I'm going to keep the Radiohead one going and say Kid A.
Absolutely unique and incredible. No other words to describe it.
David Crowder Band - Illuminate
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Postal Service - Give Up
A lot of scores from movies and random orchastrated pieces. There's something to be said for truly impacting music that doesn't have a single lyric or voice.

From Post The 10 Albums that changed your life... (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=118032)
I don't think there are 10 albums that really changed my life... but a few had quite an impact...
In 1979 my father was in England and brought back London Calling by The Clash and The Wall by Pink Floyd. I was 9 years old and the musical world changed forever... fast forward 3 years, to 1982 and I was on holiday in London and bought myself The Gift by The Jam and Anthem by Toyah.
Songs from those albums formed much of my musical taste, forever... and I still play songs from at least one of those albums every single day...

'Life-changing' is going a bit far, but five that have set me off on a protracted musical binge would certainly include:
Dark Side Of The Moon (Pink Floyd)
Parallel Lines (Blondie)
Organisation (Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark)
And from after most of you were probably born :o
The Joshua Tree (U2)
Play (Moby)

How exactly does an album change your life?
The only thing I can think is that you spend money that you don't have, go into debt, and the bank comes to take everything away. :D
i'd say that a lot of classical music has had a profound effect on me. Some that I played on the piano, others that I played on the stereo. I think the greatest thing it did was to give me better concentration, which was certainly life-changing.
Beethoven, Bach, and Chopin were my good both ways. Artur Rubenstein and Claudio Arrau were both great pianists. Composers Berlioz, Ravel, and Stravinsky also are favourites. I couldn't name one orchestra but Regine Crespin is quite a great singer.
In other genres, it's the artists and those would be Patti Labelle, The Temptations, Natalie Cole, Marvin Gaye, Carly Simon, and Matthew Jordan.

How exactly does an album change your life?
I feel sorry for you that you have to ask that.
Anyways here we go:
1)Discovered this compilation in early high school. Pretty much shaped my musical taste for the remainder of high school
http://www.hopelessrecords.com/images/store/products/HR614.jpg
2)I think I listened to this album every day for about 3-4 months when I first got it. NIN is still my favorite band
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000001Y5Z.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
3)Rape Me was the first song I was able to play on guitar when my brain and my fingers actually "clicked" and I could understand guitar. You know when you first pick up an instrument and it's a foreign object and you can't figure out how anyone can communicate with it?
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000003TAR.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
4)I'm pretty sure this is the first album I ever bought with my own money. Sure I had some CD's before that I'd gotten as gifts and such, but this was the first one I bought
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000001IPL.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg
5)This is the album that eventually lead me to Nirvana via "Smells like Nirvana". Laugh if you want, this guys a genius

Ok stuff that shaped my life, here we go
1.) Creed - My Own Prison
Inspired me to get a guitar and start playing. Since then I have been playing for almost 8 years! Woo hoo!
2.) Metallica - Metallica (The Black Album)
Got me into the whole Metal genre, also changed my style of playing guitar.
3.) Iced Earth - The Dark Saga
Boy do I worship this band. I first heard them about six years ago and I have not stopped listening to their albums. Also led me to meet a few people who like them as well and we jammed for a while. Was great fun. I try to emulate them on my guitar.
4.) Nightwish - Once
Got me into liking that style of music as well. I met a nice lady friend who could sing  :D Need I say more?
5.) Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Favorite album of theirs. My fascination with them led me to meet a friend who also enjoys that style of music. We still jam today. We are trying to organize a band, but we can't seem to find a drummer. Our bass player is a drunk/pot head and doesn't want to take things seriously.

5. Slick Rick-The Great Adventures of Slick Rick

My transition from lame music to amazing music happened in two stages.
1. For Squirrels - Example
2. Subrosa - Never bet the Devil Your Head
3. bloom. - Veda Hubbell
this was all in the mid/late 90s.
Then I started to burn out and really had nothing to listen to anymore.. my roommate told me how great this band Coldplay was (this was in 2000 and I had never heard of them and most people I knew hadn't either). I told him I wasn't into it when he had me take a listen.. but then.. in 2001 enter.. Grandaddy
4. Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump
This lead me to
5. Radiohead - The Bends
From there it was of course Ok Computer (after I got used to Radiohead and felt comfortable with their guitar rock) and then to Kid A/Amnesiace. At this time I got into Coldplay as well.. but it was those 5 that really prepped me for what I listen to now.

1. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Need I say anything else? This album changed my views on Hip Hop.
2. Sabac Red - Sabacolypse
After you listen to this album you won't be the same. With Necro on production, you know the beats are going to be top notch, but Sabac is sick on this album, rapping about everything from stopping corrupt police to organizing to AIDs. He is revolutionary, nobody is doing what he is doing. An album that will open your eyes.
3. Necro - I Need Drugs
If I had never listened to Your F***in' Head Split, I would have never gotten into the best form of Hip Hop, Death Rap.
4. Jedi Mind Tricks - Violent By Design
Classic, every song on here is five star. Vinnie Paz rips **** up, and Stoupe is a genius. Another album that got me into Hip Hop.
5. Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 2
Great politcal album with great beats. Better than Vol. 1 as a whole album. Another album that will open your eyes on the government and racism.

