View Full Version : Rise of Nations Gold keeps crashing...help plz?

It used to stop only about 5% of the time and usually about 45 mins into a game. Now I can't get two minutes into a game before it stops. I tried to reinstall but that didn't help, in fact it wouldn't let me install into my apps folder, I had to pick another.

I've sent all the reports to Apple but I'm not sure if that helps or not. I have a quite lengthy crash report that I can post if it helps.

Game is 100% original and not a copy.

So how is it fixed? They are still selling the game for $50 so I would only think it should work.

Mine too crashes on 10.4.7 as soon as you push a button. I can get around it by going on Conquer the World campaigns but it crashes 2 mins later anyway.

MacSoft haven't released a single patch for this game since they released it. We need one now!

I saw on apple's boards that the problem doesn't lie with 10.4.7 update, but rather with the quicktime 7.1.2 update, which came around the same time.

Someone said they reverted to an older version, and got it to work. Although I was skeptical, I decided to give it a try, since apparently you can download an installer that removes quicktime 7.0.2+ (Including 7.1.2) and reverts to 7.0.1. This is an official apple reinstaller, so it seemed legit enough to give it a shot.

I did it, restarted, and installed 7.0.4, which is the latest version other than 7.1.2 I could find. Then I restarted again, loaded up rise of nations, and guess what. It worked. Google around for the reverter, or go to apple's support website, you should find it.

You genius! Here's the links.

1) Quicktime 7 reinstaller (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/quicktime701reinstaller.html)

Ok, I downloaded the reinstaller and when I go to actually install it I get this message:

"You cannot install this software on this volume. This disk is dimmed because it does not contain an appropriate version of Quicktime."

I have 7.1.2, most everyone else seems to be getting it to work. What am I doing wrong?

They are working on a patch.

Hi,

We're working on a solution to this recent problem. The information gathered so far indicates that the problem has to do with Apple's latest Quicktime update (7.1.2). It actually crashes when the game calls it, subsequently taking the game with it as well. As soon as I have a solution available, I'll post it on our website, http://www.macsoftgames.com.

In the meantime, the best workaround is to download and run the Quicktime 7.0.1 “reinstaller” located on Apple’s download page. That will get you back into the game while we figure out a more permanent solution. Also, feel free to reinstall any Quicktime update up to version 7.1.1. Just don’t install 7.1.2.

I can't play the game either. It will crash randomly at different points, sometimes as soon as I open it, but usually while I'm navigating the main menu. I can't even start a new game. This is really pissing me off, you spend your money on a game to have it not be playable. There seems to be no possible way to get my quicktime version 7.1.2 back to an earlier version unless you are running OS 10.3.9.

Does anyone know how to successfully uninstall quicktime? I tried deleting all of the files associated with quicktime, but when trying to install an older version of quicktime it would still detect 7.1.2 somehow not letting me install a previous version.

I just bought this game a week ago from the Apple Store. Now I can't even play it, and I'm not going to downgrade QuickTime because of a unsurprisingly malfunctioning Microsoft product.

Glad I found this! I was breaking my head with this problem. Removing prefrences, deleting modded ini files, and finally re-installing the game (along with all my settings  ) to no avail.

I think I'll just wait a little to see what happens, but it sucks hoover style.

Hi folks,

Yes indeed I had the same situation with RoN Gold, moving from 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 and QT 7.1.2. I wrote to Macsoft support and got the same answer. They are working on it...! It's great that Macsoft are working on it, but sadly they are notoriously slow workers. I know pretty much for a fact ;) that they are working on Age of Empires III for Mac, but try and find it on their site! I personally will wait for a bit to see if they post any new patches for the game. But it may well be a long wait...

Well, it's not a perfect solution, but I was having the same problem as Unsung. I could not use the Quicktime reinstaller, because it does not work with Tiger.

So, in case you haven't thought of this, and if you've got time on your hands, try reinstalling Tiger. I did this, my version came with QT 7.0. There's a custom install that will just rewrite the system software, while keeping your applications, etc.

That did the trick. It just took awhile, at least an hour.

I don't think the patch fixed much. About 45 minutes into a game it crashed, I was too pissed to look at the report. Anybody else having issues with the patch? I changed no settings, just downloaded the patch and started playing, before the patch I couldn't get past the main screen, bit of an improvement. So yeah, ideas suggestions etc would be most appreciated.
Thank you

I've said it once, I'll say it again... Checked Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup is at 44100.0 Hz?

I checked all of that, midi is set to 44100 hz. It may have been a conflict with iTunes cause I had that going while I was playing. Closed iTunes and tried again this time I saved every 15 minutes, had no problems.

Thank you
Thads

If the patch doesn' work, just re-install it. If it still crashes erase all your prefs and library stuff related to the game. Then re-install it for a 2nd time. Or trash prefs/library stuff and re-install... whatever i'm talkin out of my ass at the moment.

Checked Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup is at 44100.0 Hz?

I get the above message when starting RoN, on an Intel iMac with Tiger 10.4.7. However, when I run Audio MIDI Setup, the Audio Output side says
Output is not supported

So how do I effect the desired setting? Any ideas?

btw: when I uninstalled QT7.1.2 to reinstall QT7.0.1, it wiped out the Finder (I think this is an Intel incompatibility).

Now to try reinstalling QT7.0 from the Tiger install disc.
