take those things again. They also made me really edgy.

I am going to try again this summer, since I am going off to college, and want to make a good impression. I just don't know what to do!!!

Ugh.... 6'1, 290

When my wife had the kids, I gained the weight:rolleyes:

In the nine years since my 1st son was born, she's gained something like 20 pounds (10 in the upper body :D ) and gone from a 6-7 to a 9-10.

I, on the other hand, went from a 198 pound hunk to an overweight, balding, middle aged man. I even used to be an aerobics instructer. Quit laughing. Really. I said quit laughing.

Ah well. My blood pressure freaked my doctor last week  , so now my weight is on the downswing. I was trying to lose anyway, but now I have encouragement.

Ubergeek: Quit worrying about being a plumper, and worry about being healthy instead. You will be better off for it.

He is 59 6'1" and 140lbs. 10 years ago he was 150lbs. He eats 3 times what I do but can't keep the weight on. Could be that he hikes 40-60miles a week.

I'm trying to convince my brother to drink... As far as I know, he doesn't, but if he did, and he put on some weight, I don't think my parents would care too much, unless he would get really wasted, and got really fat... He stays active enough, though...

i wasn't suggesting binge drinking:rolleyes:, though that would get the job done faster. something reasonable, like 1-2 glasses of wine (more alcohol, tastes better [IMO], and probably smacks of a bit "classier" to you) a day... just something to keep your metabolism down a bit.

I'm a firm believer in eating enough to stay alive... and that's all. Of course I might go to a nice restaurant and pig, but in moderation to the minimum. My buddy is 6'0" and 370. His idea of a snack was a 16" pizza and a six-pack before dinner. I said "was" becasue that was a while ago. Now he has diabetes.
My advice? None. I also believe you can be in excellent health and still not fit into the "normal" guidelines for obesity.

Well, you are kinda skinny from the sound of it, but I think that if you feel great at your current weight, don't worry about it. On the other hand, if you really want to gain some body fat, just be sure to eat more food after dinner and especially late at night, when your metabolism is at its slowest. Most of the food you eat at that time gets stored.

Also, like I said before, you can try the weight gain protein powder that you can get at any nutrition store (don't worry, you won't get muscular just from that stuff). Whatever you do, don't buy the strawberry flavours!

Have fun

well, it's the biggest city i've ever lived in. i hate the weather for the most part, though some winter and spring days are nice. the summers are utterly unbearable outside. i do like how big it is, though, and i love the culture and a lot of the people around here--by culture, i mean jazz concerts, art exhibits, symphonies, and so on--there is just a lot more of it than i was used to 5 years ago (when i wasn't old enough to appreciate it, anyway). yeah. sou that's austin. how's New Orleans? getting ready for Mardi Gras?

nah...wasn't trying to go completely off topic there... ;)

I've heard a lot of good things about Austin from those who do not live there. I wanted an insider's POV. It sounds like a cool city that I'd love to check out sometime. A buddy of mine is dating someone out there, he wants me to go with him when he goes back...so I'll likely be heading up there sometime soon. :)

As for New Orleans...I hate to sound like a grump...but I'll be glad when Mardi Gras is over. Tomorrow's the big day, Fat Tuesday, and I'll be riding in the parade uptown. It's always more fun to ride than participate, IMO. The city gets in party mode, and at least for a couple weeks everyone seems to be aiming to have a good time more than anything else. ;)

I am big time frustrated right now. I haven't played ball in like 3 1/2 months. It shows! I went from 5'10" and 156lbs to 169 1/2 lbs with a couple of love handles developing.......now I am mad! I can't play outside because it has been freaking cold out....average temperature here has been 15 degrees and we have had an average of at least 20 inches of snow on the ground. I can't seemingly play indoors either......can't afford YMCA because I just got laid off from work Feb 14th and the college gym has been busy with college games plus high school playoffs for both male and female basketball and wrestling........our college is one the better wrestling schools out there.......We have Bruce Baumgartner as Athletic Director.........he is a 2 time gold metal winner in the Olympics and he also has a silver and bronze metal.......he wrestled in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Barcelona, and I can't remember the other one. So the college is always hosting a bunch of wrestling tournaments and well that cuts down on opportunities to work out. I can't wait until May..........I am going to work out like crazy......I thought practicing basketball for 4-6 hrs a day, 7 days a week was bad in high school.....I will probably have to work out 8 hrs a day, 7 days a week.......just to get back in shape for my wedding July 19th. I am getting the basketball itch pretty bad too with the NBA and NCAA ball on tv and even Lebron James games on tv gets me going. Hurry up winter and disappear so I can start playing ball again.......I want to be my old high school ball playing shape......I am sick of this lack of muscle tone and showing of love handles!
