i keep meaning to pick up a couple of cards for internet sharing. it's expensive but i want the actual airport base. but for now, i don't.

i was so pissed off when i found out this "airport-ready" imac needs a special adaptor for a card...

the adaptor comes with the airport card. its just a pcmcia mount really.

Using Linksys Wireless-G Router and iMac with AE card. Works like a charm. Airport makes wireless setup a snap.

Only problem is I still cannot get the iMac to work with WEP, yet.

not anymore, no machines currently need it, so apple stopped including them, you have to buy the transposer card seperately.. I think that is the correct term.

I have a netgear 802.11b router in the other room, with 2 (family) PCs plugged into 2 of the rear connections, and then my lil' tiBook (mine only) in my room using it's good old airport card.

For almost a year (ever since the flat panel iMac introduction the card and the CRT iMac adapter are sold seperately, but they did reduce the Airport card to $79.99 and sell the adapter for $19.99 - the original price was $99.99 for the card/adapter

The most affordable and useful soltion is to use a Belkin USB 802.11b adapter. It can be used on any Mac that can take USB, even USB PCI cards. It can also be used on a PC and os 9-X.

You can get them from Staples this week for $40

or from the Belkin website

My wife has the Airport Card in her iBook. We purchased the AirPort Base Station at MWNY. Called tech support for assistance, determined that it was defective. We got a full refund.

Since we have Earthlink DSL, signed up for their Home Networking. Have the ZWire HP 100, it has given us good service! :)

I agree, its so nice to be able to surf from wherever you want. The problem is that its sometihng you don't think about when your realyl used to a desktop but once you try it makes suring so much more comfortable. Also it makes a good case for something like a 17" pb so that you could find a comfy spot and surf but still have a decent amount of power but for now I'm on the iBook.

Only problem is I still cannot get the iMac to work with WEP, yet. Just resolved this recently, myself. You'll find the answers you need here (http://www.macwindows.com/airportpc.html). While most of it is about using non-Apple PC cards with Airport base stations, it also give you the information you need to connect the two platforms any which way.

Paul or anyone else with a 350mhz iMac that needs the adapter. yes it is about 20$ so I wouldn't bother with an external USB crap. I have it and it works great, just pops in.
the bigger deficiency in this model though is lack of firewire, and no way to add that I am afraid.

the poll is a little too simple, I have Airmac (japanese airport) and a NEC warpstar Aterm basestation. I have a grey basestation but the 2 PCs in the house being japanese only were too much trouble to set up, the brother in-law set up them with the basestation. No matter the whole set-up works like a dream and now we have yahooBB phone VOIP! what I want now is a 802.11b phone!

You have to convert the key to hex, then put into your imac.

All the time...and, I can't resist a quick story.

I'm a 20-yr. PC veteran who finally bought a Mac - TiBook 1ghz. I got it home just as it was starting to snow one evening a few weeks ago. Sat down on the sofa and settled in to play with the new "toy" while the snow piled up. I turned it on and waited while it ran through the initial configuration routine. When it asked me if I wanted to connect to the Internet, I thought, "nah...I don't want to screw around installing wireless card software and specifying CSID numbers like on my PC laptops - I want to play around with this thing!"

So I said no, and the machine pleaded with me, "are you sure...Mac makes it really easy." I gave in and said "yeah, what the heck". One click and Explorer pops up and lands me at the Apple site. The Airport card located my wireless network and there I am surfing the 'Net 15 minutes after I turn the unit on for the first time.

If I could find more software, I'd buy one of those new dual 1.42's PM's and get rid of my Wintel desktop forever. What a machine!

It's more a matter of my perception of general software availability than a particular package at this point. But two packages that I can't do without are Visio and Access.