Interestingly enough, my life changing albums have changed since this waas first posted. So here is the first of probably many edits:
This is NOT in order because I can't decide. Seriously, I've sat here for 10 minutes trying to decide an order and I can't. Anyway, here it is:
Punk-O-Rama 5 and 7 (they have to count as one. Please!)
Nevermind, Nirvana
Californication, RHCP
The Battle of Los Angeles, RATM (Replacing The Dungeon Master's Guide, by DieselBoy)
Oh Inverted World, The Shins (Replacing I am the Movie by MCS)

1) GREEN DAY - NIMROD
This album was completely different to what i had ever heard before. Redundant being my favourite track. It contains great lyrics to great melodies the whole album is spectacular. It sort of reminds me of early beatles stuff like nowhere man mixed with buzzcocks
2) THE LIVING END - ROLL ON
Once again, like nothing i'd ever heard before. This album is spectacular. The upright bass is so fitting with the style of the album. The whole feel is spectacular. The first album I actually owned. It was a gift one christmas from my parents.
3) WEEZER - PINKERTON
The first album i bought with my own money. it still has the great melodies like from the first album but its more edgy and it has more a feel. you feel fore rivers. although i would have loved to have seen songs from the black hole. this album is the best weezer album, i love it.
4) PIXIES - DOOLITTLE
The first Pixies album i bought, my brother bought Surfa Rosa the same day and then I bought Bossonova the next day. Doolittle is great. I had nothing like it before. It was screams but great melodies and quite verses loud choruses. the way they could have like such a calm tune like wave of mutalation and sing about it then scream. and frank blacks lyrics are great i have heard nothing like it before.
5) ASH - FREE ALL ANGELS
I don't know what it is about this album but its so great i remember just listening to it and just thinking it was so great it would lift me up. I would spend hours singing along and wasting all my energy to this album.

The albums that changed my life. And boy did they change it!
1. KISS Symphony (Alive IV)
Ahh, the first taste of KISS. I was hooked from then on. About two years ago I downloaded a few tracks from the album offa iTunes, then I downloaded all of their albums lol. KISS with a symphony is CLASSIC, much like metallica and Collective Soul did. I'm a fan for symphony concerts!!! But no really, KISS is and always will be the best band. YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU GOT THE BEST! THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD, KISSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
2. Metallica - Metallica (The Black Album)
My brother got this album before I was born, and even though it's too scratched to play, I still have it. Wow. People hated Metallica for this album, I love them for it. I think speed metal is a buncha trash. But this on the other hand, this is awesome. It has 80s metal mized in with a little bit of Metallica's own unique style. Amazing.
3. RHCP - Califnornication
My grandma bought me this at Costco when I asked. (When I was 7 :D ) Little did I know, it had mofo quite a few times on the CD. haha. I remember sitting on the couch and saying "LOOK DAD! IT ONLY SaYS THAT WORD 11 TIMES IN THE WHOLE ALBUM!!!" Later, they explained, awkwardly, what it meant. I didn't care if they took it away from me. I found it on top of the fridge and that started my RHCP frenzy! lol
4. Motley Crue - Red, White and Crue
Man, what can I say to a Motley Crue album. I'm so glad tht they came out with this compilation because I never would've listened to them otherwise.I hated 80s hair metal. HATED it. But then Motley Crue re-came out and I was hooked. Bought a few tracks offa iTunes, then downloaded their whole collection. lol I love em. And now I love 80s hair metal. My favorite genre by far!
The biggest life changer though is this one... WOW....
5. Eagles - Hell Freezes Over
If you guys believe me, I remember wathing this on TV when I was 2. 1994. When it first came out lol. I remember my dad coming and getting me out of my crib and taking me into the living room to watch this. I was hooked. The eagles have rocked my world for 12 years now, and man do they rock! I sae 'em in concert. and while their stage show isn't NEEEEARLY what a KISS show is, they are and always will be my biggest influence. *tear...*
There ya have it! Will Smith's life! (That actually is my name - grandpas name was Bill, they named me after him)

Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
The album that made me want to start listening to music. Up until then, I hadn't been exposed to music I could relate to. It was the perfect album for that time in my life.
Elliott Smith - From a Basement on a Hill
Why was this album so influential? It led me to more of Elliott Smith's stuff. I now have every full length CD and a lot of hisi B-sides. Every song is amazing... this guy is a major contributor to me picking up guitar, and "Twilight" is the first song I ever learned all the way through on the guitar.
Damien Rice - O
Amazing CD... gets me through bad days (along with Elliott). Cheers' Darlin' hit close to home when I first heard it... still does
Those are the three major ones right now... really the only ones that deserve to be on the life-changing list. I'm still young and impressionable, though, so this list is bound to change.

