This is where all you DT fans can post about all things dream theater, including your favorite DT songs, bands that DT fans will appreciate, and DT shows that you've attended.
My favorite songs:
1. In the name of God (Train of Thought)
2. These walls (Octivarium)
3. The killing hand (When dream and day unite)

All Dream Theater fans should definitely try listening to Liquid Tension Experiment, Sonaa Arctica, and Tool.

Can't Say I've ever been to a DT show, but I have the video from when they played at Bukodan.

Dream Theater rocks!

Great band, have seen them twice in Cleveland. Have all their CDs and Budokan DVD. Try OSI also, worth a listen to.:D

OSI sounds pretty cool. Then again, anything with Portnoy is pretty cool. He totally owns that triple-kick bass drum.
Also, if you're more in to the progressive part of prog metal and enjoy Liquid Tension Experiment, try an album called Apollo by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. It's mind boggling (but rather far out and ambient, which is rather refreshing to a prog metal fan:D)

Agreed ;) . I saw them once here in Mexico. They've come here three times, but I missed the last two :( . They pretty much have a cult of followers around here. I even have a few friends that play in a DT tribute band. Incredible as it sounds, they're almost able to pull it off  (the guitarist and keyboardist are very talented). My favorite DT album is Scenes from a Memory.

Cool thread.

I haven't really kept up with DT. I saw them once at Hard Rock in Orlando. Good show, but sucky venue. All general admission and we had all these people standing in front of us, in the way.

How is their new stuff? The last CD I bought was the three-disc live set they put out in 2001 I think!?

My favorite CD from them is definitely 'Awake,' with 'Images and Words' at a close second. I think it's their tightest sounding album, and I really liked Kevin Moore's keyboard work. Naming a favorite song is tough, but 'Scarred' really stands out for me.

I like "Images and Words" and "Awake" but that's pretty much it. Everything else I've heard has been masturbatory, IMO (although I haven't heard anything from the last album). I dig technically proficient music, but not at the sacrifice of heart & soul. I saw DT in London in '00 and I wasn't too impressed. Again, technically it was up there, but the emotion just wasn't there. I'd go see them again though just to see if I saw them on an off night or something.

Thanks for tipping me in on an awesome sounding band. The few tracks I have listened to remind me of "old" bands like Styx and Queen.

yeah, i see what you mean. listen to Liquid Tension Experiment, it's Dream Theater, but with Tony Levin (IMHO, the greatest bassist ever) on bass guitar, electric upright bass, and chapman stick (http://www.stick.com/), and he adds heart and soul to the music, even though it's all instrumental. also, a lot of the songs on Octivarium (the new album) have much much more emotion.

Yeah, I like Tony's playing too. I especially like his contribution to Peter Gabriel's "So" album.

Geez, that was Gabriel's best album, IMHO. Gotta get it out and listen to it.

Cool. I'll try and check out Liquid Tension Experiment (I *love* instrumentals) as well as Octivarium. I'd love to find another DT album I really enjoyed.

Any of you guys ever hear of these guys? (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002ABT80/002-7941025-0760025?v=glance&n=5174) I heard a song of theirs once and thought it was DT until I heard the vocalist singing. Not quite as guitar-heavy, but there's definitely some influence there, plus the odd time-signatures that DT is known for.
