Nike + iPod

Hey Guys,

Need your expertise again. My girlfriend really loves the new Nike + iPod thing. She loves the fact that it gives he all the realtime stats while she can listen to her music. Time has come for her to upgrade her ipod. However she is against getting a nano. She doesnt like the design and has way more music that 4gb. So my question to all of you is will/is Nike + iPod be supported on the ipod video models or is it purely going to stay configured with the nano?

It's been said on here before that they'll keep it restricted to the Nano because that's the best iPod for exercise (running). Full size iPods are hard drive based and they don't actually like going running that much.

With rumors of 8 and 10GB Nanos in the next few months, you might be advised to hold on a little for the new models.

Alternatively, you could buy a full size iPod and a 1GB Nano and use the Nano specifically for running. Then you'd be doing pretty much what the marketers dream of...

I agree with the first post. The flash-based iPods are much better for running. You can easily manage two iPods on the same computer. You can't possibly need 30+ Gbs of music while you run. My wife runs ultras and even she wouldn't hear the same song twice!

Any speculation about what Apple *might* do is just that...speculation. As of yet I haven't heard of any hacks to get it to work on iPod videos, but I not sure if all the parts are even shipping yet either. Has anyone taken delivery and actually used one of these yet?

It would be possible but in 5 years I am yet to see any sort of hacked versions of iPod firmware (beyond the changing of displayed images) anywhere.

Apple restricted the Nike+iPod thing to the nano to avoid any sort of liability for repairs from people who went running with their HDD-based iPods. If Apple allowed the regular iPod to use the Nike stuff, they would be showing that running with an iPod would be a suitable activity and would thus be forced to repair any HDD shown to have broken whilst the user was running.

The nano (and any future flash-based iPods with screens) will be the only ones to work with the Nike add-ons.

Well the Nike gadget isn't actually out yet so nobody's running with it ;).

Have a look on Amazon for a cheaper (than Apple) iPod video, save the extra ($25) and put it towards a 1GB Nano. By the time the Nike thing is actually released, your g/f may have saved the requisite $149.

The bigger issue is can she wear the Nike running shoes.

Not everyone can wear the same running shoes. Most runners that I know (including me) cannot wear Nike due to fit problems. Don't get the shoes for the iPod function and then have knee pain every day due to lack of support. Hopefully the line of shoes that they release will be good for a wide range of foot types.

Gadgets don't make you run faster. Large men chasing you with clubs do.

just what I was going to say. I can't wear nike shoes.

Oh, and the sensor has a non-replaceable battery... I don't know what kind of life we're talking about for this gadget, but it's not going to be good. My old nike watch+sensor based on the same technology lasts about 10 runs on 2 AAA batteries. I'd hope this would last a good deal longer than that, but apparently once the battery dies you're SOL... which I find absolutely unbelievable.