In no particular order,
1) The Doors by The Doors: Introduced me to classic rock in general. all just because i wanted to hear that one song i recognized from Apocalypse Now, "The End"
2) Gladiator OST: Actually my first cd. Before that I didnt really listen to music. Also introduced me to the great Hans Zimmer.
3) Substance by New Order: got me into 80s music which I'd mostly ignored before.
4) Piano Concertos by Rachmaninov: spurred my interest in classical music in general
5) War by U2: a great album that made me fall in love with U2

Aug 9, 2006, 05:55 AM
In no order:
1) The Beatles: Revolver. I grew with 3 main musical influences; Neil Diamond (Mum), the Classics & The Beatles (both thanks to my Dad). This album never ages for me, not only does it remind me of a simpler time in my life, but the songs sound as good as they did when I first heard them. Just a shame my kid brother wiped out my Dads entire original Beatles LP's by using them as fribees:mad:
2) Pearl Jam: 10. Brilliant for many reasons. Never liked Nirvana (!) and Pearl Jam were more accessible. Completely different to my music tastes back then, and many a time coming back from the pub singing "Alive" :D
3) Prodigy: Music for the Jilted Generation. I've traditionally always been about dance music, and have been a fan of the Prodigy since "Where Evil Lurks". This album took dance music in a completely different direction. Just brilliant.
4) Cream: Live. Not the Eric Clapton group, but a compliation album from Liverpools Superclub back in the haydays of 1994. Soundtrack to my first year at Uni. Still the album I whack on loud if I'm having a Big Night Out.
5) Beethoven Symphony No. 9, Sir Colin Davis. Musical perfection. I'm leaving it at that.

In no particular order:
Aphex Twin: Drukqs
The most ecclectic offering from a pioneer in electronic music, Richard D. James. A beautiful two disc album, with ambient prepared piano, and moments of spine tingling genius as perfectly arranged electronic blips, bleeps and future sounds collide with intense drums and bass, creating a mathematical soundscape like nothing you've heard before.
Radiohead: OK Computer (Good to see so many votes for this)
A solemn and tradgic album that has always given me hope and filled me with spirit. Beautiful!
Biffy Clyro: The Vertigo Of Bliss
A little known trio from Scotland, a heartwarming and gutwrenching offering, full of modesty and passion!
Kyuss: Sky Valley (AKA 'Welcome To Sky Valley')
This is their middle album out of the 3 worth mentioning. ('Blues for the Red Sun', '...And the Circus Leaves Town') Thick, downtuned riffs and heavy drums carve their way through an intense physcadelic landscape, whilst a John Garcia leads you away with his hypnotic voice.
Death From Above 1979: You're A Woman. I'm A Machine.
Fast, hard, dirty rock and roll. Two guys, bass and drums/vox, beating their instruments into oblivion, with disco beats and stoner riffs.
Rich.

No particular order:
Bright Eyes -- Fevers and Mirrors
This album got me into Bright Eyes and the world of Conor Oberst. Even though people label it as "emo" and whatnot, I don't care. It's great music, great lyrics and it really enhances whatever mood I am in.
Elliott Smith - Self Titled
Again, like above this introduced me to Elliott Smith. I absolutely love his sound, lyrics and can calm down from whatever is stressing me out by playing this album.
Weezer - Blue Album
Not my favorite Weezer CD, but it got me into the band. Helped me get through my teen years, established my style, attitude and whatnot. Also lead me to get introduced into other good music.
Dashboard Confessional - The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most
I appreciate this CD because it is essentially raw emotion, and reminds me of my first true 'love', before everything ended up blowing up a year later. Listening to any DC really brings back terrible memories, and will have a huge effect on me.
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
Toss up between GIve Up, Plans and this CD. Ultimately this CD is a great disc to just listen to while walking around and admiring everything. I love how this makes me feel, and it is very upbeat.
If you guys don't agree with my musical choices, or think that the music is simply bad, please don't flame. Thanks for hearing me out :)

Albums that changed my musical direction or otherwise broadened my horizons in life, in order of their discovery by me:
Rush, Signals
New Order, Brotherhood
Steel Pole Bath Tub, Tulip

Belle & Sebastian, If You're Feeling Sinister
The honorable mentions list would be very long indeed, but I think the first four best encapsulate the sea changes in my musical tastes over that time period. My tastes are so eclectic now, I find it hard to believe someone will come along and alter my consciousness like that again, but... who knows?

