View Full Version : Have you ever tried to quit MacRumors?

njmac

I've tried to leave temporarily but I always come back within a day or two. There are days that I'm so busy that I don't check ... but first time I sit at the computer I start at MR! I once tried to give it up for lent, that lasted 2 days!

oh well, I'm addicted. How about you?

I tried, these plastic replacement hands are working out quite nice right now. :p

Other than that, I can go away on vacations, never using a computer once for at least two weeks, but the instant I get back, MacRumors is first on my to-do list.

I can't help myself. :)

I've never purposely tried to quit, but it basically turns out that way during the school year. I sometimes go a month without making a single post.

If it's worth anything, I've been a member for 34 months.
I averaged 1 post/day for 33 months.
In the last month since school is out, it's gone up to 1.23 posts/day.
It's not a huge increase, but considering I've been around for so many days, I know I've been posting too much.

I also really don't think the above paragraph makes any sense.:o

Is that a joke?

I suppose in Gary's case it would be too much time on his stubs. :D

Lovely drawing btw, but I pictured it more like Gary holding the camera with his stubs and his leg coming over his shoulder so that he could use his big toe to press the button.

If I don't have web access, then I don't particularly miss MR unless something juicy is happening and I'm curious about how it's going.

When I do have web access, I'm addicted. My fingers just seem to head for the MR trigger automatically...

Kernow

When I do have web access, I'm addicted. My fingers just seem to head for the MR trigger automatically...

Yup - it's automatic. Click on Safari, Cmd-2 for the new posts shortcut (yes I'm that sad) and I'm away.

There have been periods of months or so when I haven't posted or even checked, but that was due to being busy at work and not simply having the time to look in. If I have free time though, MR is always the first site I check, so yes, I guess I'm addicted, and no I'm not going to try and give up.

Piarco

The MR Mafia won't let me;)

I'm the same as Kernow - the only periods I've been away for weeks at a time is due long holidays in regions with not ready to hand internet, work, or upgrading ISP/Mac.
Last time I changed ISP I was away for a month…. MR cold turkey!

Last time I changed ISP I was away for a month…. MR cold turkey!

Weirdly, I found it quite hard to get back into it after I had been away for a while. All conversations had moved on, new people had joined, others had left. It was a little scary and disorienting for a while. :o

I find when I'm busy, or away from home I don't really miss it, and don't feel the need to check it. But if I'm at home, or should be doing something boring *cough*packing*cough* I can cheerfully click new posts all day.

So I wouldn't say I've tried to quit, just that I sometimes I feel like I need to get out there in the big wide world, and then do. :)

During the summer I tend to be on all day while at work and make a lot of posts and read a lot of threads, when I go home for the day I rarely check MacRumors other than the front page.

Weekends I don't post.

During the school year I don't end up having the time to browse due to all the distractions and whatnot. Also school is a busy place.

Actually, I pretty much quit once per year. Come late August, when I have to head back to school, there just is not time for me to post. But I'll be graduating this December, so once I get a real job early 07, I'll be able to post more regularly.

ps. good luck waiting til september with wwdc in there...

oooooh, I forgot about wwdc. I'll have to come back that week :o

I am going to try to quit MR because I spend so much time here ... that can't be healthy - can it? So if I give it a rest by not getting involved in threads that I always feel I have to check on or "New Posts" constantly I could spend my time a little better. Then once I've gotten use to not logging on and going right to subscribed threads/new posts, I can check once a day to catch up, leave comments, ask for help, give help or whatever with out the constant New Post obsession.

Actually, re-reading this reply, I sound kind of lame. I do have a life and when I'm not at my computer, I NEVER think about MR but I constantly find myself here when I'm around my computer and once I start checking threads , I seem to stay here for an hour or two. each time. This is no good.

Pretty much have quit. I remember when I was a lot older and I would post all day, for a while there I was in the top 15 in post count. Have gotten pretty tired of it over the last year or so. I don't enjoy posting help with Mac questions, I answer enough of those in my own time. I just check the main page and read the community and religion/politic discussions. They tend to be the most fun and in depth on the site.

Hey! What about mine?

Just 'coz I didn't post any fancy pants pictures.. <kicks a stone around the backyard in a sulk> ;)

Damn, sorry about that whooleytoo - I honestly missed that one. Yes, you deserve just as much credit (if not more! :D) for that one as well. My sincerest apologies. ;)

I decided to quit yesterday night.

How am I doing?

NO! I get allnews from AppleInsider.

That's not news. That's educated, high probability guessing. ;)

"In OS 10.5, the Finder may see some changes, possibly tabs! iCal may also see a change." Wow, who would have thought? ;)

Tried but couldn't do it.

I do spend more time at another forum than here now (I feel cheap and sleezzzy), it runs with my time and interest. Although I don't post much anymore, hardly a day goes by without a quick checkin the community forum.

Now that it is 11pm and the family is asleep, guess I will get the hint!
G'nite.

I have honestly tried, but the only thing that will reduce my usage is an office job. I work at home alone all day and this place is the only "human" contact I get.

I know that feeling. When I worked at home doing advertising materials for my job, I was always dropping in on MR. :)

Maybe I should get one of those robotic dogs. My cat just sleeps all day and Mithy is logged off all the time. :D

Awesome reference! I wonder how many people here actually get that...I got it. I'm a Prisoner fan from way back.

I never formally quit MacAddict forums, I just lost interest a few years back, when there was a period where argumentative libertarians seemed to be running the political forum. And I did formally quit another when one or two of the members got way too sarcastic with me, and the mods did nothing about it.

Thankfully, this place is very well-moderated. That's not a kiss-up, that's just my experience. I've never once yet felt the urge to quit.

Do you people see this man's dedication to MacRumours? You guys talk about quitting, while MJ is adaptive and incorporates it into his tight schedule. This man will even drive and post. ;)

Great MR member. Just don't be in the car with him if you know what's good for you.

i do go on vacation...etc
somehow am not able to have 'web access'
and seem to be fine

i'll hunt down a computer/net access for e-mail
but will generally wait for macrumors until i have time to do it

i just got back from a week long 'summer camp'
checked my e-mail once a day
and did pop on MR once - just the basic front page- to see what new things had happend
was excited about the software upgrades...etc
but then quickly unplugged and went back to camp

I'l be temporarily quitting in a couple weeks when I go away on a 3-week vacation. Other than that though, nah, I'm here for a while, no plans on quitting. ;)

Heck, even while I'm away I'll probably find time to pop on once or twice... :o

Don't try it.

I'm trying to quit right now (for the day that is, not permanently :p ) as I've got an important report to write before 5pm, but even though the forums are slow at this time, I'm still hitting new posts every couple of minutes.

If your MR experience has:
• Helped you with technical questions and answers
• Taught you etiquette in how to post
• Introduced you to how and what other cultures think
• Provided community interaction and forum friendships
• Ever made you laugh
• Given you insight and information on any topic or issue
• Enhanced or improved your communicative abilities
then why would you want to try and quit a positive thing?

Maybe I’m missing the underlying premise….that participation in MR forums is a negative thing? How so, if so?

I admit I've thought about it, but have never been able to stay away for longer than a few days. Lately, I've been getting on less and less, but that's mainly due to the fact that all I want to do these days is lay down, pee, and sleep. Posting on MR when you're dealing with morning sickness and various pregnancy symptoms just doesn't rank high up there on the list of priorities I'm sorry to say. Today's been a fairly good day with only moderate symptoms so that's why I'm here right now. :D
