I can't believe it. Only 60 years of age? This is a very sad day for Pink Floyd and music in general. Syd has been such a huge inspiration to people.

:(

Shine on you crazy Diamond.

Apparently Syd died a few days ago, due to complications from diabetes.

Syd, you helped form one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. Your presence will indeed be missed. Thank you.

She was long gone, long, long gone
she was gone, gone, the bigger they come
the larger her hand 'till no one understands
why for so long she'd been gone.

And I stood very still by the window sill
and I wondered for those I love still
I cried in my mind where I stand behind
the beauty of love's in her eyes...

She was long gone, long, long gone
she was gone, gone, the bigger they come
the larger her hand 'till no one understands
why for so long she'd been gone.

And I borrowed the page
from a leopard's cage
and I prowled in the evening sun's glaze
her head lifted high to the light in the sky
the opening dawn on her face...

She was long gone long, long gone
she was gone, gone, the bigger they come
the larger her hand 'till no one understands
why for so long she'd been gone.

And I stood very still by the window sill
and I wondered for those I love still
I cried in my mind where I stand behind
the beauty of love's in her eyes...
Long Gone, Syd Barrett

I'll probably get slaughtered for it... but personally i think his contribution was massively overrated. For me the real Pink Floyd started with DSOTM.

He was in the band when they produced The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. That's good enough for me. He will be missed... :(

He suffered from major mental illness his whole life, and his sister had to care for his affairs. Hopefully he is at peace now.

Agreed. Piper is a wonderful album. I cant decide which to put on when i get home, Piper, or Barrett. you can hear the breakdown of a creative wizard disintegrate in Saucerful of Secrets, whilst Waters and Gilmour try and 'do' 60's psychodelia without him, it doesn't quite pull off though it just sounds cold and dark in places, the bits that syd managed to do sounds very depressed. Its quite a bleak album

As a HUGE Floyd fan, I know his legacy is intact, and his potential was never fullfilled.
I love the early Floyd music, but love the rest of it too, both very different.

RIP Syd.

That is so scary... we were just talking about him yesterday, I was with some family yesterday and we got into the subject on drug induced mental issues and of course Syd's name came up, again and again... just one of those everyday freaking coincidences, but still send a chill down my spine when I read he was dead this morning...

Shine on...

Overrated? Without Syd, there would have never been a Pink Floyd. He influenced Bowie, Lennon, McCartney, and countless others. You can't forget the laser and light shows as well.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, however, I would argue that the Pink Floyd we got Post Syd, wouldn't have been the same without the Syd influence, and eventual loss.

Shine on you Crazy Diamond, is essentially an Ode to Syd, and just that feeling of loss the band members had really came through on so many of their songs/albums...Loss being his loss of sanity..
Also, would the Wall have been the Wall without Syd? Roger wrote the Wall about Madness, Paranoia and being an overwhelmed rock star....all of which Syd was...

The craziest story is the one about how Pink Floyd were in the studio recording Shine on You Crazy Diamond, when Syd just walked into the Studio...he apparantly shaved his head, and eyebrows, was overweight, and just looked so different....but the fact that he walked in after I guess years of being absent, while they were recording a song about him....kind of spooky..

R.I.P Syd...

you'll be missed..

I wouldn't go that far, but you're right that Pink Floyd sounds way different once Gilmour enters and Barrett leaves.

But if you really prefer the Gilmour era, then you have to recognize Meddle as when Pink Floyd "started." It's a fabulous album.

Syd Barrett, the troubled Pink Floyd co-founder who spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

A spokeswoman for the band said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for years.

One of my favorite Syd stories was detailed in the book A Saucerful of Secrets.

Syd was showing a new song to his bandmates, but changing the chord progression slightly each time he repeated a section. Inevitably, Roger Waters lost his temper when he couldn't follow the changes.

Syd called the song "have you got it yet?"

Sad to hear. While I've always been more a fan of Meddle, Obscured, and AHM than of either Piper or Saucer, any true Pink Floyd fan has to acknowledge the influence Syd had on Floyd and music in general. Sad that he was unable to continue making music, and sad again that he's gone from the world.
Thank goodness we have all this great music to remember him by.:(

In shock after finding out about Syds death, as well as the fact it's taken me this long to find out. Although I am predominantly a fan of Pink Floyds music from Meddle onwards, I can't deny the influence Syd had on the band, and how his status in the band affected their concepts and music.