How exactly does an album change your life?
It is funny how people see music differently...;)
For me - It is almost as if my life has been defined by the records I have discovered or been listening to at any given time. Science may say that smell is the sense most closely linked to memory, but for me it is music. And after that grandiose introduction, my 5 :
The Beatles - 'Red' hits record - The 1st record I ever bought with my own money, and well what can you say about that collection? Covers so many bases.
The Doors - Absolutely Live - my first hint that rock could be subversive, ' Mom, I want to AHAGHAGHAGHA you!! Lizard King ? I was 10...
The Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime - The record that made me realize that popularity has nothing to do with 'quality'.
Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill - The soundtrack to my high school years. Nothing to do with music, just living. The 'Boys evolution since puts them on the list.
The Dirtbombs - Ultraglide in Black - This record reminded me just how fun music can be. And for that, I will always love it. And Mick Collins.
This list is so abbreviated, personally I have about 40 or more records that I could name that had a HUGE influence me, but I tried to name 5 that made a change in my life. It has nothing to do with favorite bands, those are another list/thread.

sorry I cheated with 6:
Nirvana - Nevermind
Kurt Cobain (in a weird and twisted way) was my idol growing up and someone I looked up to as a person who understood what it was like to be a teenager. I'm not afraid to say I cried when I found out he killed himself because I felt like I lost a brother.
Pearl Jam - Ten
Two reasons: Black and Jeremy. Couldn't have written how I felt about life and my problems any better than in those two songs.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
Jimi Hendrix is the greatest musician that will ever live. His talent is just unbelievable. Way ahead of his time, and he left the world way too soon.
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
One of the best albums of the 90s...musically, just brilliant. (Evil Empire was as well.)
Linkin Park - Meteora
Hybrid Theory was great - Meteora blew the doors off. Phenominal
Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
Got me into indie music. I listen to Modest Mouse probably the most now out of any band around. Every single one of their albums is excellent.
Other noteworthy exemptions:
The Doors - The Best Of The Doors
The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Depeche Mode - Violator
Slipknot - Slipknot
Run-DMC - Raising Hell
Beastie Boys - License To Ill
Beck - Mellow Gold
The Cure - Disintegration
Breaking Benjamin - We Are Not Alone
Papa Roach - Infest
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism
Modest Mouse (every other album of theirs)
My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
I've got too many others I could mention so I'm gonna cut it short now. :)

Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
This album has it all. Its got some rockin songs, some really mellow ones, and some long drawn out beautiful ones. 64 minutes of greatness. Recommended songs: "Lucky Denver Mint", "Goodbye Sky Harbor"
Weezer - Pinkerton
When I heard this album I was just starting to branch away from punk type music and when I heard all the different little layers on this CD, I fell in love with it. I still hear stuff in it I've never heard before. Its probably one of the most lyrically honest albums I have ever heard. Recommended songs: "Across the Sea", "El Scorcho"
The Get Up Kids - On a Wire
When I first started getting into mellower music that wasn't really punk oriented, I got really into this album. I miss these guys. I wish I could have gone to their last show. Recommended songs: "Overdue", "Walking on a Wire"
Lifetime - Jersey's Best Dancers
This album salvaged my waning interest in punk rock. I got so sick of bands with political agendas and what not, and then I found these guys. I was so disappointed that they broke up long before I got into them, but they are back together and they've got an album coming out in the next few months.
Recommended songs: "Theme Song For a New Brunswick Basement Show", "25 Cent Giraffes"
Less Than Jake - Losing Streak
Oh man. This album got me through high school. My favorite ska/punk album ever. Recommended songs: "Lockdown", "Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts"
Honorable Mentions:
the Descendents - I Don't Want to Grow Up
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
Troy Hutson - Of Women and Whiskey (local kid from Wichita KS)
The Clash - London Calling
Ozma - Rock and Roll Part 3

No set order and liable to change without warning. Read through previous posts and saw some fine top fives/sixes/sevens.
Psychedelic Furs: Forever Now - Comming of age and all that, used to think I was so cool listening to that. Actually had it on at the weekend again.
The Jam: All Mod Cons - For my angry at everything stage.
The Smiths: Hatful of Hollow - For my angry at everything but with a flower in my pocket stage
REM: Green - I'm mellow but inquisitive now
Harmonica Slim: You Can't Kill a Pig - Guess I'm older now
Help there are about 47 others I could go with, I'm off to find some old CD's.

I wouldn't say they changed my life, but these 5 albums were a big part of my rock n' roll youth. In no particular order for me as well...
Queen - A Night at the Opera (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=27243429&id=27243381&s=143441)
What can you say? This album was one of the greatest. Freddie, Brian, Roger and John at their best. Saw them live a couple of times. Great rock show.
Yes - Yessongs (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=602643&id=602656&s=143441)
I actually got an 'A' in a college course titled "History of Rock and Roll" by writing a paper on Yes. Great band and superb live album. One of the best of all time, IMHO. Saw them twice. Once live and once 'in the round'. Rick Wakeman kicked ass on the keyboards.
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_Salad_Surgery)
I used to blast this album. Karn Evil 9. Again, what can you say? Incredible. Never got to see these guys live, but my older sister did. I remember her laying on the couch the next day in pain and nearly deaf. Not sure if the pain was from the volume or the drugs that I'm sure were in abundance :p
Van Halen - Van Halen (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=6725452&id=6725322&s=143441)
The essence of rock and roll for me back in the day. Great show live. David Lee Roth getting airborne and Eddie knocking over stacks of speakers. This album is a classic for sure.
Boston - Boston (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=929999&id=544486&s=143441)
Brings back memories of my high school days playing air guitar :D Saw a great live show with Boston, Black Sabbath, Van Halen and Sammy Hagar at Aneheim stadium way back in '78.

