I renamed my home folder (in finder I Command+Click'ed it and hit 'Rename') Then my iChat froze and when I started it back up, it was like it was the first time I had opened it. No Chax or anything. I then tried to use the Command+Shift+4 and it didn't work. After that I restarted and my desktop was blank, my menu bar was back to default and Safari and Dashboard were on the dock.
When I checked my HD under the Users folder i realized that there were two, one was the renamed one and the other was the old named one. The old named one was blank like a new user and the new renamed one had all my files in it (which was a relief.) I deleted my old named one (the one with nothing in it.)
I then restarted the computer again. This time, the whole dock was reset. It had all the apps in their default position (but it still had all the custom icons I assigned.) Any suggestion to get it back to normal.

Create a new user account, log into it, change your old short name back to what it used to be and you should be okay. 🙂

Remember, after you follow mad jew's advice, make sure that account name changes as well as many other account features are always handled in the "Accounts" feature in System Prefrences.
