View Full Version : Apple Logo on PlayStation 3's Website?
Hollis
Jul 7, 2006, 11:18 AM
Sony just recently updated their official PlayStation 3 website (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/default.html) and when you go there it shows a picture of the PlayStation 3 along with a breif summary. But thats not all it really shows, if you refresh the page and look at the middle of the PlayStation 3, somthing appears and disappears for just a split second: An Apple Logo (http://www.team-md.com/upload/store/ps3.jpg.)
Anyone want to speculate about what this could possibly mean? And yes this is real, there really is an Apply logo on the PlayStation 3's website, go and visit for your self.

Maybe it's a joke.. but Sony could get sued over just flashing an Apple logo on a system they have nothing to do with right?

Well apple has bluray support, as shown on sony's bluray page. And since the ps3 has bluray, mabey there will be some interactivity. Althoguh, I do not see the sign on the page

Maybe, I'm hoping for some OSX to PlayStation 3 connectivity like the 360 does with Windows Vista. Then I'd definatley pick up a Macbook/iMac with my PlayStation 3 this November.

That is really really odd I doubt any flash artist is stupid enough to do that as an easter egg and it lasted so long too. Interesting...

Woah, that is really strange. A few things it could mean: Maybe Apple will start supporting blu-ray drives in the new power mac/ Macbook Pro (wild speculation and wishful thinking, but it would be awesome for media storage!), Apple has something to do with the PS3 i.e. connectivity etc, or maybe its just a mac fan being funny. I hope its the first AND the second personally.

It's obviously put there intentionally, but put there intentionally and supposed to be there arent necessarily the same thing. But let's hope this means something big! It would be HUGE if Sony marketed PS3 as a PC replacement and it came preloaded with OSX.

Apparantly that is the background video obtained when someone decompiled the Flash file:

Looks like some stock Apple video with a PS3 slapped in front of the Apple watermark. I question the legality of this use ^_^ Coming from Sony, queen of the intellectual property zealots, it's hilarious.

if the PS3 HD came preloaded with OS X (which it isn't its coming with linux)
that would be a VERY fast way to gain market share in the population. in fact, that opens the flood gates..
the PS3 will sell millions upon millions of units (I know the understatement of the year) that would increase apple marketshae in the OS department since PS3 is a computer
that'd be a HUGE blow to microsoft
they are sitting around thinking "hey we are going to own the video game market, thank god apples not in it...whats this? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
I hope this is true, but I don't see apple letting the Harddrives of the PS3 to be loaded with OS X
if sony isn't sued within the next 2 months this could be something huge for apple

We called Sony's PR and, after a few tries, they finally saw it, too. They were as surprised as we are. After finally seeing it, their response: "that's f---king funny." The PR firm is looking into it. We'll keep you posted as the story develops.

Can you imagine if Sony packaged, say, a $1000-$1300 version of the PS3? Say with the following specs:
Cell Processor
2 gigs of ram
250gig hard drive
Blue Ray of course,
HDMI and DVI out
Built-in wireless
Oodles of USB ports, maybe firewire on the side
OSX Tiger Preloaded
Toss in a mouse and keyboard, an ACD and imagine the possibilities. Who wouldn't throw down the cash for that? A PC replacement with Mac Pro gaming power at iMac pricing.... It would murder all Apple hardware sales, which is why this will never happen, but I can't help but think of how amazing this would be. I'd never leave my desk again.

I have a hard time believing that this is meaningless. Of course it's a "mistake" because it was not supposed to be visible at that time but it has to have some kind of meaning. Perhaps it's something as simple as having iTunes (or even Front Row) pre-loaded on the PS3.

Historical note; the PS3 can run Mac OS X:
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=25229
I wonder - we know Mach is probably gone in Leopard, Apple loyalists are defecting to Linux, Sony has stated more recently that PS3 will come running Linux, Apple and Sony are in bed, Apple needs more hardware driver support, Apple is hemming and hawing about kernel source for Intel, they say wait a little bit longer ...

I sure hope not. I just couldn't stand the sound of "Apple Mac OS X Enterprise Linux Client Edition." If Leopard ws based on linux, all apps would have to be ported to X11. Either that, or cocoa would have to implimented, would make it not be linux any more. Basically, OS X will always be BSD based.

This is what I think will happen:
Sony will get a stripped down version of Leopard to run on PS3 and in return, Apple will get exclusive compatability with all PS2 and upcoming PS3 titles.
win win win.
imagine the ps3 being the missing link in the mac os media center. It will be able to record, download and playback tv and web content on your bigscreen as well as play ps3 games, blueray movies and streaming content from your mac or ipod.

Or not, it's already been addressed by Sony saying "it was a mistake", and we worked out that it was an Apple package used, not just a logo.
Apple machines won't be able to run PS3 games anyway, unless Apple machines go backwards to PowerPC with the PS3's Cell CPU. The PS3 cannot record/playback TV either. There is no TV input or any form of video input.

IF that picture is for real, we know one thing-Stevie has decided to leverage APPLE showing above the radar for a change, instead of under it, by playing with the big boys.
And Ive never seen and XBOX, PSP or the like -but it looks like a PPC Tower.
The only worm here is that both SONY and INTEL are not in the best of financial shape.
---
Here is something else I just noticed: if you go to the second URL that the OP has posted, you can see, if you look VERY carefully that the APPLE logo is still there, after the brief flash, as if it is SUPPOSED to be there, apparently-it is almost the same grayscale as the rest of the backround, but at a slightly lighter shade, you can just barely make out the logo.
You would think if it was a mistake, it would easily have been blacked out completely.
So appears to be a place holder that isnt quite visible-yet.

And to the naysayers-Steve pulled the Intel move out of his hat by complete surprise, with only scoffed at rumours a week or two before it was announced...

If apple and sony partnered Xbox could be in for a major hurting, I think the PS3 is either going to make or break gaming. I love the 360 but i have seen the screen shots and believe the ps3 is going to be amazing! Just not a fan of blue ray dvds

If the price is lowered, and the footage from the Eight Days trailer is, as advertised, not rendered, it will splash the XBox