This one's a hard one ...
Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes (especially the title track)
Cowboy Junkies - Black-Eyed Man
Paul Kelly - ...nothing but a dream
Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses
R.E.M. - Out of Time (is there a more perfect song than 'Country Feedback?)
Special thanks has to go to the Until the End of the World soundtrack, but it just misses the mark.

Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feet
This is the only album that I can honestly say changed my life. I was about 15, and my mom came home with this album out of the blue. I had never heard them before but when I put it in my cd player I listened to it six times in a row. Whenever I've had a bad day or am at a creative roadblock I put on CTD and everything's better. :)
The only other album that has had an influence on me would have to be:
Nirvana - Nevermind
Unfortunately I didn't start listening to this until about four months before Kurt Cobain's death.
Other favorites:
Collective Soul
Foo Fighters
Nickelback
Creed

Young Dubliners

Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - Traffic
Bird of Fire - Mahavishnu Orchestra
Toulouse Street - Doobie Brothers
Fragile - Yes
Plastic Ono Band - John Lennon
Dire Straits - Dire Straits
Desperado - Eagles

Red Headed Stranger - Willie Nelson
Reggata de Blanc - Police
Combat Rock - Clash
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Who's Next - The Who
Five Leaves Left - Nick Drake

Romantic Warrior - Return to Forever
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Desire - Bob Dylan
Striking it Rich - Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks
Individual Choice - Jean-luc Ponty
Bill Nelson - Quit Dreaming
Harvest Moon - Neil Young
Security - Peter Gabriel
Elegant Gypsy - Al DiMeola
Fumbling Through Ecstacy - Sarah Maclachlan
Joshua Tree - U2
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood
Nirvana - Unplugged
There were probably many other albums that significantly made an impact on my life, but definately the listed ones all had the effect of signposting various eras. The funny thing is, most of the music I listen to (over the last 5 years) has been individual tracks not albums...

In no particular order,
1) The Doors by The Doors: Introduced me to classic rock in general. all just because i wanted to hear that one song i recognized from Apocalypse Now, "The End"
Led to many great things for me too, that self-titled debut.
I remember that on the soundtrack to the Oliver Stone biopic about the Doors, there was this weird song called "Heroin" by this band called The Velvet Underground; that led to a whole other obsession for me over them and Lou Reed.

Yes, 'OK Computer' is a good album, bit it didn't have the same affect on me as when I first heard 'The Bends.'
Going by the title of this thread, back in 1995 'The Bends' was the right album at the time. In my 'formative' teenage years, and before Radiohead became indie superstars, they were my own little 'musical secret' whilst everyone else at school was into Nirvana and Oasis. And we all know that when you're young you don't want anyone else listening to 'your' music!

Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking (Importance: perfect teen angst album. Don't listen to it much now, but got me through my college years)
Madonna - The Immaculate Collection (O.K., I know this is a Greatest Hits album, but I don't think I'm alone in discovering Madonna at a later age through this album) (importance: moved away from grunge and towards dance music in my post-collegiate days)
New Order - Substance (O.K., only 2 new songs on this album, but see same rationale as above) (importance: perfect mix of pop and lovesick teen angst, listened to it regularly from high school through my young adulthood)
Guns 'n Roses: Appetite for Destruction (Heavy metal with a punk attitude. It's easy to forget now how dramatically this album was a departure from the relatively soulless Motley Crue/Poison/Def Leppard heavy metal that came before it)
De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising (importance: this is when I really started listening to hip-hop. I miss intelligent hip-hop like De La Soul and Public Enemy)

But then again, OK Computer captured kind a global end-of-millenium angst that transcended a particular age. For example, I was in my early 20's and already working when OK Computer came out - and I thought THAT was the right album at the right time. Not that there's ANY comparison musically, but I would put Zooropa by U2 in the same "perfect millenial angst" category.
P.S. I don't think Radiohead was exactly a "secret" before OK Computer. I mean, "Creep" was HUUUUUUUUGE hit on MTV which is as mainstream as you can get...

