any way to stop apple mail from opening mail automatically

for example when selecting a message in your inbox, it automatically opens it in the bottom pane? isn't this unsafe?
 
Yeah it's not unsafe but if you're worried about it you can double click the bar between the list of messages and the actual email to collapse it. You can also turn off displaying remote HTML images in the Viewing pane of Mail's Preferences. 🙂