"Fake Plastic Trees" was on the soundtrack to "Clueless" though, so Radiohead wasn't completely off the radar :) But I agree, it was really OK computer when they exploded into the mainstream consciousness. It's interesting how this has happened to a fair number of "alternative" bands in the last couple of decades: they have one or two notable hits, and then they go supernova:
R.E.M.: "The One I Love" went Top 10,then their next album went supernova
Depeche Mode: "Strangelove" went Top 40, then their next album went supernova
Metallica: "One" went top 40, then their next album went supernova (o.k. I know Metallica isn't the standard "alternative" band, but believe me, they were definitely *not* mainstream before)
The Cure: "Just Like Heaven" was top 40, then their next album went supernova
Oh, this reminds me of 2 albums I overlooked in my Top 5:
Depeche Mode - Violator
The Cure - Disintegration
Wow, yeah, those 2 were HUGE in my college years

1. Counting Crows - This Desert Life
http://www.zero.co.nz/music/images/Counting%20Crows%20-%20This%20Desert%20Life.jpg
The best week of my life ever was the time I spent at Kilve Court, a residential centre in Kilve, near Bridgwater earlier this year. I went there on a music course and met my best friends while I was there. On the way there, I listened to this album, while I was there, I listened to this album a number of times through, and on the way back, I listened to it again. The mood this album puts me in always takes me back to the time I spent there, which is why, if I had to choose one album from my CD collection, it would be this one. As of yet, I haven't heard an album which has the same kind of climax as this one. Dark Side of the Moon is great, but still doesn't come close to this one IMHO. Every track off this album is absolutely fantastic, not a single song that I don't like to listen to, but what's also great is how it gels as an album.
The first song I heard off this album was 'colorblind', which is still one of my all time favourite songs.
2. Counting Crows - August & Everything After
http://www.zero.co.nz/music/images/Counting%20Crows%20-%20August%20and%20Everything%20After.jpg
Counting Crows fans will say this album is better than This Desert Life, but I prefer the other. Still a great album. 'Mr Jones' is a classic, and possibly my favourite from this album. Technically, a great recording, but IMO not as good as This Desert Life. One of the things they got perfect on This Desert Life was a capturing the performance of the musicians perfectly on a recording medium.
3. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On?
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00007FOMP.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
The greatest soul album ever? I would say so. The story behind it, how Motown nearly didn't release it, until they released the single of the first track, which went straight to number one. The emotion and feeling in Gaye's voice is incredible, and the arrangements and quality of the songs is amazing. Fantastic lyrics as well.
4. Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up The Girl
http://static.last.fm/coverart/300x300/2024754.jpg
The first song I heard off this album is a legend of a song, 'Iris'. They write fantastic songs, of which there are a lot of on this album. 'Black Balloon' and 'Slide' are also fantastic songs.
5. Van Morrison - Enlightenment
http://www.christoftrepczyk.de/bilder/mor20.jpg
Again, this album always takes me back to the time I spent at the music course at Kilve. 'In The Days Before Rock N Roll' is one of my all time favourite songs, and again, this album works fantastically as a whole album. One of the best recordings made IMO, and really well constructed and performed songs.
So there you have it, my top 5 albums which changed my life, if you could put it that way...

Rage Against The Machine (self titled) - I was 12 Years old when I heard them for the first time, completely blew my mind off, lyrics, instruments, everything, brutal and real.
Portishead (Both Albums) - No words for these guys, fantastic composers, too bad they stopped after the second album.
Tool (Aenema) - Tool is fantastic, it's hard to get it, but once you do, you can't ever go back :)
Lamb Of God (Ashes Of The Wake) - Best metal album I've heard in a while, completely "out of the box" riffs and drum playing, excelent musicians.
Pink Floyd (The Wall) - This album really influenced me when I was a teenager and really is a journey to listen to it.
a lot of different music genres I know, I'm an open minded person :)

1. Prince & the Revolution: Purple Rain - This CD had all the angst, alienation and separation I was feeling from my family inside it's songs. Especially "When Doves Cry," of course. It helped forge who I was to become as an individual growing up as a teenager in the 80's. It had a phenomenal impact on my life. This was the single most important CD in my life.

The State by Nickelback is the only one that really "changed" my life to the degree it did. It made me interested in Nickelback enough to get their next CD and go to a concert. At the concert they blew me away and I now run the Official Nickelback Forum.
As far as others, Metallica's black album really pushed me to become a lot better at guitar.
Queen's Greatest Hits album made me really want to be able to sing
Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits taught me it was okay if I wasn't able to.

OK, I tried to take the question seriously and not just pick my favorite albums (it’s hard to resist that urge), but instead pick the ones that actually, literally, CHANGED my life in some way. Here goes:
THE BEATLES – ‘SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND’
Even as a wee lad, I was really into music – but all I had to listen to was my parents’ vinyl records. My mother had a fondness for Neil Diamond, but even then he was a bit too cheesey for me. Simon & Garfunkel were favorites of theirs too, but while their music was pleasant, it was just too “soft” for my tastes. They had a bunch of other albums from other artists that I don’t even remember, they were so bad. But ‘SGT. PEPPER’S was the only thing that stood out for me, as it felt the most modern and progressive. In a way, I think it was the most influential album for me, as I’ve been a fanatic of British bands ever since. (see #2-4). If it hadn’t been in my house, my life would have taken a much different turn, and I’d probably be listening to the cheesey Top 40 stuff that my friends were listening to at the time. Interestingly, I haven't really listened to the Beatles much in over 20 years until just this past month and the 'LOVE' album.
ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN – ‘OCEAN RAIN’
This album made me gay. Ok, let me explain. There’s nothing remotely gay about the band or this album’s music – but it was a favorite of my best friend’s older brother, and I was obsessed with him, and didn’t know why. They were also another band from Liverpool, and that intrigued me. I listened to this album religiously in order to get some sort of clue about my obsession, but it was my other best friend, a girl, who figured it out for me: she deduced I was gay, and forced me to come out to her at 14. It was another five years (see #5) until most of the other people in my life knew this, but it certainly made the next few years of my life quite… interesting.
So ok, it didn’t make me gay (I was born that way, of course!), but OCEAN RAIN was certainly the first step in me becoming comfortable with my sexuality.
TEARS FOR FEARS – ‘THE HURTING’
The two best friends mentioned above died within ten days of each other, the second death being a suicide – all when I was still only 14. Immediately after, my family and I moved out of NYC and back to a place I never wanted to be again: Los Angeles. Needless to say, I was pretty depressed. ‘THE HURTING,’ an album that I discovered after ‘SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR’ became huge, was the only thing that stopped, well… the hurting. This album didn’t just change my life, it saved it.
THE SMITHS – ‘STRANGEWAYS HERE WE COME’
The first Smiths album I actually bought myself turned out to be their last, and I listened to it over and over until the tape cassette (remember those?) literally fell apart. This resulted in my life-long love for Morrissey, and was probably the next biggest influence (after ‘SGT. PEPPER’S) on shaping my musical choices for pretty much the next two decades. Wow, has it really been that long? When you ask me a “Stranded on a desert island” type of question, the music I would always take with me is Morrissey’s. He instantly became #1 for me, and has been so ever since.
R.E.M. – ‘OUT OF TIME’
I was already an R.E.M. fan for years when this came out, but this album truly brought me comfort during a nine-month period in a rehabilitation center after a spinal cord injury at the age of 19. It kept me upbeat not only then, but from that point onward. My doctor told me I’d never walk again, but I was determined to prove him wrong, and I did. I learned to never give up during this time, and I also came out to the rest of my friends and family by then. I knew that “Losing My Religion” wasn’t about religion, but rather being at the end of one’s rope – which I felt I was. “Half a World Away” reminded me of the miracle of life, while making me long to go back to my birthplace of New York. I made it my mission to return there, and eventually I did just a few years later. And “Shiny Happy People” – laugh all you want – really made an impact on me, allowing me to never lose hope.
While all these are great, of the above list, only ‘STRANGEWAYS’ makes my top five favorite albums of all time.

Oh man, there are so many good ones posted here....for me I am very Neil Young centric and his music was central to us as teenagers growing up so my top 5 will have mostly Neil in it.
Neil Young - Tonight's The Night
Neil Young - On The Beach
Neil Young - Living With War
Beatles - Seargent Pepper
Pixies - Doolittle
Don't get me wrong. I like and own and play on guitar a wide variety of music. It's just that Neil is the one who inspired me and my friends to pick up a guitar and start playing.

i like that album, but i love the bends.
I gotta agree with you, it was a hard choice for me to decide between OK and The Bends.
The Bends is definitely my favorite Radiohead album, but I had to choose which one changed my life more (as per the topic of the thread). Most definitely OK changed my life and turned me on to a whole new world of progressive music and actually completely influenced the type of music I perform and write nowadays. The Bends may be a better album (I mean common, Just is one of those classics..), but OK is definitely more influential for most Radiohead listeners that have been "turned on" to them by friends. It's much more accessible.

With The Beatles, eh? I always find it interesting when people like their really early stuff - I personally love their older stuff, when they got more experimental. For some reason I just don't quite like when the Beatles sing "Roll Over Beethoven.." I'd much rather hear "I Am The Walrus."
Seems to be their own material, not them trying to do songs like their influences (Elvis, etc).

Albums that changed my life? ALBUMS THAT CHANGED MY LIFE? I don't buy music that doesn't. :)
1. Tool - "Lateralus" - there are no words.
2. Delerium - "Karma" - turned out to dramatically shape the direction of my own music for years to come
3. Steve Reich - "Music for Eighteen Musicians" - the Seventh movement is the most profoundly moving piece of music ever written (imo)
4. Shpongle - "Nothing Lasts... But Nothing is Lost" - what a head trip... there's still nothing else remotely like it. It's like dropping acid without the acid.
5. Massive Attack - "Mezzanine" - the soundtrack of my most turbulent years ('gravity zeroes, see me stall / I bounce off walls, lose my footing and fall; / I can be sweet, so / incomplete though.')

Beethoven's 6th Symphony — what started my love affair with classical music as a small child (to the exclusion of basically everything else)
Savage Garden's self titled — got me listening to modern music.
Orgy - Candyass — got me listening to hard rock.
The Arcade Fire - Funeral — solidified my interest in indie rock.
Sigur Rós - ( ) — the album that got me into post-rock.

How exactly does an album change your life?
If you have to ask, then you probably wouldn't get it anyway....
Agree ... but I will try to explain. For me 'changed my life' means it got me into more and different music, hence more and different people. Here are my 5.
Green Day - Dookie
First CD I owned. Tre' made me want to play the drums and I met a lot of my friends in high school because we all wanted to start bands. I got one of my early friends into rock with this record and a friend who became a guitarist I played with learned to play by learning all the songs from this record.
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Growing up on punk rock and rock and Load-era Metallica, hearing this record turned me onto more 'progressive' forms of music. It also changed the way the band I was in at the time played because nearly all of us got into metal at the same time. I was Slayer (mainly because of Dave Lombardo), and our two guitarists each got into Megadeth and 'Old' Metallica respectively.
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
If it wasn't for this album I'd still be listening to only punk rock and metal.
Aaliyah - Aaliyah
Took me out of my jazz phase as I started to branch out into other forms of music. Hip hop, R&B (obviously), Funk, Soul, Blues, Country, etc. Special mention to "If Your Girl Only Knew" which made me by the Aaliyah record even if that song wasn't on this album (which I didn't know at the time).
Infected Mushroom - Classical Mushroom
Opened my eyes to electronic music. And made me realize I had to start limiting myself to what I really liked as I only had a 40GB iPod at the time. Slashed and burned a lot of records I really wasn't listening to and helped me realize what kidn of music I really liked.

Sorry, the best I could do was narrow it down to 7. There are too many artists with too many albums to pick just 5 that have affected me in some way. These are in no particular order. I strongly suggest checking out all of them.
Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself -> A stunning follow up to her 1st solo album.
Keane - Under The Iron Sea -> Full of mixed emotions and written when the band was on the verge of a break-up, this album is just wow.
José González - Veneer -> Just Beautiful Music
Frou Frou - Details -> I don't know what to say about this one. I put it on very often and never get tired of it. The melodies coupled with Heap's vocals are just the perfect cocktail.
Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister -> Their best ever album.
Rachael Yamagata - Happenstance -> Again, this album is just fantastic. Rachael has such an amazing voice. The album touches home on so many levels.
Sigur Rós - Takk... ->Their best 'uplifting' album, but it kills me to leave out some of their most older, most beautiful work from '( )' and 'Agaetis Byrjun'.
Sorry for going over five. I have slapped myself on the wrist.

I'm going to be a webbel and add two extra albums to my already five long list (see a few pages back):
Radiohead: OK Computer
Absolutely love this album. Dark, scary and kinda uplifting at the same time, with No Surprises stuck in the middle of all this dark music. Fantastically written, recorded and performed. One of the most important rock albums ever IMO.
Radiohead: The Bends
Again, I love this album. Everything about it is special, the way each and every song is an absolute classic, and the way it also gels as an album (although not quite on par with OK). It also seems incredibly influential, look how many bands have tried to copy that sound, and none have really done it quite as well as Radiohead.

Wait a minute ... you've listened to one of the greatest metal records of all time and early In Flames (i hope) and you call Iowa "Most hardcore album EVER" ?
Uh, yeah. Do you mean "Reign in Blood" or "Come Clarity"? In Flames isn't all that insane. And some people who are insane aren't hooky and catchy. I also don't see the solo as a hardcore element to metal.
Slayer is definitely the bringers of hardcore metal. No one has done it better for longer. But the solo isn't the cause of their greatness. Their hooks and catches are. Almost everyone who like metal likes Slayer for this reason. It's not a coordination of scales or a cleanness in their fast picking, it's the distinctive and original riffs like the intro to the song reign in blood that makes Slayer stand out. You know what I mean?
But Iowa is the hardcore album of all time thus far because it has one thing Slayer doesn't- Corey Taylor. His vocals are the definitive sound of american frustration and he has enough voice to move the listener through initial angst and into calculated aggression. It also contains a unique and original sound that has no foundation of 80's metal. But it pops and drops and pushes and whispers. It's nuts. :D
I don't know what else to say. I'm a musician- a bassist firstly and guitarist secondly. I think "Iowa" is a uniquely approached madness. No other metal album sounds like it.

1)Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond
2)Rage - Welcome To The Other Side
3)Darkseed - Spellcraft
4)Grave Digger - Knights Of The Cross
5)In Flames - Colony/Moonspell - Wolfheart
These are the main highlights that made me listen to heavy music. I have got lots of legendary albums, but these were the first to come!
